The Coolest Flat
We have stayed here two times and it's GREAT. The flat is cozy, but has everything you'd need and it has a nice Gezellig vibe. The furnishings are unique and the bed is comfy. The alley where it is located is close to the Dam, but just enough off to be relatively quiet. The owner is very responsive to questions and super friendly. Highly recommended!
This is a lovely studio apartment in an excellent location. The building itself was having work done to it while we were there so there was a lot of paint pots and tools, and scaffolding over half the windows. There was also a very hazardous staircase that's an accident waiting to happen and no working lights in the communal areas.
The studio itself was very nice, well decorated in a modern-industrial style. A good size for Amsterdam and with all the amenities you'd need for a short stay.
Unfortunately we had a lot of trouble communicating with the host, with multiple messages going unanswered. After getting no reply we literally just went to the property at the check-in time and waited hopefully. The cleaner happened to come out so we weren't waiting long, but it was definitely making us anxious that we had not heard anything and couldn't contact the host.
Finally after checkout some of our deposit was withheld to cover city tax, despite us already paying it when booking. This was resolved pretty quickly by homeaway but it was a hassle and left a bad taste.
Also thought that a 5pm check-in was very late.
Ralf's property was fantastic, the location was extremely central, and the amenities were great. Would highly recommend both Ralf as a host, and this property for anyone visiting Amsterdam.
Beware of Check in Policy
Contacted the owner when our flight was delayed by 1 hour, this meant an 8pm check in (instead of 7pm). Was greated with an extremely large late fee. Never booked a place with such a narrow checkin time 5-7pm?????
Economical place to stay but a few things to note
The studio is large and has a very large table which handy if you like to spread out. The kitchen has everything you would need and all is working properly. Big bonus is the washer and dryer! Wifi was fast. An excellent reading lamp is in the room. Bed was quite comfortable. I was there during a major heat wave and they were kind enough to bring me a fan : -)
Things to note:
I had great trouble communicating with the host and assistant post when I checked in. Host had trouble with the SIM card and co-host forgot to charge her phone. This made me quite anxious.
The key to the room did not come out of the lock once I was in the room and I had to wait until midnight until this was resolved.
(I felt it necessary that the key should lock the front door since I was traveling by myself.) During the rest of my stay I was provided with a screwdriver to un-loosen the key lock each time it got stuck.
There was no sign-in guest book or gifts from the host. This is not a big deal but this was the first time I had experienced this from a host.
It would be a plus if the host would provide an information booklet like most hosts do which inform the guest of how to operate items in the room, or how to check out. A picture of where to leave the key when checking out would be helpful as well as details of the location such as "by the front door of the building or the third floor."
Some lights did not work: in the bedroom portion and over the kitchen counter.
But all in all, this place is very good if you are on a budget as the prices in Amsterdam are quite high. Street noise is minimal, and you will be close to everything.
