About Stuart and Shona Patterson
We, the owners, are Stuart and Shona Patterson, as well as our cat, Oscar and our golden retriever, Marley. Originally from Scotland, we had been living in Switzerland for five years before deciding on a complete life-change and a permanent move to France. We already owned a studio in Thollon-les-Memises (a ski resort in Haute Savoie) which we used throughout the year and loved the French way of life.
Stuart and Shona Patterson purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Stuart and Shona Patterson chose Le Dorat
As we already owned a home in the mountains, we wanted to buy something completely different and the Limousin suited us perfectly, with its uninterrupted expanses of sky. We are only five minutes’ walk from the town, which we felt was ideal, especially for those visitors who want to walk or cycle to get their fresh baguettes in the morning, or who don’t want to take their cars when going for a meal or drink at night.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our house and gites have been converted from a coach house and its adjoining stables, so are full of character. For anyone not wanting to spend their days sightseeing, the 10m x 5m pool and gardens provide a welcome change. The more energetic can spend time at one of the local lakes, where fishing and various water sports can be enjoyed. For golf lovers, there are three courses within one hour’s drive. We also have bikes which can be used by visitors to explore the countryside on our doorstep.

Coast/Beach: The coast at La Rochelle is approx 2.30 hours drive away, however, Lac de Saint-Pardoux is a 40 minutes drive and has safe sandy beaches with activity play areas for children, water sports, fishing and many beautiful walks. Travel: Le Dorat is situated between Limoges and Poiters. Both airports are approx 50 mins and 75 mins respectively. Calais is approx. 6 hours driving time. The town has a full range of shops including bars, restaurants, banks, antique shops and supermarkets. Car hire is available at Limoges & Poitiers airports and is recommended for those that like to get off the beaten track. There is a train station in Le Dorat that serves Poitiers and Limoges and is only 15 minutes walk from the gites. Distances: We are situated on the edge of the medieval town of Le Dorat, a 10 minute walk to the magnificent 11th - 12th century Collegiate of Saint-Pierre, one of the Limousin's finest gems of pure Romanesque art. The 15th century fortified gates and ramparts of Le Dorat offer panoramic views over the beautiful countryside. Pavement cafes grace the squares within the town. Further Details: There are very good restaurants in the town as well as numerous cafe/bars where you can enjoy lunch or supper and watch the world go by. Antique shops, book shops, gift shops, factory outlets for Limoges pottery and fine lingerie are on the outskirts of the town. Also within a few minutes walk is a supermarket and laundrette. Three annual horse racing events (June, July & August) and National Horse show in September are held nearby. Further afield Futuroscope Park, Animal Parks, Bird shows and fun parks are well worth a visit.
