About Janet Mathews
I am originally from a small east Texas town of San Augustine. I was raised on a ranch and was a barrel racer by the age of 9. I have a great appreciation for all animals and anything outdoors. I was a high school history and psychology teacher. I quit teaching and became a serial entrepreneur. I have been self employed for most of my adult life. It seems that I really like to sell things ( it makes me high). Some of my businesses consisted of selling imprinted sportswear to schools as well as hand painted wall murals. For the last five years, I have taught onsite CPR and First Aid to company employees and schools. I now live in Galveston, Texas and enjoy entertaining and the beauty of the Gulf Coast. My mantra for life is 'you reap what you sow' and 'don't sweat the small stuff'.
Janet Mathews purchased this Cottage in 1990
Why Janet Mathews chose Neartown
This property is in a beautiful upscale neighborhood with tree lined streets in the heart of Montrose near downtown Houston. It is artsy and hip in every way. The architecture is 1920s red brick mixed with the current new styles of urban structures. So many attractions are in walking distance such as restaurants, wine bars, coffee bars ,bakeries, antique shopping, and Allen Parkway ( a beautiful park for walking, running, biking, and dog walking). Theaters and Museums are literally 5 minuets away. The neighborhood is quiet with many long time residents walking their dogs in early mornings and late afternoon. The location of this property is so wonderful because you are always driving against the traffic and you can jump on every freeway in minuets.
What makes this Cottage unique
Location Location Location! Near all the best of Houston. Private free standing casita for lots of privacy.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Second time to stay here. Very nice in all ways. Our place to stay when in Houston.
Exactly as advertised
in its excellent location, quiet neighborhood, small but thoroughly manageable space (for two adults in one bed). In addition, the owner could not be nicer. A cautionary note: If you are anything other than Christian, the casita may not be for you. The small library and décor reflect an explicitly Christian sensibility, which was uncomfortable to both of us—especially discomfiting to the one of us who is Jewish. We respectfully suggest that either the religious ambiance be mentioned in the VRBO description or the sectarian materials removed.
Very cute place, great location
The casita is in a wonderful area, interesting houses and lots of places to visit nearby. The place itself was perfect for us, and has a warm western decor. We would stay here again.
Thanks for the great review. Enjoyed hosting you. Come back soon.
walk to the museum district
Easily walkable to all the museums one way and Westheimer shops/restos the other way. Quiet neighborhood but be smart walking at night.
The neighborhood is a great one to walk around in. We have neighborhood privately paid constables that regularly patrol the neighborhood. As in any neighborhood in an urban area you must be aware of your surroundings. Lots of people in this neighborhood work from home and constantly walk their dogs. I stay their sometime and walk my dog. I feel safe.
VERY cozy, convenient location and well kept!
Super place! Well appointed, many necessities furnished, friendly owner. Lyft or Uber rides to the Museum District, Zoo, Med Center and restaurants are ALL less than $10.00. Very comfortable furnishings, and everything works! Grocery store in walking distance. If I ever have to go to Houston on business for an extended stay, this is where I’ll be. I’ll be saving lots of money over the hotels! Thank you Janet, and thank you HomeAway!
Lovely little house in a great neighborhood.
Quite neighborhood. Convenient parking. Excellent restaurants nearby. Great value. Centrally located. Who could ask for more?
