Between rivers and mountains, the city of Covilha is one of the gateways to the Estrela Mountain.

Land of origin Lusitanian shepherds, it was taken from the Moors by King D. Sancho I who protected it with walls and thus became a strategic point in the Middle Ages, especially with King D. Dinis, when it implemented the reinforcement of the territory.

This royal city, title granted by D. Manuel, who gave him the new 'Foral' in 1510, was also a land of discoverers. The Infante D. Henrique the Navigator, received from his father, King D. João I, Title Senhor Covilha, having conquered Ceuta in 1415.

Here born Pêro da Covilhã, explorer that King D. João II sent in the East and whose information went just over the discovery of the maritime route to India by Vasco da Gama.

A mandatory references in Covilha is the art of wool, also launched in the time of D. Sancho I and developed by the Jewish community that settled since that time and remained until the fifteenth century. The textile industry, which produced all the uniforms of the Portuguese army during the reign of D. João V, took a new impetus in 1763 under the action of Pombal Marquis who founded here the 'Real Fábrica de Panos', became the largest center of woolen nationwide. Economic growth in profit made in 1870 Covilha rose to the rank of town.

A visit to the Heritage does not release the old Jewish Quarter, with its narrow streets and Manueline windows, the Chapel of São Martinho, the Chapel of Santa Cruz and the Museum of woollens.
