Experience Country Living, Hawaiian Style! Farm animals, Orchards, Adventure
About Karen Greene
After "retiring" to Hawaii over ten years ago, from construction and teaching, in Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Florida, Calif, etc.. we have finally (mostly) completed our dream home in our own piece of paradise. We enjoy working outside on the property, in the orchard, trees, and the river; tending to our dog, kitties and barn pets, and spending time with our granddaughters, and their mom; our daughter the school teacher. Tim enjoys some horseshoes in the front yard, occasionally, and playing in the state tournaments in Hilo. He is always building, pruning, mowing and then admiring his views. Karen keeps busy with flowers, animals, and my studio/workshop under the house; where I have set up my little stations, for potting, painting, woodwork repairs, stained glass, and pottery, which we fire in the big gas kiln. We lived in the river hut for over a year, as we babysat our new granddaughter. It is available for rent now, also. After 15 years we still love it here, and feel so totally blessed.

Why Karen Greene chose Pepeekeo
When we first came to Hawaii we drove around the island, saw a FOR SALE sign along the highway and drove around the area. We noticed a swimming hole in the stream from Old Railroad Way, and made our way through the 10' tall cane grass to the stream, and said, "This is it!!!" 'IT' was already SOLD, and in escrow, but Karen kept calling the realtor until he said, "Good News Mr & Mrs Greene! Bring the money today!" So, we like to say, "God lead us here". That was 2 weeks after we had arrived, over 14 years ago. We bought another house, in Hawaiian Acres which we remodeled and had 2 vacation rental rooms, under the name "Country Gardens on the Old Volcano Trail". We decided to sell that house so we could put our time into our dream property... So, Tim built a hut, 30' above the lower swimming hole, and there we lived for over a year as he built the house, and Karen babysat our baby granddaughter...fun times, fun times. We have had many friends and family visit, and now we are ready to add you to our friend (or maybe even family) list.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Its all about the river. We love the river, it is cool under the African tulip trees, and the rush of water splashing over and around the rocks takes you to another world. There is no noise above the rush of the river. A dam, built during sugar cane farming times, widens the stream, and causes it to divide in many directions. Tim planned the guest suite to be right above that view. One can sit on the balcony for hours watching and being buried in the sound and sights of the cascading water and birds chirping. People drive here to go for walks through our area, down to the ocean, and up to Honomu, the town time forgot, on the way to Akaka Falls, and an amazing Zip-Line experience. They will stop on their walk to take pictures of our flowers, and animals and the view of the ocean from the road. We feel exceptionally blessed. And so will you!

Beautiful, Peaceful, and Completely Amazing
We have stayed in many condos and vacation rentals on the Big Island over the years, and Flower Hill Farm is by far the nicest we have ever experienced in every way.
The house is very comfortable, clean, in great condition, and it feels like (and is!) a true home. It is next to beautiful Makea Stream, which you can hear from every room and watch from the covered lanai!
Karen and Tim are great hosts and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. You will feel very welcomed and they go above and beyond to make sure your experience is wonderful. Buddy the dog is sweet, and there are cats too who visited when we missed ours!
The property has gorgeous landscaping and all sorts of tropical fruits which we enjoyed. Sunrises there over the ocean can be especially beautiful, we saw some that were purple and pink.
Consider yourself very fortunate if you are able to stay in this gorgeous, peaceful, and welcoming place. We were very sad to have to leave at the end of our visit and are already planning our return to Flower Hill Farm!
Karen has a place on Flower Hill! We enjoyed this so much. We slept great every night. We loved walking around the property and looking at all the fruit trees. Buddy is so loveable! Thank you for a great stay. And the honey tastes just like Flower Hill smells. delicious!
A real hidden treasure!
Beautiful, peaceful place to stay, thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our visit :)
Our stay was overall very nice. The lot can't be beat, with ocean views and a running stream off of the lanai. The only issues were the bed (almost un-sleepable for us...very old and a mattress like a hammock) and the furniture (it was uncomfortable and a little moldy). With just a little sprucing up this place would be perfect...Karen was a wonderful host and the area is just breathtaking.
Hi thanks for letting me know. I have had several people sit and sniff the couch and they don’t find it moldy or uncomfortable. But, we did find the bed way soft!
So, I have washed all the stuff cushion covers. And we are looking to purchase a new mattress. Somethings are totally unnoticed when so much is going on at a farm. So again thank you again for bringing it to to our attention it was lovely having you
This is a beautiful place to stay. Lovely gardens, comfortable sitting room, friendly hosts who gave us fresh eggs and fruit from their trees as well as tomatoes from their vines. We didn’t want to leave! Cooking on a hot plate was a bit of a challenge but there’s a great barbecue. All in all 5 stars for a perfect base to enjoy the wonders of this side of Big Island.
Beautiful setting for a quiet retreat
This was a lovely place to stay, not too far off the beaten track, with a lovely lanii looking out over the stream below. The host Karen was very friendly and welcoming. We were't sure we would miss a full kitchen, but using the hot plate and toaster oven was generally fine for breakfast - especially with the fresh eggs that Karen gave us. I was a little worried about the description of Buddy the dog, but he was very gentle - as someone who isn't great around dogs, he mostly kept his distance, though I might have felt uncomfortable travelling here alone. Sometimes Hawaii has difficult driveways, but there were no such problems here - a very easy driveway to get in and out of. We had a very nice time and found it a great place to visit Hilo and the surroundings, so nice for couples - I imagine this would be the perfect place for a small family, with the extensive garden. You will need to be an early riser (which is a very typical experience in Hawaii) with the sun streaming into the bedroom - there are blinds which might help, but we let the dawn wake us every morning. Karen's description of the apartment is incredibly accurate, I found. Karen was incredibly friendly; if anything, visiting here was more like a bed and breakfast experience in many ways - it was nice to be able to chat each morning, but having your own key was very nice, especially as we got back fairly late some nights.
I would definitely stay here again in the future.
We are out in Hawaiian country, the beauty of the ocean, mountain, and your own river are the main attraction. We are 3 miles from the botanical garden, on the scenic route, on the spectacular Onemea Bay. Which we can guide you to the walking path, directly to the ocean in the bay. There are ziplines, waterfalls, and beach parks within miles; and more all over the island. Just a few miles from Akaka Falls, and Honolii, a popular surf spot.
