About Claire Hambly
Willow Mill has been a family home since 1999, we started running it as a holiday let in 2016.
Why Claire Hambly chose Saint Kew
The houses are characterful, comfortable and warm. The location in the heart of the village next to the stream, the church and close to the St Kew Inn is magical. Our children love having adventures in the woods, making dens and playing in the stream. It is a great place to unwind after a day at the beach or a long coastal walk.

Wonderful, peaceful and charming
We have had another wonderful week at Willow Mill. The house has everything we needed, including a great selection of books to peruse in wet weather. The garden is looking autumnal and beautiful, we enjoyed making apple pie with some of the apples, and the children loved exploring and playing in the stream. The house is well furnished and was lovely and cosy and warm. We enjoyed lighting the downstairs woodburner, and the dog enjoyed snoozing in front of it. Sleeping in the upstairs room, dozing off to the sound of the stream is the best destress therapy. We also had a delicious meal at the local pub. Thank you, we are already missing it, and will definitely be back.
Beautiful but tired and needs a good clean
The mill house and barn are indeed in an idyllic setting and if given a good deep clean and redecorated they would be wonderful. Little Barn is very little and the owners have tried to squeeze too many beds into it, resulting in very cramped accomodation. Willow Mill is a lovely old house though the decor and some of the furnishings are very tired. Though not dirty neither property was up to the standard of cleanliness I would expect from a holiday rental, especially not at such a high end price range.
Specifics: We found hair in the bathroom sink, the cooker hood extractor was filthy and dripped dirty oil onto our food. The barbecue was still dirty I assume from previous guests. The bath and floor were stained in Willow Mill and the ground floor shower very dark and dingy with stained dirty grout in the tiling, it needed completely retiling really. Kitchen cupboards in Willow Mill felt sticky. The owners didn't seem concerned when informed about the lack of cleanliness, and took some persuading to send someone to fix a bedroom door that didn't shut in Little Barn.
We are sorry that Melissa was not happy with Willow Mill and Little Barn but her review does not fairly reflect the property or how we dealt with her comments at the time.
Melissa's review is not consistent with our direct feedback from other guests nor with other reviews of Willow Mill and Little Barn on for example airb'n'b. Melissa's review is also factually incorrect: for example, she says the décor is tired but the house was repainted throughout eighteen months ago.
Melissa says that we "didn't seem concerned", which is far from the truth – we want everyone staying at Willow Mill and Little Barn to enjoy the house and their holiday. We ourselves were on holiday when Melissa emailed us. We immediately rang Melissa apologising and seeking to address her concerns. We explained that the extractor fan cartridges could simply be removed from the unit and cleaned in the dishwasher or by hand. We did not take "some persuading" to send around our handyman to fix the door – we arranged it with him immediately after speaking to Melissa.
To summarise, we very much want our guests to enjoy their stay at the house. We are sorry that Melissa was disappointed but we do not feel that her comments accurately reflect the facts
An idyllic week in both the Mill and the Barn both were comfortable and well equipped.
We were a family party of 14 who have been frequent visitors to the North Cornish coast. We visited some old haunts Polzeath for surfing Rock for Daymer Bay walks and Lundy Bay for a special Birthday celebration picnic lunch. We greatly enjoyed relaxing in your wonderful garden with magnolia in full bloom being an added bonus and we hardly needed to leave it. Of course the close proximity of the Kew Inn was popular with the teenagers. We were blessed with dry and sunny spring weather for most of the week.
We found both houses very comfortable and well equipped .
If we had one point to raise it is the lack of separate bathroom facilities for the rooms on the upper floor in the Mill. The small bedroom was occupied by our teenage grandson and therefore we found early hours visits to the downstairs facilities a little testing!
We greatly enjoyed or visit to your very special house and hope that we have the opportunity to come again.
