This five-story modernist townhouse with beautiful old tiles, antique carpentry and iron railings is the perfect getaway for lovers of natural, unspoiled habitats, artists ready to be inspired by fabulous landscapes, and for anyone looking for a good family vacation with children. Right on the square of one of the most picturesque mountain villages in Mallorca, it is only 10 minutes away from the coast, and it is ideal for lovers of biking, golfing, trailing, hiking and sightseeing. Perfect for couples looking for a romantic setting coupled with many things to do around: cafés and restaurants are nearby, and Soller's fresh market and bubbly plaza are within walking distance (25 min) of Fornalutx by beautiful, ancient stone paths.

The house has five floors, two of them with a balcony, and a roof terrace with astonishing views: modern, completely furnished kitchen with all appliances, dining, living room, double bedroom + bathroom, double bedroom + terrace. Heating/Air conditioning.

Food: The grocery store is right across the square. There is also a fresh fruit and vegetable market in the plaza on Thursdays, and a great bakery just a few meters feom the house. At the supermarket they sell everything, including fresh bread and pastries, fruit, vegetables, meat, wine, dairy, toiletries, specialty deli products, etc. Fresh meat, but no fresh fish, only frozen. In Soller (10 min away) you can find a daily traditional fresh market with fish and seafood right out of the Port's boats, local meat, and locally grown vegetables, nuts and fruits (Open 7AM-2-PM). There are five restaurants in the village, and many more in the nearest town of Soller and in the Port of Soller, where you will find fresh fish and seafood specialties, hearty soups and paellas, grilled pork and lamb, and also Italian, Indian and Chinese food. The valley of Soller is famous for its orange and lemon specialties, in addition to the traditional fish, lamb, pork, and seafood dishes. The town of Soller prides itself in its pastry shops. Restaurant prices are quite reasonable.

Keys / cleaning: Contact agent in town will give you the keys, show you how to run appliances, open and close doors, inform you about garbage and recycling procedures, etc. Clean bedding and towels provided. Contact staff available constantly. Weekly cleaning and change of sheets upon request.

Transportation: Rental cars available at the airport. Bikers: you can take the bus to Palma and another bus or train to Soller, and then ride three Km. uphil to get to the village. Buses from Soller to Palma and vice-versa available every hour. Buses from tFornalutx to Soller and Port the Soller available about 3-4 times a day. There is a cable car every half an hour from Soller to the Port of Soller. Fornalutx to Soller walk: 20-25 minutes, drive in 7 minutes. Fornalutx - Port walk: 45-minutes, drive in 10 minutes. Boat excursions available from the Port of Soller to local cobblestone beaches like Cala Tuent, Torrent de Pareis, and La Calobra. Buses to Deia and Valldemossa also available from Soller.

Why Carmen Truyols chose Deia - Soller Region

The location right on the village square has many advantages, considering how hard it is for many other people in the village to carry groceries and luggage up the stone streets, which are mostly stairs. Getting out of the house to sit at one of the cafés is a real pleasure, and walking right out and walking a few meters to get the daily papers, or groceries or bread or anything you forgot, is very convenient. Even though the staircase inside of the house is inconvenient for babies, couples with small children actually can sit at the café/bar and leave the kids sleeping inside,: the radio baby monitors and internet WIFI work from the cafés. Also, from this house you can experience local life, day and night. In the summer, bars close at about 1:30 AM, but of you are on vacation you will not mind . If you do mind, you can close all windows and turn the AC will not hear anything, since the stone walls are 1m thick.

We drove to many other places in Mallorca, including Deia, Valdemossa, Alcudia and Palma, but found none of them able to compete with the beauty of Fornalutx. We explored many places by car and foot, but liked best of all the days of complete relaxation we had in the village. Considerable number of stairs in the house and around this terraced town might be a problem for toddlers and for the elderly. Children 3 or younger will need supervision in the roof terrace and on the staircase.

In the Heart of Village Life

Carmen's property in Fornalutx is ideally situated for those who want to have the experience of living in a community as well as enjoying a beautifully maintained and comfortable home. Walk out the front door and you are in the center of village life. Morning coffee, a delicious pastry from the local bakery, a seat at the village bar with lively conversation with friendly and welcoming local residents, a well provisioned market, and restaurants become a part of your daily life. Day trips around Mallorca are easy to accomplish and their is a pleasant hike through ancient olive groves to the nearby city of Soller. Carmen has created a home for those who want to genuinely experience daily life in a village in Fornalutx but venture beyond. We are already planning our next next stay at this delightful village home.

Great place to be for hikers and bikers

We've enjoyed the stay a lot. It is a really charming house in the center of a lovely village in the Tramuntana Mountains, just "a step" from Palma away.

It provides everything you need for a holiday: enough space for up to 4 people (should be family members or very close friends since there are two bedrooms on two different floors just divided by the steps; one bathroom in one of the bedrooms), beautifully renovated, very clean and with a comfortable kitchen. The self-service supermarket is just over the "plaza" and you are in the heart of the village - either with contact to the people living there or not. We will come back as soon as it is possible for us. Thank you again, Carmen, for staying at your house!

Comfortable accomodation in Tramuntana Mountains

Reading the description of "Schön renoviertes Haus mitten in der Altstadt von Fornalutx" we -- 4 persons aged 23-32 -- were a bit sceptical as to whether the flat could keep what it promised. But we found quickly that it did just that:

- most beautiful village of Spain - check

- 6 floors including roof terrace with gorgeous mountain view - check

- fully equipped, modern kitchen and tasteful interior design - check

- close to the best hikes (and climbs) on Mallorca - check

- a working wireless internet connection - check.

What more can I say? You will need a car, unless you are happy exploring the surrounding area on foot & by bike. You should expect some stair climbing, so if you are 60 and over and you intend to bring your parents with you, navigating the flat might be a bit challenging. Also, if one person is snoring really loudly, there is a chance that the remaining three persons will hear it because there is no door between the floors. But apart from these worst case scenarios I wouldn't know any reason to complain (and we Germans are world champions in finding reasons to complain!).

More random points:

- Carmen and the local person showing us the flat were both friendly, profesional, and fluent in English.

- There is a bar just opposite the house where the locals watch football games, so if that's the kind of evening entertainment you like, go for it.

- Free parking is about 150 m from the flat.

- A must do: Use the automatic orange squeezer and have a glass of freshly pressed orange juice every morning with breakfast while sitting on the terrace. Instant relaxation promised!

To sum up, then, I can recommend this flat to everyone who is reasonably fit, likes some comfort but doesn't have much money, wants to seriously relax and see Mallorca's most beautiful spots, and does not intend to spend his vacation lying at the beach. (You'll have to drive maybe 45 minutes for the nearest beautiful beach. Port Soller (30 mins away) has a beach, but it's not a pretty one.)

Fornalutx is located on the North Coast of Mallorca, 3 Km. North of Soller and 5 Km from Port of Soller. It is a picturesque Mediterranean mountain village with authentic local, traditional life. Stone houses, cobblestone streets, and unbelievable views, since it is surrounded by pine and oak trees, and orange and olive terraces. It is protected by the Spanish National Patrimony for its unique historic, architectural, and natural value. About 500 inhabitants, quiet but not isolated. This area of the island is not crowded with too many tourists because there aren't large hotels. Nature lovers, artists, and serious bikers and hikers prefer to visit this area in small groups or with families. Palma's airport is only 35 minutes away.
