Axarquia (Costa del Sol) Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Romantic & private setting for a couple looking to relax in the countryside

'La Paz' offers comfortable, rustic studio accommodation at a traditional Andalusian hillside farmhouse set in 5 acres of private land amidst almond and olive trees. This tranquil retreat enjoys far reaching mountain views from a South facing location; perfect for relaxing by the pool in one of the sunniest parts of Europe.

The farmhouse or 'finca' has been beautifully restored while retaining original rustic features including heavily beamed ceilings, tiled floors and wooden shuttered windows. These combine with modern comforts to provide a private setting in the countryside yet within a short 15 minute drive of the nearest village, Comares, and 45 min to the coast. Around the pool are several terraces (illuminated at night) sunny and shaded, where there is ample space for alfresco dining, enjoying a BBQ and unwinding on the loungers.

Comares, a beautiful hilltop village, offers good facilities incl. a village shop, pharmacy, bank with cash machine & several bar/restaurants.Nearby hamlet Los Ventorros has 2 excellent bar/restaurants serving meals and tasty tapas!

Local lifestyle: 'La Paz' is located in a very rural and much unchanged part of Southern Andalusia. Local life here is unhurried and relaxed. You can still find mules used for carrying sacks of olives or almonds through the hill farms to the villages. And when driving from 'La Paz' towards the coast the country road passes through acres of citrus fruit trees and avocados.

'La Paz' is a beautiful location for country walks. From the door of the Farmhouse Studio there are miles of tracks to walk - well away from cars and the bustle of everyday life. Spring and Autumn are perfect walking times. In summertime you may want only to relax by the pool with a cooling swim before lunch on the terrace.

Local facilities: Don´t be surprised to pass a herd of goats on your way up the hill to 'Comares' located at around 800 meters above sea level. This charming 'pueblo blanco', with it´s narrow winding streets, is the highest hilltop village in the Axarquia region with fantastic views all the way to the coast.

Comares and the hamlet of 'Los Ventorros' (10 min from La Paz) will provide you with a number of small village shops, bars, simple restaurants and banks (one with cash dispenser) to make your stay comfortable. Town facilities including a modern shopping center, cinemas, market and water park are located in Velez Malaga - some 40 min drive. Torre del Mar beach resort is 5 minutes further with many beach cafes, seafood restaurants and a wide selection of entertainment. Golf, Go karting and water sports are nearby.

Exploring Andalusia: 'La Paz' is the perfect rural base to explore the most popular sights of Andalusia: Granada and the Alhambra Palace are just 90 minutes drive - with the Sierra Nevada ski resort a short drive from Granada city center. Seville can be reached in 2 hours by car - well worth the effort! Cordoba and Ronda are beautiful and a similar distance. Nerja and the world famous caves is a one hour drive and Malaga, with it´s culture, including the Picasso museum, beaches and great shopping facilities is a one hour drive through the 'Montes de Malaga' national park.

About Carl Cullimore

We, Carl and Maria Cullimore, came to Comares in 1999 with the idea of buying a holiday home…and we are still here!

We continue to be thrilled by the views and beautiful, colourful landscape of Andalusia. The white washed village of Comares is both unique and unspoiled yet only an hour from Malaga. The perfect rural base to relax and explore.

La Paz, our finca meaning “peace” was renovated and a swimming pool was built on the hillside. We converted part of the farmhouse to a self contained studio overlooking the pool and our holiday rentals idea became a reality when we welcomed our first guests in 2002.

Our next project was Villa Romo, spacious accommodation with pool and popular with families. Friends owning properties locally and wishing to rent their villas for holidays have entrusted us with the keys and management responsibilities.

We are proud to showcase a small, quality selection of individual villas, beach houses apartments and even a seaside Fisherman’s Cottage. We provide a professional, bespoke service which can include the rental marketing and maintenance of holiday properties in the Axarquia region of Andalusia.

As relaxing as it gets!

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks at La Paz in early August. We were looking for somewhere which would be peaceful and most importantly a holiday property with its own pool. Well, we got that and much more than we could ever wish for.

My first words to Maria and Carl when we arrived at La Paz was that the photos on this website don't do it justice. The surrounding countryside is spectacular, the pool is incredible and the accommodation is exactly what you need with a well-sized living quarters, excellent bathroom and cooking facilities and even a bit of UK TV thrown in for good measure!

Many people claim the drive to La Paz, along winding tracks, is a bit intimidating. But for us it was all part of the experience and we got used to it no time. Basically, for the levels of peace and quiet you're going to get, such drives are necessary.

We found it easy to explore the surrounding region, we made day-trips to Granada, Cordoba, Malaga and Nerja. But the little village of Los Ventorros was always good for a sneaky beer or two and the mountain top town of Comares is spectacular, has a decent supermarket and some nice places to eat.

Last but not least, a word or two about our hosts, Maria and Carl. They were absolutely perfect and made us feel completely welcome throughout our stay. Like many other guests have said, they never intrude on your privacy yet are always around to help you with any queries you may have. We really enjoyed meeting them, sharing stories, travel tips, cooking tips and the occasional drink!

And why not finish by mentioning La Paz's most famous residents, Mottie and Jeanie - two of the most fantastic, entertaining and kind-hearted dogs we've ever had the pleasure to meet. The lazy afternoons in or by the pool were always made more entertaining by the odd game of football with Mottie or by Jeanie's funny smiling face. I'm not the biggest lover of dogs, but it's impossible to not love this pair.

If it's a relaxing break, far away from the madness of city life you're after, then this is one of the best places you can go to.

Thanks Carl and Maria, for an unforgettable holiday!

