Le Petit Coindries Cottage (2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4/6)
Built in the early 1800’s. Les Coindries is a traditional French farmstead with an individual two bedroom cottage and three 1-2 bedroom gites, built around a large courtyard typical of the region. The stone buildings with their tiled roofs are set in private walled garden accessed down a quiet lane and surrounded by rolling arable land, with lovely walks and cycle tracks nearby. The buildings have been carefully restored and converted to include the original oak beams and log burners. The cottage has a private patio/BBQ area and the gites have their own outside seating/eating area where you can enjoy a refreshing glass of wine after a busy day exploring the uncrowded and beautiful place. There is also a large gazebo seating space that can accommodate up to 14 people for al fresco dinning. The swimming pool is located in its own private area, with changing room and outside solar shower. A separate car park is available for guests use.
This area is perhaps the most characteristically French, of all the regions with its numerous chateaux, rolling vineyards and meandering rivers. The important but little known stunning Abbey at Fontevraud which contains the tombs of Henry II and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son Richard the Lion Heart is only a pleasant 30 minutes drive away. For more up-to-date entertainment, ‘Futuroscope’ is about 25km and the superlative zoo at Doue La Fointaine is well worth a visit.
Les Coindries can be found 11km south of Richelieu famous for it’s Cardinal of the same name the most powerful man in France during the reign of Louis XIII. The Cardinal spent his early life at the beautiful (though now partly ruined) Chateaux de Coussay and later building a magnificent palace and town of Richelieu filled with Renaissance statuary, including the two slaves of Michel Angelo and masterpieces by Poussin. The great palace was later demolished, but the huge park remains as well as the moat and island on which the Cardinal first built the palace. This little known citadel is an architectural jewel of France and can be reach in 10 minutes from Les Coindries.
A further 20 minutes drive takes you to the lovely fortress town of Chinon offering outstanding examples of medieval architecture, with views over the river Vienne from the battlements that Joan of Arc would still recognise during her imprisonment. Saumur can be reached in 30 min with its fairytale recently restored castle, overlooking the Loire itself. Tours is about 1 hour away to the north, with Poitiers 45 minutes to the south both have regular flights from the UK.

We moved here in September 2016 from a very busy part of Kent where we had lived for some 35 years working and bringing up our two sons. We love the wide open spaces, historic medieval cities, chateaux and gardens of this area, all of which are within an easy drive from Le Petite Coindries. We also enjoy the peace and quiet and wildlife the area has to offer, not to mention the many restaurants and vineyards.

Paradiesisches Landgut, wundervolle Gastgeber
Unsere beiden Kinder bzw.
Thank you for your review. We enjoyed having you all to stay and are pleased you found Les Coindries a tranquil and peaceful setting for your holiday. The swimming pool area is a nice place to relax and chill out on hot sunny days. We agree there is a lot to see and do, including walking, cycling and visiting historic towns and chateau, as well as restaurants offering good food and wine. We hope to see you all again soon.
Beautiful cottage, warm welcome and wonderful hosts
We stayed at Les Coindries for 1 week in August. Robert and Claire were very welcoming and the cottage was homely and comfy. It was a lovely base to explore the Loire Valley and a lovely place to relax by the pool. We had a great stay here. It was also great to meet Colin the Collie!!
We greatly appreciate the feedback from our guests and look forward to seeing you again.
Great place and lovely owners
A real find and we will be sure to visit again
Glad you enjoyed your visit.
All of the gites are beautiful, the hosts Claire and Robert were very welcoming and knowledgeable about the area, the pool and the outdoor seating and eating area was lovely.
Thank you, we are pleased you had a good holiday and that you were able to relax and enjoy the garden and pool areas.
Lovely fitted out with great taste
Wonderful stay Rob and Claire make you so welcome if you want a relaxing holiday this is the place for you we can't wait to go back
Les Coindries is a great place to unwind and relax, in an unhurried part of the beautiful countryside in the Loire valley. The aim is to create a home from home.
A lovely place to stay in the French countryside
Stayed in La Pressoir gite. The gite has a lovely deco and I especially loved the mezzanine bedroom. The gite opens out on to a lovely little courtyard where we enjoyed alfresco dining under the stars!
Highly recommended place to stay to explore the Loire and Vienne areas of France
Thank you Rob and Claire for being great hosts
Thank you for your review. Its nice to have the opportunity to enjoying eating alfresco on a lovely warm evening. With no light pollution here in the countryside you are able to see the abundance of stars the night sky, especially when you can see the 'milky way'.
Nearest seaside resort is La Rochelle about 2 hours away. The beaches on Ile de Re are beautiful and it is a well-sought-after resort for the French in summer.
Poitiers airport is 45 mins away with Tours airport being about an hour. Eurostar and TGV to Poitiers. Limoges and Nantes are 2 hours. Use of a car is recommended in this area.
The nearest village is 10 minutes walk (3 mins by car) with a boulangerie, epicerie and bar/restaurant. Richelieu is 10 mins by car and the charming town of Chinon is a leisurely 30 minutes drive through rolling hills and vineyards. The famous Fontevraud Abbey and Futuroscope are 30km away, and many wonderful chateaux are within a radius of 15 km.
Richelieu our local town, is a wonderful example of an unspoilt and largely original medieval walled city of great charm and character. The main square recently redeveloped and restored to its original 15th century style, features cafes, bars and shops. Banks and restaurants are down the little streets which lead to hidden properties straight from the days of the Cardinal who founded his domain and built the city in the early 1600’s.
The whole area is a haven and an antidote from the stresses of modern life, with few cars and many little roads to explore it is a cyclists and walkers paradise. There are many beautiful types of woodland with defined paths and easy access and a few minutes away is a splendid nature trail build on the former railway which ran from Chatellerault to Loudon.
