About Norma Williams
We were retired ! We 'fell' into our holiday rental business by accident. It started as a hobby after someone pleaded with us to rent them our house in San Mamiliano, while we were away. We now have 2 major partners and between us, we offer up to 50 very diverse and beautiful villas, apartments and pool properties, both in central Spoleto and close by. However, we still do not regard ourselves as 'proper business people' because we care far more about contributing to making our guests' holidays fantastic than we do about making money. We hope you stay with us !
Norma Williams purchased this Farmhouse in 2007
Why Norma Williams chose Spoleto
Our small partnership group, ourselves included, own all the properties that we advertise, about 60 in all, from villas with pools to smart town houses to central city apartments. Subsequently, we can organise olive oil tasting, wine tasting, chef at home, eating in chef's house, truffle hunting, picnics with a donkey, cheese making, caving, canyoning, rafting, canoeing, horse you at better rates than you get going through the conventional channels. This is because all the aforementioned activities, except for horse-riding, are offered by our partners to ensure you have the holiday of a lifetime ! For instance, the olive oil of one of our partners (Ciarletti) was blessed by the Pope 2 years ago, after it had won the top prize in Italy. He, amongst other of our partners, offers olive oil tasting, accompanied by a lunch, at his farmhouse. All our activities are totally authentic, put on by Italians, whose familes go back for centuries and who have been in the truffle, olive oil and wine trade for all of that time. And, because all the activities we offer are "inhouse" we can undercut all the "professional" businesses, for whom it is their livelihood. Such activities are not our livelihood. Neither are they the livelihood of our partners. We and our partners offer these activities with the aim of enriching your holiday.

Tranquility in the mountains
Villa Marianna is in a beautiful, peaceful location in the mountains near Spoleto. It is quite remote, so a car is vital - and the nearest town and restaurants are a considerable drive - but if it is peace and quiet you are searching for, then this is the ideal retreat.
Our apartment was really well equipped and there was nothing we required for cooking etc that was not provided. At one point our shower flooded, but a plumber was organised straight away and the problem was solved easily. There is no air conditioning, which did concern me a little, however, the stone construction and location against the mountain ensured that our apartment was never too hot but stayed lovely and cool, even when the temperature in the sun reached the mid 30s. Lovely!
The pool is a good size and there are a few sun loungers and a little play area for children, which our one year old loved. However, as the pool was unheated, it was unbearably cold, even in July, and there was a lot of dog poo in the play area. We were happy to ignore the sheep and dog poo on the paths etc, as this is a working farm with sheep grazing, but it would be good if they were kept away from this play area if possible.
I communicated with Norma whilst planning the holiday, and she was helpful and always happy to answer our questions. Whilst away, Laurie (a lovely chap!) dealt with all our queries and organised the activities for us. We went truffle hunting and my parents went on the olive oil experience. These were both fantastic - such unique experiences with absolutely delicious food, and a rare opportunity to see behind the scenes with people so passionate about what they do. Although it was quite a physically demanding walk through the woods, we even took our one year old truffle hunting and were accommodated well.
Overall, we had a delightful stay in Umbria and would highly recommend staying at one of Norma and Laurie's properties. In fact, my parents are already looking at returning, perhaps in the Autumn!
The Villa Marianna pool is primarily a fresh water pool, fed by underground streams. It has some local authority water to keep it topped up but it is essentially fresh water, constantly replenished. For this reason, together with the fact that the Villa Marianna pool is larger than your usual holiday pool, and, because Villa Marianna is in the mountains, just below snow level, the water is probably colder than the average holiday pool. However, this is the 1st time ever, in 12 years of renting this property that the temperature of the water has been commented on.
As for the dog poo in the play area, our reviewer is quite right that it was from our sheep dogs. However, the play area is fenced off so that neither the sheep nor the dogs can access this area. Unfortunately, one of our guests left the gate open and the sheep and the dogs wandered in. Our shepherd is a man who lives outdoors in a hut. This is his chosen way of life ! The difficulty here is that he wouldn't have noticed the dog poo in this area, animal poo being an indigenous part of his life. That together with a temperature in the late 30s C, means that animal poo quickly dries up and disappears. Nonetheless, I wouldn't have liked my one year old to have come across it. So, for this, we are very sorry ! And, I would urge all holiday makers to respect the country code by always shutting gates behind them to avoid this kind of occurrence.
a week in Villa Marianna
We have just spent one week in Villa Marianna (end of April - beginning of May 2013). The house is very comfortable, apartments well equipped and the location really beautiful. It is quite remote but this is what we wanted and so we liked it. The host - Laurie is a nice and helpful person.
Our companion occupied apt. E, apt. D and apt. A. The other 2 apartments remained empty so, in theory, we had the house for ourselves.....Well: almost for ourselves.
On the 2nd night of our stay we found out that, apart from the 5 apartments, there was also a kind of restaurant in the same building located beneath the ground floor. From time to time people come here to have a family reunion or other type of parties. During our stay (7 days) there were 2 dinners and 1 long lasting lunch and on all the 3 occasions it was really loud and the whole area became more similar to a "piazza " in a nice italian town rather than to a quiet agriturismo we had hoped for. There was no information about this restaurant on the web page when we were making our reservation and this is why we were really disappointed.
