a magical retreat in Sicily

  • 4 of 5

Our stay at the Villa alla Torre d'aqua was wonderful. We could not have found a more convenient location to visit all the wonderous sites that Sicily has to offer. The villa was spacious; there were six adults in our party. The grounds and gardens were magical with lemon, lime, almond, peach trees, many varieties of palm trees and lovely plantings. It was indeed a retreat to come back to after our wanderings. Francesca and staff were so kind and helpful as were all of the people we met in Sicily. The fabulous restaurant just down the street - Torrealta - was a renovated mill - truly beautiful, excellent menu and the owners amazingly kind. Thank you to all for allowing us to see the best of Sicily.

Big, clean and comfortable. Large garden.

  • 4 of 5

Lovely Villa, beautiful large garden. We were visited twice by the owners to ensure all was well. 15 mins walk to the beach which has a moderate selection of bars and restaurants. In general night life is quite. Nice restaurant opposite the villa, pizzas to die for. Only thing the villa is missing is a pool, we would happily have paid extra for this facility.

Beautiful Sicilian home

  • 5 of 5

The owner Francesca was at the house to greet us , she was so welcoming. The house and the garden is amazing, we definitely felt like we were in Sicily. The house is very spacious and tastefully furnished and the garden is amazing. Lemon, lime, olive trees, even a banana plant. Several sitting and eating areas all behind secure gates, a little piece of paradise. A great place for a relaxing holiday. A car is needed to explore the area. Thank you Francesca for letting us enjoy your glorious home, wish we were still there.

A Truly Lovely Villa and Garden

  • 5 of 5

The Villa was truly wonderful. Francesca received us very late. She produced a lovely bottle of red wine and some almond cakes, really needed after a long day of travelling. We had trouble finding the road in the dark. The landmark to head for is Restaurant TorreAlte. It is within 30 metres of the villa gate. I have provided more detailed driving instructions and passed them on to the owner. As said, the ones provided were fine but these are more detailed. Since all flights from Stansted arrive late it will be dark when you arrive.

The rooms were large and airy and beautifully furnished. The garden was magic and was a haven of peace and relaxation. You can eat outdoors most of the time. There are banana trees, lemons and limes and the citrus blossom scent was wonderful. We tasted Franscesca's olive oil and had a few lemons which were just falling from the trees as they ripen. There was fine sage, mint and we planted a basil plantling.

We had a very nice stay and there was nothing not to like about the whole villa. Arriving in mid April, the weather was warm and there were few crowds and lots of things to see though we spent more than one pleasant day relaxing in the garden, eating the fine Italian food and drinking the local wine. There is a fine barbeque station with running water. We made good use of it. The local restaurant (TorreAlte) was also very good and just a short walk.

Isola delle Femmine
Car: necessary

Villa alla Torre d'Acqua is located in the beautiful gulf of Carini, between Capo Gallo and Punta Raisi. The long coast extends for miles encompassing white sandy beaches, rocks, colorful pebbles, natural reserves, bays with crystalline sea, touristic seaports and a rich vegetation typical of the Mediterranean scrub.

Capaci is a nice beach village, well organized during the bathing season. You can do a lot of summer activities here! If you like diving, you can admire the colorful seabed of Isola delle Femmine and its homonymous islet opposite to it. They are natural reserves thanks to their special flora and fauna; the islet is also a shelter for royal seagulls, herons, egrets and a lot more. Moreover, you can do windsurfing, sailing, surfing, riding water scooter, playing beach volley, and so on. You can also enjoy at night since the village has various attractions: pubs, parties on the beach, entertainments in the squares or in the seafronts.

Villa alla Torre d'Acqua is just 10 minutes far from the lively seafront on foot. From here, you can reach beach places such as Mondello, Barcarello, Terrasini, in a very little time! Moreover, the villa is just 15 km away from both the airport and Palermo centre.

Palermo is a city of art, rich in history, architecture, culture and tradition. The older part of the city is full of sights: Piazza Politeama and the homonymous theatre; Massimo theatre, the biggest one in Italy and the third one in Europe; the Cathedral, the royal Palace and its Palatine Chapel; the 4 Canti; the famous street markets of Ballarò, Capo and Vucciria; the Puppet Museum, extremely important for our tradition; the Botanic garden which safeguards lots of important plant species.

Furthermore, Palermo is full of hidden attractions! You can find them in little squares, in the alleys and even in the underground!! Churches whose artistic value is inestimable, ancient palaces with wonderful architectural details, sanctuaries, statues, gardens, mysterious places such as Qanat or Beati Paoli’s itineraries. You will finally fall in love with it!

Natural reserves of Capo Gallo and Monte Pellegrino

The Natural Reserve of Capo Gallo is reachable through a coast path, on west part of the village. Monte Gallo is a promontory overlooking the sea, surmounted by a white tower called “Semaforo”.It is rich in caves, whose most famous is “Grotta dell’Olio”, a suggestive sea cavern with clear bright water and light sandy seabed brightened by rays of sunshine passing from some top fissures. This natural reserve has a varied flora and fauna: here you can see plants such as Brooms of Gasparrini, wild Orchids,Sicilian Sparviere and a lot of animals such as foxes, wild rabbits, peregrine falcons, real seabirds.

The Natural Reserve of Monte Pellegrino comprises the whole homonymous mountain and the royal estate of Favorita. Goethe described it as “The most beautiful promontory in the world”, maybe thanks to its magic contrasts, different nature colors, steep sides and practicable plains. Here there is the most important pilgrimage place of Palermo, Santa Rosalia’s sanctuary, with its particular rocky church.

Isola delle Femmine is a little village next to Capaci; they were only one village in the past. Its most important activity is fishing. If you want to see a particular and funny custom which has been lasting for ages, you must go to the port at dawn and participate or just watch the convivial fish auction. Fishermen arrive from their hard night work and unload the fresh squirmy fish, which will be offered with high-sounding voices to the buyers, iterating a centuries-old rite. Besides attending this old tradition you can buy fresh cheaper fish!

Another important tradition that has lasted for ages is the fish festival. Some fishermen and dozens of volunteers organize some stands in the port and offer to the participants different kinds of fish cooked according to the Sicilian traditional recipes. This is the most tempting way to know the local fish production, its flavors and its fragrance will captivate you. Absolutely not to be missed! It usually takes place in the end of August.
