Mulberry Cottage overlooks the green within Staple. This was originally one of the farms servicing the needs of nearby Dartington Hall and Estate. The cottage was part of the main farmhouse, with the woodsman and farm hands living in the surrounding buildings. Now Staple is a beautiful hamlet in it’s own right within the village of Dartington and only a few minutes drive to the eclectic town of Totnes.
Mulberry Cottage was redesigned by Lady Elmhurst in the 1960’s and has been beautifully renovated. With large windows, well proportioned rooms, quality appliances and quirky reclaimed features, this property will charm and delight. (Look out for the porthole mirror and overhead ocean liner parcel shelves.)
The front door opens onto a recently renovated french oak parquet floor hallway. From here you’ll find the kitchen, fitted with a new Smeg oven, old pine kitchen dresser and one of the most amazing work surfaces we’ve ever seen. Next to the kitchen is a very handy utility space, perfect for removing wellies after a stroll on Dartmoor or along the close by River Dart, or washing the little ones’ hands in the Belfast sink.
Also downstairs, the dining room has one of the chunkiest wooden dining tables in Devon. With enough seating for everyone, this is the perfect spot to enjoy a home cooked Sunday lunch. And while the adults make plans for the week ahead over a glass of crisp white wine, there’s room in here for the children to play. Opposite the dining room is the lounge… oh the lounge! Kick back and fall into the cosiest of sofas while you read, watch TV, snooze or ponder the answer to 8 across. With a wood burning stove, great ambiance and a delightful view, this really is a great space to relax in.
Upstairs are four good sized bedrooms, a family shower room and a ‘Jack and Jill’ bathroom with bath and shower. The master bedroom has a fantastic king sized bed and overlooks the thatched cottages and magnificent oak trees on the hamlet green. This bedroom has the ‘Jack and Jill’ ensuite. There is another double room overlooking the green with a cosy king sized bed, and to the rear of the house overlooking the garden, you’ll find a further double and twin bedrooms. The twin room can be made up as a small double, two 3 foot single beds, or a single bed and toddler bed or travel cot – just make sure you let us know what you’d prefer before you arrive.
The property also has a good sized and well enclosed garden with outdoor dining and BBQ. The cottage is a mere stroll from the beautiful Cott Inn in Dartington, which has been serving visitors since 1320. It has regular live music and fabulous food and drink. Also within walking distance is an excellent range of artisan shops at the Dartington Cider Press, and the historic Dartington Estate with Great Hall and beautifully tended grounds. Head slightly farther afield to explore Totnes or the many beautiful beaches of the South Hams and South Devon, or head North to fall in love with the wilderness of Dartmoor, just a short drive away.
Whether you’re looking for a location to spend a break with the family or somewhere to relax as a group of friends, Mulberry Cottage makes an ideal choice.
