About the property

2 bdrm farmstay with swimming pond, sauna, yoga studio, bakery, & livestock

This light filled home invites you to read in the window seat, grill on the deck, cozy up to the woodstove, or get creative in the kitchen. Outside there is much to explore: sit on the bridge and watch the swallows, drop in on a yoga class at Down Dog Studio (yes, we have a yoga studio on the farm), feed the pigs, walk the trails, take a sauna.

The house is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath with 2 queen beds and a twin. Additional people may camp or use foldout mattresses provided. The kitchen is stocked with basics (oil, sugar, flour, oats, salt, pepper, spices, etc.) and is set up to cook and bake.

The Field House is located next to the pond and removed from the activity of the barn, farm house, gardens and bakery allowing you to choose if you want to engage with the farm or enjoy your own retreat.

You can learn more about the farm from our website (not able to post it because VRBO does not allow links to sites with blogs) www dot midnightsfarm dot com.

This is a working farm so there may be occasional machine noise (haying, tractor, compost operation) and some truck/equipment traffic on the farm road near the house.

Idyllic winter retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time. The house and pastoral surroundings were the perfect antidote to Seattle urban life and Faith was such a warm and welcoming host! The bounty from a working farm - complimentary vegetables, plus the mouthwatering sausage we bought at the Midnight Farm farmstand just steps away made for a wonderful first night dinner. Couldn't have been more local or scrumptious. Exploring parts of Lopez didn't leave any time for trying out the woodstove sauna ... it will have to wait until next time.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed! It was great to meet you and your sweet Mom. This is my favorite time of year on the island. Hope you do come back and try out that sauna.

Merry White Christmas!

  • 4 of 5

Loved our stay in the peaceful field cabin.....a toasty fire was lit to welcome us as we arrived along with fresh farm eggs and winter greens in the frig.

We are looking forward to returning in warmer weather when we can participate in the farm activities. Thank you so much for sharing your cabin!

One issue: when showering, water escapes onto the bathroom floor......

Really enjoyed our stay with our kids (3 and 5). The farm was a lovely environment and we keep coming back to Lopez Island. The property was clean and very well managed. Given it was hot, swimming in the nearby pond was perfect. There was always something going on around the farm to entertain the kids (there were 2 week old piglets during our stay). We'd plan on returning. There aren't many negatives, but worth being aware that internet on Lopez isn't always the fastest when everyone's on it in the evenings,, but this is a great place to really disconnect relax. We absolutely loved it.

About Faith Van De Putte

You will drive right past our house on the way to the Field House. We both have deep roots on the Island. David started coming here with his family when he was 6 and Faith grew up here, in a little house her family built, in her great grandparents old alfalfa field. David was a commercial fisherman in Alaska and bought the land after a good season. He is the visionary who planted the 1,000+ trees in the hedgerow, built the yoga studio, the sauna, etc. David raised two daughters on the farm (Ani in highschool and Vilina, off at college). Faith had left the island and returned after 18 years away. We met 5 years ago and as they say "the rest is history"!

On the farm David's passion is compost. He runs the only Department of Ecology approved on-farm composting facility in the County. We are proud to divert yard debris from the burn pile and keep that fertility bio-available by turning it into compost.

Faith manages most of the gardens and the hoophouse. Both of us enjoy the animals- the Murray Grey cattle and the pigs. We are happy to show you around!

We are committed to living solution to climate change and you will see many ways that this has influenced the design and managment choices on the farm. The Field House is a passive solar design and all the new buildings have high efficiency standards. We installed 9.5 KW photovoltaic array in 2013 and are able to meet most of our power needs. The compost facility is focused around diverting waste from burn piles and putting that carbon back into the soil where it can promote vitality, feed the plants and us! We rotionally graze our cattle to promote carbon sequestration in the soil.

We are committed to sharing this beautiful place with the local Lopez community and beyond through the yoga studio, public walking trails and occasional community events. We are excited to open it up to visitors and provide an opportunity to step into island life with both its people and its solitude

Why Faith Van De Putte chose Lopez Island

In the center of the island, sun, open pastures, marshes, a historic orchard and turn of the century barn. Who wouldn't think it was the perfect place?

What makes this farmhouse unique

This is a working farm and we welcome folks engaging with our lifestyle. Help us move the cattle, feed the pigs your food scraps, peek in at Barn Owl Bakery, dig in the compost and marvel at how hot it is, harvest from the garden, help with some planting or weeding.

Many: rocky bluffs, pebble or sand

Lopez Island has a wealth of public access to beaches, both dramatic high rocky bluffs with swift tides below, long sandy walks and pocket bays with pebbles you want to put in your pocket and take home. There is a fabulous Farmer's Market on Saturdays. If you are here on a Fri, Sat or Sun stop by the "Take it or Leave it" at the dump and look for fun, free stuff. The island is great for biking- some people call it flat but it really just has small ups and downs!
