About Alex Villa

I can't live without fresh air, my wellies and good glass of red wine - oh and it would be pretty boring without my wife, Kate and puppy, Scamp! Kate and I have a love of food and an active lifestyle.

We have recently moved to Rutland to fulfil our dream of running a small holiday let business - we love it and hope you will too.

Alex Villa purchased this barn in 2016

Why Alex Villa chose Rutland

The Hide is only 200 yards away from Rutland Water, with fantastic access to walking, riding, sailing, birdwatching, fishing as well as some fantastic countryside right on the doorstep.

What makes this barn unique

The Hide is an oak framed building which has some fantastic detail in it. This coupled with ample space, underfloor heating and a little wood burning stove make it a truly idilic place to stay. There is nothing nicer than snuggling up in front of the fire on a chilly evening or after a walk down by the water. In the summer, the large glass doors can be thrown open and the sun spills into the living room. All in it's a great place to stay come rain or shine.

I stayed a week, touring around from this ideally situated and very comfortable spot. The facilities were ideal (the bathroom is amazing), and Alex and Kate are great hosts. Highly recommended.

Great place for a quiet break.

  • 4 of 5

A lovely peaceful place to stay. The Hide is beautifully done up and felt very luxurious. Alex is very welcoming and very helpful and Scamp the dog came to visit us and 'check us out'. The only addition I would make is to add some outdoor seating so we could take advantage of the evening sun but apart from that, a great place for a break.

Perfect base for exploring

  • 5 of 5

A very warm welcome set the tone for the stay. Alex was very friendly and helpful. The accommodation was just as described on the website. Very clean and modern, warm and welcoming. The location is ideal for discovering the surrounding area. Alex told us of local inns and places to eat, as well as good places to visit. Wouldn't hesitate recommending the cottage.

Cosy getaway, perfect for two!

  • 5 of 5

We had a long weekend here to recharge our batteries. It was an hour away from Nottingham which is perfect for a short break, a nice change of scenery if you want to go south instead of to the Peak District.

Alex was very welcoming and we even got to meet Scampi, their eight months old border terrier (so cute). Being greeted with a little parcel of homemade biscuits after our long bike ride was a lovely gesture and one we thoroughly enjoyed.

The Hide was absolutely perfect for us, the bed was big and cosy with a superb outlook over a stream and the shower room was brilliant. An underfloor heated place is one of sheer luxury! The location is close to Rutland Water so is perfect if you want something to occupy you. We did a 24 mile bike ride round the reserve (a ten minute walk to get to Whitwell) and went to the nature reserve the following day.

There is a pub within two minutes walking distance and Alex recommended us some great places to eat, we cooked at The Hide though so cannot comment on these places.

We love finding new places to stay and this is one we would definitely like to come back to!

Rich and Lucy.
