Large 6-bedroom chalet close to ski lifts.
The Mountain House is a large, beautifully appointed chalet located in a quiet road 50m from a nursery slope and 800m from Les Contamines' main ski lifts. It has 6 bedrooms and beds for 14 people so it is perfect for two to three families, or large groups of friends. The free shuttle bus to the ski lifts stops 100m from the Mountain House and if the snow is good you can ski directly back to the chalet via an off-piste track.
Les Contamines is fantastic for skiing and boarding. It has 120km of pistes catering for all abilities and lots of accessible and fun off-piste between the pistes. Its snow record is the best in the Chamonix valley and the ski domain has stunning views of Mont Blanc. Yet compared to better known ski resorts is it never crowded.
The Mountain House is also a wonderful summer venue. It is in a beautiful location and has a large sunny garden (950m2) with stunning views of the Mont Blanc Massif. There's a 10-seater table and chairs on the south-facing sun terrace, plenty of sun loungers and smaller tables and chairs in the garden, and a large Weber gas barbecue that can cater for up to 12 people.
Summer activities in Les Contamines include walking & hiking, lake swimming, road biking, mountain biking, climbing (La Duchere rock-face is only 2km away with more than 100 bolted climbs, 3a to 7c), tennis on high quality courts, a golf-driving range, archery, paragliding, mule treks etc. It's also very well-suited for young children and we can say that with confidence as we've been bringing all three of our own children here in the summers since they were babies. There's a life-guarded swimming lake with a very gently sloping artificial beach and a small slide, kids play areas, donkey rides, padalos and other boats to hire, parcour des arbres, which is where children or adults clip in and climb around a circuit in the trees etc. Please get in touch for more information.
The Mountain House is furnished it to a very high standard to provide a luxurious setting for a perfect alpine holiday. All the furniture, beds, mattresses, bedding, kitchen equipment, appliances etc were bought new for the 2017 season as we bought the chalet unfurnished. In the main room this includes:
* A beautiful 3m x 1m solid oak 12-seater dining table and chairs;
* A large comfortable corner sofa and two armchairs;
* Lots of new cushions and soft warm throws;
* A magnificent large antler chandelier (deer shed their antlers annually, none were killed!);
* A beautiful reclaimed-elm dresser;
* A 49 inch 4K Sony smart TV;
* Bluetooth enabled Onkyo amp connected to floor-standing KEF speakers;
* Several tripod lamps and other large lamps;
* A brass telescope to make the most of the views of the of the mountains, forests, village and stars.
The beds, mattresses, duvets, and pillows are all new. All duvets and pillows are 100% goose down and feather and all the bed linen is crisp white 100% percale cotton. Three of the bedrooms have either super king or king size beds; one has bunk beds plus two additional singles; one has bunk beds plus one additional single; and the 6th bedroom has one single bed. This 6th bedroom is a small room but it has a large window, plenty of shelves, a bedside table and lamp and a comfortable new bed and mattress. All the bedrooms have Cambridge Audio Bluetooth speakers.
In October 2017 we had a beautiful new kitchen fitted with solid oak worktops and Bosch appliances throughout including two separate full size ovens and a large gas hob. There’s also a large fridge-freezer, a Dualit coffee machine, a 6-slice Dualit toaster, a food processor, microwave, raclette machine and everything you need for preparing, cooking and serving large group meals in style.
There is a large double garage that can comfortably take a car and leave plenty of room for skiing and boarding equipment, and in addition there is outside parking for 2 more cars. The Mountain House has a large capacity Samsung washing machine, a large capacity Bosch drier, and an air-blown 24-boot boot drier.
Children are very welcome. The Mountain House has three cots and three high chairs.
This listing is for the main chalet which comprises two-thirds of a very large (320m2) building that also includes a self-contained two-bedroom apartment and a self-contained one-bedroom apartment. The building was designed by an architect as his family home and has always included these self-contained apartments. As such the spaces flow very nicely and when in the main chalet you are unaware of the apartments, which are separated by thick concrete walls. This listing also includes sole use of the garden and garage.
You enter the chalet on the middle floor, which includes a large main room with a double-height ceiling. Two of the six bedrooms (one with a super king bed and one with bunks plus two singles) are upstairs, and four are downstairs from this middle floor. This separation of sleeping spaces works really well for two families, offering each their separate space and privacy. In addition to the 6 bedrooms which provide beds for 14 people, there is a sofa-bed that folds out in to a double bed in the living room.
There is a large shower room and WC upstairs, and two bathrooms (one en-suite) plus a separate WC downstairs. On the middle floor (the living area) there is also a separate WC.

