About Sue Jaffer
I (Sue) am Australian, but lived in England for nearly 20 years. My husband Nick is English, originally from Derbyshire, and his brother and sisters still live in the UK. We brought our children, James and Rachel, up in a village in the Chilterns. Today we live in Melbourne, Australia but come to UK frequently, to see family and because of Nick's academic work at Oxford.
Sue Jaffer purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Sue Jaffer chose Wirksworth
We think Acacia Cottage is special - quiet, very well appointed and with wonderful views from every window. The Peak District is a magical place, with lots of history and spectacular scenery. Whatever you like doing - eating, walking, cycling, shopping, driving around - the area can cater for you. We are close to the Southern end of the Peak District rail trail - you can hire cycles at Middleton Top - and less than one hour's drive to the High Peak with its caves and mountains. Wirksworth, Cromford and Ashbourne have good restaurants. Matlock Bath and Matlock are within 15 minutes drive. For children there are the attractions at Abraham's Heights, Carsington Water and - not too far away - Alton Towers. If you like stately homes, we are close to Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. There are many gardens you can visit, including Lea Rhododendrum Gardens just across the valley. The local train line is easy to get to, about 20 minutes into Derby (with free parking at the station). If you like history, the museum of Arkwright's Mill at Cromford is a must. Canal walks are also a local feature, from Cromford.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our cottage is the ideal base for a relaxing holiday. Blossoms in spring, wonderful colours in autumn, rural views all year round. Local walks to Black Rocks are lovely, and Wirksworth is a charming town with a thriving hobby railway. Bolehill is on the edge of the Peak District, with Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Alton Towers, the High Peak and Bakewell all within easy driving distance. There are good local restaurants in Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth, with many gastro pubs a short drive away.

Absolutely gorgeous cottage retreat
What an absolute gem. The cottage was stunning and so well equipped. Lots of added extras which meant so much. Really felt like home from home. Plenty of space, amazing kitchen and bathrooms, very clean and we all loved our stay. The views from the cottage are amazing and we loved the conservatory. Will definitely return - an amazing retreat.
Beautiful property with brilliant views. Had all amenities that you could possibly need with a fantastic conservatory. The caretaker was very easy to deal with and provided a new cot when we found the old one was broken! Had a wonderful holiday and would definitely recommend to others.
A lovely cottage with great rooms and views
The weather changed a lot this weekend and was very chilly at night. Our stay would have been perfect if the heating came on and the towel rails were working. The tap in the kitchen is dripping.
I am very sorry about the heating. I know the sunroom thermostat was not working so we have been waiting for the plumber to fit a replacement, which will hopefully be done today. Sorry it wasn't done in time for your stay but we did leave a heater in that room. I will get the plumber to maker sure all the radiators are working. Do ring Jane if you encounter a problem as we are very happy to call out a plumber if something is not working.
Location exceeded expectations
We had a wonderful break and soon relaxed in the comfort of the cottage. The views from the cottage are amazing and we were lucky enough to have some sunshine to enjoy sitting on the lovely terrace in the peaceful and quiet surroundings.
We enjoyed the many walks from the house and was in awe of the amazing wildflowers in the fields and hedgerows. We also made use of the local train back to Wirksworth having walked to Shottle. Cost £5pp and well worth supporting.
We would stay at the cottage again for the 3 of us as the sitting room is very small. The conservatory was lovely to st in during daylight hours and if there were a couple of table lamps to create some softer warm lighting we would have made use of it in the evening. We did place one of the dining area table lamps in the sitting room and had the wood burner going to make it feel more cosy in the evening.
There was plenty of hot water for showers and the upstairs was lovely and warm. Although some new replacement bed pillows would be welcomed the beds were comfortable.
Thank you for alerting us on the pillows. We will get some new ones. So glad you had some sunshine and that you enjoyed your stay.
Family Get Together at Acer Cottage
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The location was excellent with numerous historic attractions and places to visit within a short drive as well as picturesque local walks from the cottage. The cottage was also lovely and spacious and in excellent decorative order with wonderful views over the valley from the patio. Will definitely stay again when we return to the area.
Beautiful cottage with wonderful views. The accomodation has everything you could need for a pleasant stay. The beds were very clean and comfortable and the conservatory an added bonus especially as we had some beautiful weather while we were there.
Only one small critism.......we think the cleaner may have missed the kitchen that day. We found a dirty frying pan, a really dirty plate and a toaster in need of a clean in the cupboards. Also dirty trays in the oven (which could do with a deep clean) Also my grandson found a packet of headache tablets in his room but luckily he is old enough and passed them on to his mother for disposal........ BUT overall a lovely property
Sorry about the dirty pan and plate in the cupboard! Our caretaker Jane normally does a good job, but she must have missed those (and the paracetamol). So thank you for pointing them out. I am very glad you enjoyed your stay, and that you had some lovely weather, best wishes Sue
Alton Towers, a major theme park, is about 45 mins drive away
Haddon Hall is close by, and Chatsworth House around 30 mins.
