Overview

About the property

Spacious two bedroom cottage on one level overlooking unspoilt countryside

Originally a small barn, Longwood Cottage is set in the most beautiful Herefordshire countryside. Rated as 4 Stars by Visit England, the cottage is single storey, accessed by a sloping ramp from the garden and car park. There are two bedrooms, both with windows in two directions. Bedrooms have been recently re-furnished, the larger one furnished in light oak has two single beds and the second bedroom furnished in beech, has a double bed. Both rooms have a wardrobe, dressing table, chest of drawers as well as bedside tables, an armchair and table lamps. The large traditionally furnished sitting room has patio doors that open out on to the sun deck. This room has two sofas, comfortable armchairs and occasional tables, as well as a dining area with table, four chairs and a sideboard. There is also a desk which is packed with local tourist information. There is a small sound system, a Sony flat screen television and a DVD player. The sun deck is an ideal location for breakfast or supper, or just a relaxing glass of wine in the evening. The sunny kitchen is fully fitted and has a fridge, small freezer, microwave and full size cooker. From the main bathroom there are the most amazing views - truly a loo with a view. It has a "P" shaped bath with shower, as well as toilet, wash basin and drying cupboard in this room. In the hall there is a second cloakroom with a toilet and washbasin.

The garden has plentiful car parking and leads into Long Wood itself which is about 100 metres away. Well behaved dogs are most welcome in this property, subject to conditions imposed by the owners. The garden is secure and walks can be taken in the wood, the orchard and eight-acre meadow with its pond. It really is doggie heaven!

The most outstanding feature of this property is its location. Situated off a winding country lane, in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty guests can be in Ross on Wye, Ledbury or Hereford or on the M.50 motorway in less than 20 minutes. With outstanding views in all directions there are many walks that can be taken without the car. The two local pubs, The Butchers Arms and the Crown at Woolhope are known for their good food as well as home-made cider and perry.

The hamlet of Sollers Hope is situated in South Herefordshire amongst some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in Britain. Surrounded by woods, orchards, farmland and rolling green hills, it is bordered by Marcle Ridge from where there are superb views towards the Malvern Hills to the east, the Cotswolds to the south east and the Welsh Borders and Black mountains to the west. The River Wye is just over two miles away and the historic city of Hereford is just over eight miles distant. There is easy access to many miles of footpaths including the Wye Valley Walk. The Forest of Dean is not far away where there are beautiful walks and many activities including cycle hire, horse riding, golf and accompanied canoe expeditions on the River Wye as well as fishing. There are many good country pubs locally all of which have an excellent reputation for their food. The nearby village of Much Marcle is the home of Westons Cider, where you will be welcome to take a guided tour and tasting. There are also many ancient churches, fascinating old houses, and gardens open to the public, as well as interesting leisure drives such as the Black and White Village Trail, or our favourite ride over the hills to Hay on Wye.

Our own private woodland, Long Wood, is inhabited by many forms of wildlife including foxes, fallow deer, hares, buzzards and badgers. Many species of birds have been recorded. Originally an ancient woodland site, part of the wood was replanted with conifers by the Forestry Commission in the 1950'2 and 60's although areas have now been cleared and replaced with native trees. We have several attractive glades which give ideal conditions for many wild flowers including rarities like Herb Paris and early Purple Orchids.

Why Mrs Veronica Harris chose Hereford

This property is ideal for country lovers who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life. Well behaved dogs are most welcome, providing their owners make every effort to clear up after them. Sitting on the sun deck guests can look for miles in all directions and there can be no better location for breakfast or an evening glass of wine. Longwood Cottage always wins top marks for cleanliness during its annual tourist board inspection, it is regularly redecorated and always offers guests a warm welcome.

What makes this cottage unique

There can be few places in England that offer such wide open spaces. Just sit and enjoy the view from the deck, or walk in Long Wood itself. There is a picnic table alongside the pond in eight acre meadow, and the orchard has many ancient apple and pears trees. The bird life is fascinating and in the Spring there are many wild flowers in Long Wood. For guests who enjoy the country life this property cannot be bettered.

Fantastic dog friendly cottage

  • 5 of 5

A beautifully clean and cosy cottage that provided just what we wanted-peaceful surroundings, gorgeous views and relaxation. Thank you to Veronica for the warm welcome and the very thorough directions to reach the cottage. Highly recommended, especially for dog owners.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the lovely review. We do try hard to make the cottage a clean and comfortable place to stay and its good for us to know when we have been successful. So much to see and do in Herefordshire but sometimes its just nice to chill out on the deck and enjoy the view. Hope to see you again at Longwood in the not to distant future

Excellent cottage suitable for families in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We recently visited the cottage with our 3 young children (6, 3 and 3months). It was the perfect escape from the rat race at home. Veronica was extremely welcoming and the cottage was prestine and provided everything we needed.

There is a private garden so we could let the kids play freely and woodland which was great for morning walks and exploring.

Highly recommended.

Comfy cottage in a fabulous location - dog heaven.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage had an old fashioned feel, but is well equipped and pleasant. It was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for a week's stay. There were no surprises as the website provided accurate information. When we walked in, I was taken with how light it was in the good sized lounge, and the fabulous view of the seriously rural surroundings, with nature and wildlife. The terrace area was especially pleasant for a cup of tea. The garden was huge with lots of space to park and for our dog to run around in. The neighbouring wood and fields were big enough for substantial walks for any dog, without heading off onto the many public footpaths or going in the car to one of the many attractions of the area.

The owner welcomed us to the cottage, explained things, and offered use of a washing machine, as the spring that feeds the house doesn't allow for a machine or dishwasher. The water was so lovely to drink - soft and chlorine free. We were given information about what would be helpful for our dog who received a large basket of snacks and useful dog stuff. There was also a lot of tourist information including some about the many dog friendly pubs, cafes and shops in the area too. Ross and Ledbury are nearby and easy to get to as the rural lanes around the cottage lead onto more major roads. We shall return to see more of the area's attractions, and to enjoy the countryside. It was ideal for two to four adults who enjoy a country holiday or are happy to drive a little way to rural attractions and appealing small towns. It's good to stay at with or without dogs.

Owner's Response: The Tourist Board Inspector said I should say it was "traditional" which it is. Comfortable but not very Ikea ! Having said that, I am so pleased you enjoyed the views and that Douglas enjoyed his holiday too. As you say, lots of lovely walks with or without a dog. Hope to see you again.

We love the hilly countryside that surrounds Longwood Cottage. Lots of off road walks including alongside the River Wye, beautiful views and so many nice places to stop to eat. The Forest of Dean is not far away with its cycle trails and steam railways. We very much enjoy the Black and White Village Trail in north Herefordshire, especially stopping at the Steppes Tea Shop for lunch. Another favourite drive is to Hay on Wye, or on further to the Brecon Beacons.

We are so lucky to live in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with such lovely views, yet can be on the M.50 motorway within 15 minutes and can access Cheltenham or Gloucester's shops in less 50 minutes.

However, the crowning glory of Herefordshire is its "unspoiltness"