About Bob Saynor
I first came to Les Contamines in 1999, introduced by a French Friend who had grown up here. I fell in love with the place for its atmosphere, charm and great skiing & boarding, particularly all the easily accessible off-piste. I bought an apartment in Les Contamines in 2004 and spent most of the next 5 winters there. We now have three children - two boys 8 and 6 years old, and a 2 year old girl - so full seasons in Contamines are a thing of the past but as a family we've spent lots of wonderful time here in the summer and more recently as the boys are now a bit older we're loving skiing as a family.
Bob Saynor purchased this Chalet in 2016
Why Bob Saynor chose Les Contamines-Montjoie
The Mountain House is a beautiful building with amazing views and a lot of character and charm. It was designed by an architect as his family home and this shows in the meticulous attention to detail of its design and construction. The unusually large south-facing windows flood the chalet with light, give great views of the mountains, and also provide a south-facing terrace that is sheltered from the wind on 3 sides.
What makes this Chalet unique
The Mountain House is a large 6-bedroom chalet in a fantastic location that has just (December 2016) been completely re-furnished to a very high standard. It's a lovely place to relax in or to return to after a day on the slopes or in the hills. The Mountain House is a three-story building with some of the bedrooms on the top floor and some on the ground floor. This separation of sleeping spaces gives a lot of flexibility and works really well if two families are sharing the chalet as each can have their own space and privacy.

What a fantastic place! Highly recommended
Fabulous venue for Ski Holiday with two families
We were two families with children 9,12,14,16 and 5 adults staying at the Mountain House.
We chose Contamines partly due to the short transfer time from Geneva airport.
We all had a fabulous time: the property was spacious enough for everyone to spread out and have privacy but also to come together in the lovely central space for meals and evening games.
The house is very well appointed with everything you need (hairdryers, washing machine, tumble dryers, ski boot dryer) but also some nice touches you didn't know you needed (bluetooth speakers in the bedrooms, a great sounding hi-fi in the main area, a HiDef Smart TV , coffee maker and lovely throws on the beds).
We used Thierry's Intersport Ski Rental in the Village on Bob's recommendation and got really helpful service and were also delighted with the recommendations on ski instruction we got too - the kids really liked their instructor and made good progress.
We had one day of poor weather but everyone was more than happy to chill out in the property and really relax.
The supermarket at the foot of the slopes had everything we needed and we enjoyed eating out at the friendly restaurant just 25 metres from the property.
Definitely our favourite ski accommodation. Thank you Bob!
Fantastic Chalet: Clean, big, full of character
We were a group of twelve staying for one week in this superb chalet! When we arrived, we found it to be very clean and ready to go. This place immediately impressed everyone with its spaciousness and character. It feels the way a chalet should with lots of wood and a vaulted ceiling in the dining room/lounge area. A nice touch was the wine on arrival, a great way to welcome a new group. We noted that the accommodation looked exactly how it had been presented in the photos on the website. The description was very accurate. My favourite piece of furniture was the massive wooden dining room table that accommodates a group of 14. After dinner the lounge area was super comfortable with big sofas and a big screen TV. The kitchen is a nice size and has room enough for a table that sits six or seven comfortably. The appliances are all newer and function well. It was a fun place to cook a meal with others. There is ample tableware and we never felt short of mugs or glasses, plates or bowls. We really liked the fact that tea, coffee, herbs, and spices were all on hand at the chalet, which made things that much easier and felt very friendly. The bedrooms were all clean and comfortable with great linen! I had slept great with the comfy pillow and duvet. There were easily enough bathrooms for all of us and, as with the kitchen, the extra added touch of toiletries being provided was very convenient and thoughtful. The ski resort and lifts are a short fifteen minute walk down the road and, if we timed it right, we could catch a free ride on a ski bus coming from the center of town. The skiing itself was excellent and is rarely crowded like some of the bigger places in the Alps. At times we felt like we had the upper slopes all to ourselves. The owner of the property was friendly, reliable and a good communicator. I would enthusiastically recommend this place to friends and family, no hesitation. For those that don’t ski, I imagine this would be a fantastic place to be in the summer months in the mountains.
Peefect house and location
This house beautifully designed and located in one of the most picturesque villages Ive ever seen.
Very close to skiresorts and nursery slopes.
Great for large goups or famillies. Bars shops amenities all within easy reach.
Another great stay at the Mountain House
This was my second time at the Mountain House and I'll certainly be back again! The chalet is beautifully furnished, really well equipped and in a great location. Les Contamines is a lovely resort, not too busy and there was plenty of snow!
This is the third time I have stayed at the chalet and it is even better now, the new kitchen is great. Five stars.
