Casa Elena is a sumptuous modern villa which looks onto the Obidos Lagoon Nature Reserve, itself a short hop from spectacular blue flag Foz do Arelho beach. This spacious house has 5 bedrooms, including one in its basement apartment which also has its own sitting room, bathroom, TV and cooking facilities. On the ground floor, the villa has a large dining-room/sitting room which opens directly onto the pool area with its lovely lagoon views, a fully equipped kitchen, a TV room and a laundry room. There are four bright bedrooms on the top floor, of which the master bedroom has an en-suite. There are a further two shower rooms. The upstairs balcony is a great spot from which to watch the sun go down!
Near the pool there is a barbecue area which also has a pizza oven and a covered area for those who want some shade – you can also roll down the awnings in front of the sitting-room.
You can park your car away from the summer sun in the underground garage where you will also find four bikes for your use. While you are inside there are plenty of family DVDs and games. You are welcome to take the bikes for a ride along the shore.
Casa Elena is a two-minute walk from the shore of the lagoon where you can swim, or wade with the locals looking for shellfish, or join the flamingos for a stroll in the shallows (it might be a bit chilly if you are used to the Med)! A ten-minute walk will take you to the centre of this friendly village where there are grocers, bakers, an excellent butcher, a pharmacy etc. A stone’s throw further lies the Atlantic coast where you can eat delicious fresh fish in any of several reasonably priced local restaurants. The views from these onto the cliffs across the lagoon are glorious, particularly at sunset.
The town of Caldas da Rainha has hypermarkets, a shopping centre, a cinema showing films in English, a lovely park where you can hire a rowing-boat and a fish and a fruit market, both bursting with cheap, fresh local produce. It's only a fifteen-minute drive away.
Foz is a great place for all sorts of sorts of water sports and you can sample many of them at the local sailing school. But pride of place on the Silver Coast must go to surfing, and there is a friendly local surf school which can arrange a great experience for all the family. It’s not as hard as it looks!
Further afield, a short drive will take you to the charm of the walled town of Obidos (one of UNESCO's first world heritage sites) and its summer festival celebrating its medieval heritage, or to several top-class golf courses. Just up the coast is the town of Sao Martinho with its glorious, almost circular beach where you can enjoy a calm sea without the Atlantic surf. Beyond is the old fishing town of Nazaré, famed for its monstrous winter waves. To the north and the south stretches a beautiful coast where in many places you can walk for miles along quiet, sandy, cliff-lined beaches.
And only an hour away you can visit cosmopolitan Lisbon with its fabulous old town and pastelarias where you can eat delicious cakes.
NB Casa Elena has plenty of outdoor furniture. Most of it doesn't appear in these photos because they were taken in late autumn when the furniture had been taken into the garage for the winter.

About Ian Howie
We are a British/German family with four children between the ages of 14 and 23. Ian left a career in investment management and now, like Francine, is a pupil support worker. We enjoy travelling and speak several languages between us: English, German, French and intermediate Spanish.
Ian Howie purchased this Villa in 2016
Why Ian Howie chose Foz do Arelho
We loved the location by the sea - both the peaceful waters of the lagoon and the wild Atlantic surf a little beyond - and the tranquility of the house and its modern, clean lay-out. It is in a perfect position to stroll to the town centre shops and to the seafront with its restaurants and lovely views. We had been thinking about buying a second home somewhere for years but couldn't decide on the location. We had visited the Silver Coast a few years before on a surfing holiday with Ian's cousin who was a surfing instructor in nearby surf hot-spot Peniche. The area was one of our favourite potential locations. We loved the beautiful coastline, the friendly people, the low cost of living and the fact that this area is one of the few on the southern European coast which hasn't been over developed. Then, in quick succession, friends of ours bought a property a little to the north of Foz do Arelho, and Ian's surfing cousin became an estate agent in the area. We decided that this was a sign that the Silver Coast was the place for us and the time to buy was now. On our second property viewing trip, after seeing a lot of villas that were, frankly, disappointing, we came to Casa Elena and we knew almost immediately that this was what we wanted. The house passed all of our subsequent checks with flying colours and in September 2016 we bought it.

Beautiful home in an amazing location near a superb beach
We booked this villa which looks good on the website, however we were pleasantly surprised when we entered the villa which was much much better in reality than shown on the website. The lounge/dinning room is a lot bigger than shown and the views from the large window is just breathtaking. One evening we watched the sun set just picturesque. The nearby beach is not overcrowded and mainly locals, so very authentic Portuguese feel about it. All the restaurants we tried nearby served tasty food. We didn't have a car but managed with the buses and taking taxis, however next time we visit I think I will definitely hire a car. Overall a very enjoyable stay at this lovely modern villa that's so well equipped. Will most certainly stay there again.
Spacious, modern, well appointed villa with amazing views
We shared Casa Elena with another family, all with older teenagers. The house was very spacious and accommodated our group very easily, with plenty of space to spare, and plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone to be comfortable and at ease.
We found the house easy to use whilst also very chic. We felt at home and could relax immediately.
The outdoor space was very nice too, with large BBQs, and enough garden and pool furniture for everyone. There was plenty of inflatables to have fun with in the pool, and bicycles for those that wanted. The cul-de-sac in which Casa Elana is felt very safe.
The views from the main garden area, living area, and 3 of the bedrooms over the lagoon are simply amazing.
Everything was as per the pictures.
The area is lovely too. Foz itself has a good choice of restaurants along the sea/Laguna front ( we had dinner at Marisol 3 nights out of 7... you must have the pulpo and the large cockles cooked with garlic and butter , together width the homemade round chips), and an amazing jazz-themed bar in the centre of the village where they serve a very nice cocktail!
10 min drive away is Caldas, with a superb daily fruit and vegetable market, where you find great quality local produce very cheap. There is also a good Leclerc for all groceries.
We visited Nazare (biggest wave in the world, also nice fort/lighthouse well worth the €1.50 to get in), Peniche (good beaches to go in the sea), Obidos (make sure you have good shoes to be able to do the walk round to top of the fortified walls) - all within 40 min drive. Also went to Sintra (1hr away) on a day with less good weather which turned out to be a good call as it would have been a bit hot otherwise!
The whole Atlantic coast in Portugal is very windy and Foz is no exception. However it is very beautiful and the people are so friendly.
Ian, the owner, was very helpful with everything from beginning to end.
I'd definitely recommend staying at Casa Elena for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful and quiet part of Southern Europe.
Beautiful house and a beautiful place. The matrasses could have been softer.
Very Nice place and house.
Home from Home
We cannot fault this beautiful villa. It has everything you need for the perfect family holiday. Walking distance to amazing beach, several restaurants & bars. It's so good we're coming back next year!!!
Thank you Ian for making the booking so easy & all your helpful info
Thanks for your kind words, Maggie. Its great to know that you will be coming back to Casa Elena next year.
We had a wonderful short vacation at Casa Elena. The house is big, much bigger than shown in the pictures and it can easily accomodate 10-12 guests. The views over the ria of Foz do Arelho are stunning so even though the beach is just 1 km away you feel like staying the whole day by the pool enjoying the barbecue and the sun. It is also located in a very quiet area, so sleep is guaranteed. The house has all equipment you may need for a holiday, even beach towels. Ian is an extremely helpful landlord: we had a small issue turning on the heating and he worked through the problem until it was finally solved.
We will definitely come back to Casa Elena for another great stay.
