Guestbook comments from the owner

Yes, we really enjoyed our week at Alice Cottage. You might like to know that we took our entire family of bears (including Winnie the Pooh), beavers, donkeys and assorted others (like Wol, Kanga & Roo and Eeyore). They have written about their holiday on our website which you might like to look at http://www.wolandfamily.org.uk/diary/:

"We have all been on holiday to Dartmouth. But most especially this was Winnie's holiday. We stayed in this marvellous place called Alice Cottage which is where Christopher Robin used to live. So Winnie took charge of the whole week - we went on trains and boats, visited an abbey, an otter sanctuary and a rare breeds farm and park where Wol met some owls. You can read about Alice Cottage here. Do book a holiday there - you will have a wonderful time. And have a look at the Diary page to see more of our photographs."

The garden is really beautiful - we had a reasonably sunny week but a bit cold so we didn't sit out as much as I would have liked but we did enjoy exploring it and trying to name all of the plants.

We found Brill Plaice and the Green Dragon to be really good eating places - we tried Deer Park but they had run out of food and could only offer snacks! The cafe at Blackpool Sands was excellent for breakfast. We were amused, though, to find no sand on the beach!

We are steam train enthusiasts and bought Jubilee Passes from the Dartmouth Steam Railway. For about £30 each we had train trips, river cruises, a sea cruise and bus rides worth over £120 each - as well as discounts on some other admission fees. I do suggest to anyone interested in steam, boats or scenery that it is a really good value purchase.

All in all we had a wonderful week - and Winnie will be talking about it at the Tedz Convention for many weeks to come.

Summer holiday

  • 5 of 5

The family and I went Alice Cottage last summer and although the weather could have been kinder we could not fault our accommodation. Alice Cottage is a beautifully appointed property with heaps of charm and character. The location of the cottage is great for exploring the South Hams district and is close to the beautiful beach at Blackpool Sands. I had many questions before our vacation and the owners were extremely helpful and understanding.

Lovely cottage - and so peaceful

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Alice Cottage - and even better than first time. The cottage is in a beautiful location surrounded by fields and country lanes with a small brook just across the road. The garden is a wonderful feature - designed and maintained to encourage wildlife with lots of colour and a gorgeous Rhododendron. For us, the association with Christopher Robin is so very important; we love to see the pictures of Winne and friends around the place and the garden really feels like a miniature Hundred Acre Woods. Our own Winnie - and many other bears and creatures - came with us and loved being there.

Owner's Response: We also feel that Alice Cottage is a very special place and are delighted when guests feel the same way. The wildlife garden we have tried to keep as Christopher Robin wished and is described in 'Beyond the World of Pooh - selections from the memoirs of Christopher Milne'.

Alice cottage

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely comfortable cottage. There was everything we needed there. It was really peaceful and a good place to recharge the batteries. The garden was a joy. It was situated outside Dartmouth but the park and ride service was very good and much easier than trying to park in Dartmouth. Definitely worth a visit.

A little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this cottage was wonderful! It is in a perfect location and there is a beautiful walk to the beach from here, not too far for children, where there is a lovely eco cafe serving great breakfasts and meals (we walked it every day). It is also in easy reach of Dartmouth by car but would recommend using the park and ride as parking is difficult in Dartmouth (this made it fun for the kids). The cottage is spacious and simply decorated but there is everything you need here, even a log burner. The garden is utterly stunning, little winding paths lead you between the lovely flowers, and there are several places to sit and enjoy the view. A babbling brook runs down the road in front of the cottage so there is always the soft sound of water and bird song. I'm sitting here trying to be objective and find a fault but I simply can't, it is a perfect place to stay and we had one of our best holidays ever here!

A Delightful Holiday Cottage

  • 5 of 5

A lovely, well-appointed cottage, in a good location for visiting Dartmouth, Slapton and Kingsbridge.

We had a very enjoyable week, despite the rainy weather. A particular delight was watching the birds from the sitting room window, especially the Nuthatches and Jays. Hump-backed Whale watching from Slapton Sands was another unexpected treat.

Spotlessly clean, spacious, good location and well equipped

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay here in South Devon Very lucky with weather. Beautiful coast, rivers and countryside. We spent nearly all our time walking but there is a lot do do in this area. Cottage was easy for access to Dartmouth and both Dart and salcombe estuaries especially as the car and passenger ferries were both still frequent in September. Cottage was quiet , clean and well equipped, beds comfortable. The four stars instead of five was because the garden although large was really only practical for sitting in a small area at lunchtime as tree cover , steepness, meant not as welcoming am and pm in September. Tea, coffee milk and biscuits present on arrival was appreciated. We did think the cottage was good value for money.

Alice Cottage is situated in South Devon in the picturesque South Hams in a valley, a 10 minute drive from Dartmouth with one of the finest natural harbours in England, and a short walk from Blackpool Sands beach and its amenities overlooking which you will find views rivalling those of the French Riviera. Nearby attractions include Dartmouth Castle, Britannia Royal Naval Collage, Greenway, former home of Agatha Christie with gardens overlooking the River Dart and Coleton Fishacre, a National Trust house and garden. For children we recommend Woodlands, a family theme park and the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway. Dartmouth hosts a music festival in early May and a food festival, in October. Its famous regatta is held at the end of August. The town has a cinema and theatre, craft shops, cafes and boutiques, including the Harbour Bookshop, once owned by Christopher Robin. Slapton Sands, with its D-Day connections and nature reserve, ideal for bird watching lies to the west.

Blackpool Sands beach is consistently ranked one of the UK's top beaches with an excellent café, shop and water sports equipment for hire.