To compensate us for this bad surprise Laurie invited us to one of the dinners. It was very nice of him and we do appreciate it, especially that the food was really good. However the fact stays the fact: nobody told us about the restaurant in the premises when we made our enquiry about the rental and we decided to stay in this property far away from any town because we wanted to have a quite place with no parties!
To summarize: we would love our stay in Villa Marianna if it had not been disturbed 3 times by the restaurant guests. We would consider coming back, preferably in a summer time, if we were sure that the restaurant would be closed. Otherwise we would rather look for a different place.
SINCE OUR REVIEWER WROTE THIS REVIEW, WE HAVE CLOSED THE RESTAURANT.
NOW, THERE IS NO RESTAURANT OPERATING AT VILLA MARIANNA WHEN THE APARTMENTS ARE BOOKED SEPARATELY.
HOWEVER, WHEN A PARTY OF OVER 25 OR SO BOOK ALL 5 APARTMENTS SIMULTANEOUSLY IE THE WHOLE OF VILLA MARIANNA, WE PERMIT THE GROUP TO USE THE RESTAURANT FACILITIES (USUALLY LOCKED UP), WHICH INCLUDES AN INDUSTRIAL KITCHEN AND SEATING FOR UP TO 100 PERSONS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE.
Perfect Home Base
We used this beautiful villa as a home base while we explored Umbria and Tuscanny. While at the Villa we were able to relax poolside or on the patio and enjoy the incredible views. Boy, can Leonardo cook. Relax and let him do all the work, we had a great dinner. We have friends planning a family reunion and have recommended they contact Norma to plan a fabulous vacation.
Our reviewer said that next time, her party would like to occupy the whole house. Villa Marianna contains 5 self-catering apartments. The largest is APT A with a stunning terrace and the smallest is APT E with a fantastic patio area. Our reviewer stayed in APTs B, C + D.
Villa Marianna also has its own "cucina contadino" and a private chef, who prepares lunches and dinners (with unlimited top quality house wine!), by order, in the sensationally beautiful grounds for all our guests and at incredibly reasonable rates.
And, we now have our own animals in the adjacent field eg pygmy ponies and hens for the children to play with.
I translated this review, using Babelfish :
During the summer of 2009, a group of 17 of us spent 2 weeks in 3 of the apartments in Villa Marianna-Manor House. Everything was beautiful : the drive through the mountains to Villa Marianna was easy and the landscape all around, from beginning to end, was beautiful.
Once we arrived at Villa Marianna, we never wanted to leave. We loved the magnificent views that disappeared into the distance. We enjoyed breakfasts each day al fresco. We loved the very large and clean pool.
All the apartments were well equipped. However, if we asked for anything in addition, it was supplied instantly by Norma or Laurie, who are both very, very nice.
We hope to return to Villa Marianna one day. And, then, we are hoping to rent the whole house.
Villa Marianna, Belgian visitors july 2009
We (group of 13 people) have rented Villa Marianna , apts B,C and D for 14 days in July 2009. We have had the most fabulous holiday. The description of the Villa appears to be as mentioned on the web : the apts are large enough for the nr of people indicated, the villa has indeed recently been renovated, it is clean and more then sufficiently equipped for 6 people per apt.. Our hosts Laurie and Norma are the most charming people, not obtrusive but there, if you should need them. The view from the terras could easily come out of a movie. We could witness the most beautiful sun dawn every night again. The Swimming pool could perhaps be a little bit difficult to reach for people with a handicap as it is situated +/- 50 m below the villa and requires a small climb when returning, but is also extremely well equipped with chairs and was during our stay, maintained every day. There are indeed a lot of places to visit in the neighbourhood and even a visit to Roma by train belongs to the possibilities.
I can give only one advice : don't think twice, book !
Geert and company
It is true that it takes a few minutes to walk up the path back to Villa Marianna. This is because the pool is part of a larger campus area with gazebos on a large sandy "beach", equipped with swings, a climbing frame and a slide for young children. However, those of you who have mobility problems or who are staying at Vista Del Mondo, please note that you can drive directly to the pool. And, there are toilet facilities next to the pool !
A romantic, mountain retreat, where there is so much space that guests can do what they like, without feeling inhibited. Quiet nooks and crannies for lovers, wide open sandy areas for children, spacious patio areas for dining alfresco, endless pilgrim trails for walkers and cyclists, heavenly views, bird-song, a huge pool for family gatherings, local restaurants and, proximity to the Umbrian 'hot-spots' ....Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, Spello, Casteluccio, Norcia, Trevi, Montefalco, all within a 30 min - 1 hour drive; and, Rome, a mere 1.15 mins by train or car from Spoleto, just 7 miles away, via the quiet Giro D'Italia route, a spectacularly beautiful country road. And, while exploring Umbria is a must for most, if you tear yourselves away from this mind-blowingly beautiful and historic villa in the hills above Bazzano, the buzzy, fairy-tale city of Spoleto will satiate a yearning for the bright lights with shops, bars, restaurants and churches, amidst its arched, cobbled streets.
Other Activities: Wine-tasting, truffle trails, antiquing, olive oil tasting, museums, churches
