About the property

This fabulous property, known as Jasmine House, is a beautiful old stone building, in the Venetian style, and consists of a main villa with pool (sleeps 4-6) and a pretty apartment ( Jasmine Apartment) with garden terrace but no pool (sleeps 2-4). Together they make a wonderful 4-bedroomed villa with pool (sleeps 8-10). It was renovated in 2015 to an extremely high standard of style and comfort.

If you just want to book the apartment, or just want to book the villa (with 3 bedrooms), please be clear which unit you are looking at. Also, the pictures are clearly marked either "villa" or "apartment" so that you can be absolutely sure what you will get!

The beautiful old stone property has been stylishly renovated by its English owners to retain as much of the Venetian character as possible, while providing some of the most luxurious and comfortable accommodation available in the whole of Croatia. When the 3-bed villa is booked separately from the apartment, the villa guests are completely private from apartment guests, and vice-versa, as the property has been very cleverly designed for this purpose.

It is located in a quiet village just a few steps above a pretty, bustling quayside with its shops and restaurants, on the charming island of Vis.

The island was recently chosen for the filming of "Mamma Mia 2 - Here we Go Again" in October 2017, with Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. Our house was selected to accommodate one of the most important VIP's involved in the film (we've had to sign an NDA so we can't reveal who. But we can assure you that if you book the house you will be following in the footsteps of Hollywood !

The great advantage of this location is that you don't need a car the whole time. Your evenings can be much more relaxing as you stroll around the bay deciding on your restaurant for the evening.

The property occupies the prime position on the bay, so it has wonderful views over the bay of Vis which is a picture postcard setting. There is a beautiful monastery on a promontory at the far side, a tiny island in the middle of the bay, and of course the turquoise Adriatic sea. You can watch the yachts and fishing boats come and go, and enjoy the evening sun as it sets across the bay. Vis is blessed with some stunning sunsets.

The island of Vis would suit people who want a completely different holiday, dislike commercialisation, and enjoy really good food and wine. They may also have an interest in history (lots of naval history), sailing, diving (Greek, Roman and 16c/17c/18c wrecks), vineyards, ecology (said to be the only totally organic island in the world) and incredible ice-cream.

The island is one of the few genuinely unspoilt islands in the Mediterranean - no high-rise hotels or villa parks here - yet it has a sophisticated Dalmatian culture and excellent food.

There are three main villages on the island - Vis 'Town' and Kut are on either side a a fabulous C-shaped bay on the north-eastern coast, while Komiza, a tiny fishing village is on the far west side of the island. The mountainous interior is scenic, well worth visiting. There are great beaches near to all the 3 main villages, and a few smaller ones down the east and south coast of the island, near to Stoncica, Milna and Rukavac. There are both pebble and sand beaches on Vis.

Please be aware that Vis is a hilly island and both Vis Town, Kut and Komiza have several sets of stone steps, usually on the lanes leading down to the quayside or towards the beaches. This holiday is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

About Jan Stewart

We are a semi-retired couple, who found the island of Vis by accident...and realised it was one of the truly magical places in the world! We fell in love with the island and set about buying a ruin and then commissioning a local builder to renovate it. No idea how we managed it, but we did, and now the house is a delight.

Jan Stewart purchased this house in 2004

Why Jan Stewart chose Vis

We didn't intend to buy a house, but like many holidaymakers we amused ourselves by asking a local agent to show us what was for sale, and as we walked up the steps of this house we saw the view and we knew we had to move heaven and earth to make it ours.

What makes this house unique

The view - it's glorious!

Great for teenagers/children

  • 5 of 5

I am 15 and I really enjoyed my stay at this property. My room was very big and it had a door directly to the pool as well as the property has full access to fast wifi. Over all I had such a good time here and I would definitely recommend this to families with teenagers/children

beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

Our half term break was perfect. Sunny days, wonderful views over the bay at Vis and truly luxurious villa. This is the best stay we have had on the Dalmation coast and islands and we have been coming since our daughter was a toddler. Vis town is just a short stroll away and in the immediate vicinity there are shops, smart restaurants and bars at Kut. The villa is slightly set back from the waterfront so is pleasantly quiet but has fantastic views over the bay and yachts in the harbour. We didn't need a car as we arrived on a ferry from a Split. Highly recommended.

Beautifully restored property in stunning location

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed in a few Croatian properties but this easily tops the list.

Almost all the coastline in Croatia is beautiful, but it's often hard to find really nice accommodation. This property solves the problem - a traditional and spacious Croatian village house that has been restored to the very highest standards.

Most of the rooms have stunning views over the peaceful harbour of Vis town. Furnishings throughout are high quality, and the beds are large and particularly comfortable. So are the bathrooms, which are well appointed with large, luxurious shower spaces. We didn't eat in often, but the kitchen is, like the rest of the house, extremely well-equipped, and there's an outside table with a great view. There are terraces on three levels, and all work well, with plenty of loungers and other seats and fantastic sea views.

We rented the whole property, which comfortably accommodates eight people in four double or twin bedrooms. But for smaller parties you could go for either the three bedroom house or the single bedroom apartment, both of which work well on their own.

The UK owners were very friendly and easy to deal with, and everything worked like clockwork.

Vis itself is the nicest Croatian island I've been to. Quiet and not over-developed but with plenty of nice restaurants and bars, almost all with stunning waterside views. And it's a great place to people watch, with some really ritzy yachts interspersed with the usual flotilla sailors.

Try Villa Kaliopa for a special meal on a balmy night, with secluded tables laid out in a garden of mature palm trees. It's probably the best restaurant, but still good value and not expensive by UK standards. And don't miss Roki's for a delicious lamb stew and the best red wine on the island. It's a little inland, but deservedly popular. Phone them to make a reservation, and they'll pick you up and drop you back home again at the end of the evening.

All in all, this is a fabulous place to stay for a really relaxing holiday in luxurious surroundings. As I said, the best I've found so far in eight visits to Croatia - and we're planning to return!

Perfectly located, this wonderful villa and pretty apartment are above the lively waterfront in Kut, a charming village of Venetian-built houses which rises uphill from the quayside. Kut has a good selection of shops and restaurants, and is just 20 minutes' walk around the bay from the larger Vis Town.

From all the main villa and apartment windows and terraces there are wonderful views of the sea and the stunning bay of Vis. All the terraces, including the apartment terrace, are great places to relax in the evening and to enjoy the breath-taking sunsets for which Vis is famous. The Adriatic sea is just a very short walk down some stone village steps and the beach is at the end of a lane which is just below the property. Apart from the wonderful Venetian architecture, the other big advantage to being in Kut is that you're just a few minute's walk away from all the good restaurants (most are in Kut) so no scary night-time drives around the hair-pin bends to get back to an isolated villa in a less populated area. And no need to get in a car and drive miles for your bread in the morning. There are two bakeries, two greengrocer's and small grocery store just a few minutes' walk away, down the village steps, while a fish market and a local fruit/veg market are in Vis Town which is a 20 minute walk away along the picturesque lane which winds around the bay.