Owner's Response: It was a delight to meet Steve & Claudia and swop some travel stories. With 2 weeks at La Paz they were able to chill out and enjoy the facilities and make use of the central Andalucian location to visit some of the key sights Southern Spain has to offer. After a day trip out to the city it was always pleasing to see them relaxing by the swimming pool with a cold drink! We look forward to seeing them back at La Paz in the future?! Carl.

Our 'Happy Place' - 3rd visit !

  • 5 of 5

This was our third visit to La Paz and it certainly won't be our last. The studio itself it lovely and clean, it's big enough for two people to have a lovely romantic stay and the bed is REALLY comfortable. The first time we visited La Paz it was our first holiday together, the second time my fiancee proposed to me and this time we enjoyed spending time together away from the rest of the world! It is a place we will always re-visit. The scenery is simply stunning, there is an outside bar and fridge, so you don't need to move far from your sun lounger to grab a beer or a vino, there is also outside speakers so you can play music, although we prefer the tranquillity and sound of nature. The BBQ is lovely, but if you want to venture out Table Mountain is a short drive and the food and wine is excellent, the staff are really friendly and speak excellent English, but were more than happy for me to try out my Spanish skills on them. In Comares village there is a small shop, which stocks pretty much everything that you will need, and whenever we go to the village we admire the views from the square and remember the romantic proposal I received back in November. They do the best coffee in the world at the little bar - and a great Bacon & Tomato Sandwich ! All in all we love La Paz - when I need to think of my 'Happy Place' it's lying on a lilo at La Paz. Carl & Maria, thank you for a lovely stay, and a great night out at Table Mountain. Love and tickles to Tommy Dog - my legs are still recovering from the endless walks we enjoyed with him. Echamos de menos todos - Besos xxx

A slice of paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is a must go see little gem. If you want total relaxation ' La Paz ' is your destiny. Booking was easy and the directions were on point. The owners Maria and Carl live in the main house next to the studio and offer a warm and friendly welcome, nothing is a bother and at the same time they much respect your privacy. The accommodation is peaceful, spotless and tasteful, full of traditional fixtures and fittings and has everything you could possibly need. The owners have the most adorable doggie 'Tommy' who we fell head over heals for and they even let us take him on walkies which was fantastic as we missed our own dogs. The pool area if excellent nice and deep with a bar at one end. As guests you are able to use the pool bar fridge for beers, wine etc. there is a sound system which you just plug your phone into, we cannot stress how amazing it was. 'La Paz' is right up in the mountains and the journey up to it was breath taking and fun. The small traditional village of Commares is about 10/15 minutes drive with a few good bars and a well stocked cheap shop. We never expected a lovely welcome pack either, they just think of everything. It was our second honeymoon and honestly it more than delivered on value for money, the personal touches, the scenery but most of all the warmth of the owners and Tommy. Jim & Ali Scotland...

Arcadia in Axarquia

  • 5 of 5

Just what the doctor ordered, metaphorically and literally.

Off the beaten tracks' beaten track, the perfect location for long walks through the olive and almond goves with the added bonus of constant entertainment from the canine double act.

Thank you Carl and Maria for sharing your special home with us and for your generosity, warm friendship and good humour and not least the ideal weather for hiking in the hills.

We miss you all and look forward to meeting again soon.

Sheer perfection

  • 5 of 5

We have now stayed at beautiful La Paz three times.

There are just sometimes that places are special in your hearts, and yes La Paz is one of those.

We love everything about the studio accommodation, the views and the pool are fantastic, there are endless places you can sit in the sun or shade, 31 chairs for two people now that's choice.

But without doubt the best thing for us are the owners Carl & Maria and their two dogs the beautiful Ginny and cheeky Tommy.

They are never intrusive but will help in any way when asked.

All in all we as always found La Paz perfect for us.

An look forward to returning soon.

Owner's Response: A beautifully written review. After 3 visits in 3 years Frank and Brenda are almost locals! Ginny and Tommy greet them on arrival and we always enjoy a small glass of wine together! ( with Frank & Brenda not the dogs!). Note to self; no need to buy more chairs! Thanks for your kind words and hope to see you a 4th time? Carl, Maria, Ginny & Tommy the pup

Amazing, cant wait to return next year

  • 5 of 5

Where do we start, I guess the initial journey up the mountain, we collected our rental car and following Carls perfect directions hit the mountain at around midnight.............. pitch black and 4kms of mountain pass to tackle, daunting, but we made it.( To be fair once you have done it once its not a bad journey at all)

Carl and Maria kindly left the poolside lights on for us so we could see the studio, first impressions were WOW!!!!

Everything is exactly as described , and as a few others have said the pictures really dont do it justice, we loved it so much that after a few days of being here were rebooking for next year.

The studio has everything you need for a perfect relaxing holiday, the pool area is fantastic and the welcome from Ginny and Tommy everytime we returned from days out put a smile on our faces.

Comares is a beautiful little town perched on top of its own peak, and the Coviran supermarket here had everything we needed for our 2 week stay.

There is so much to do in the area, wouldnt know where to start describing it all. We travelled to Nerja, Lake Vinuela, Caleta de Velez and Torre del Mar, but wanted to take advantage of the stunning views around the pool so tried to stay here as much as we could.

Special mention has to go to Table Mountain in Los Ventorros and their wonderful food, and great atmosphere and also to Chiringuito Estrella near the lighthouse on Torre Del Mar seafront where we ended up being regulars for their plate of sardines and bucket of beer for 7 euros!!!!!!!

Carl and Maria were perfect hosts, always on hand offering fantastic local knowledge and advice but never intrusive, cant wait to return next year.

Thanks once again Carl, Maria, Ginny and Tommy.
