Beautiful property but could use some attention
My friends (4) and I stayed here three (3) nights. We had booked four (4) nights, but due to our flight cancellation out of Cork, had to drive to Dublin the last evening and stay there.
The property is managed by a third party in the UK, so the booking process went through them after Homeaway's initial contact. Aghabullogue is more secluded than we realized, but the location was near ideal for our flight out of Cork airport (subsequently cancelled). There was not much to speak of in the hamlet, and the closest bigger town was Macroom, about 18 KM away over smaller roads. A vehicle is a must if you plan on doing anything outside of the hamlet.
This property is quaint and spectacular to look at from a distance, as well as to drive upon through the iron gate...a very luxurious initial impression. However, the driveway lighting for this otherwise beautiful property was not working. Several of the post lamps did not have light bulbs at all, and those that did, did not turn on, at least not by any of the light switches we could find. The soffit and fascia of the house had mold/mildew showing, something a good pressure washing could fix, and the roof looked as though it was not aging gracefully.
Inside, the home was roomy, well-equipped, with tastefully furnished (although some it was worn). The bedrooms were more than adequate for my group, and quite comfortable. The home's amenities were solid and plentiful, for the most part.
Heating was adequate in all rooms, although one of the heaters in one of the bedrooms was not working. When asked about this, the owner's son, said he was not sure about fixing it. The washer and dryer came in handy. The WiFi on the property was lacking to non-existent, to the point that we had to turn our own devices into hotspots in order to connect the group to the internet. When questioned about possibly fixing it, the owner's son said he did not know anything about it. One of the sconce lights in the entrance hall would not turn off, after being turn on upon arrival. It flickered as though there may have been a problem in the wiring, which caused us concern. Additionally, the trash/recycle was confusing, as there was only one large bin outside. Per the owner's son, we left the recycles in the kitchen.
All in all, a majestic home, from a distance. But you may be disappointed if you had to spend any length of time actually IN the home, such as a rainy day or not having a vehicle. I would say a 3.5 out of 5 rating.
