We loved the House of Olives
We - 4 adults 2 children - stayed for 2 weeks in the second half of July and had a great time. The owners Dora and Nunu are genuinely lovely, welcoming people. The pictures on the website reflect the property well. The villa is situated in a picturesque typically Portuguese village on cobbled narrow streets about 45 minutes drive from Porto Airport. It is not easy to find, even using sat nav and we had to engage some late evening assistance from some friendly locals to find it. If you are after complete peace and quiet I wouldn't say this is the place for you because it is a proper working, rural village with all the sound effects, cocks a crowing from 4am and so on. People still wash their carpets, etc, in a well at the bottom of the street, the old boys take a glass or two of port at 10am and so on - good stuff. The pool was great and cleaned regularly. The house was also very clean and the towels and sheets changed halfway through. The beds are rock hard and I'd recommend Nunu gets some cushions for the sun loungers as well - otherwise it is a bit of a hard sit down! That said the house had a lovely atmosphere, it was well proportioned for the 6 of us (we didn't use the 4th bedroom, so there was more space available). The owners supplied us with a selection of wines, bread and chorizo on arrival and added to the wine later in the week. Viana do Castelo is a lovely place, as is Ponte de Lima and we also visited FC Porto museum (need to book in advance for the tour). The house is air conditioned in the main living area but the individual bedrooms are not, however, our experience was that this was fine as the rooms did not get overheated. The kitchen was well proportioned and we had lots of good meals sitting outside the house. It takes about 15 minutes to the Viana sea front area, 10 minutes or so to the Continente supermarket in Viana, which is the best one. There are two restaurants in the village called Lima and Sabores, both good for local fare such as salt cod fish and pork steaks, also there's a nearby fish restaurant called Pedro Alta, which I thought was excellent. In the village, onthe main road is a cafe that did great coffee and excellent cakes and pastries- as well as Super Bock, the beer of the holiday. Many thanks to Nunu and Dora for a lovely holiday.
