This charming and convenient appartment (1st floor, no lift) offers guests the best possible experience of staying in Cortina d'Ampezzo, the 'Queen of the Dolomites.' Within easy walking distance of the town centre, the flat has 3 double bedrooms (the third bedroom is a small twin room and more suitable for children than adults - though both beds are standard single) and 2 bathrooms, large sitting and dining area, fully equipped kitchen, and two terraces offering great views of Cortina and the surrounding mountains. Cortina offers exceptional skiing, climbing, walking, shopping, spas and restaurants, and is great in both winter and summer, having been popular with the European jet-set since the 1920's.

The apartment is in easy walking distance to the centre (5 mins walk) down a tarmac path. Inside, guests will find everything they need: bedding and towels, centralised heating, microwave, fridge/freezer, coffee machine, all kitchen utensils, TV/DVD and a large collection of DVDs.

About Luca

Luca Savelli is a keen skier and has skied since he was 4 years old in Cortina.

Based in London since childhood, Luca visits Cortina 3 times a year with his friends, though otherwise works as an archaeologist, primarily in Ethiopia and Italy. He is a keen traveller, historian, polo player, and also enjoys running his estate in Tuscany .

Why Luca chose Cortina d'Ampezzo

Luca Savelli recently bought this flat having looked for the perfect place for a number of years: interior style, location, views and size were all key factors, and after seeing numerous other flats this was one of the first to have everything needed.

The interior style is an elegant Italo-Tyrolese style, with wooden pannelling through out and designed as a chalet should be: warm, cosy and aesthetically pleasing. The views are fantastic, as one can overlook the old town centre with its tall church-spire, though which is dwarfed by the soaring Dolomites behind; in fact both terraces offer excellent views of the mountains.

The location could not be better. Facing West and South, the flat enjoys sunlight all day and witnesses to the sun setting behind the Tofana Mountain Group each evening; below is a mountain stream with a small waterfall adding to the mountainous atmosphere. The house is in an elevated position, just outside the centre of Cortina in one of the town's more chic parishes known as Pecol, however, in 5 minutes one can reach the town on foot, or in 2 minutes by car.

At about 85sqm, the property is great for families and couples and has outdoor parking (snow is cleared efficiently in Cortina, and roads well gritted), and is a well managed and popular property generally. It should be noted that the third bedroom, while made up of 2 standared single beds, is on the small side (ideal for children though adults can stay too for short periods).

What makes this apartment unique

The flat enjoys a privileged position in Cortina in every way - a great location (central, but just outside the very busy centre), stunning views and is a charming yet functional property.

Cortina itself has been visited for over a century by the aristocracy, the rich and the jet-set, though shot to international fame after it hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics. Today it continues to impress all visitors with its old world charm, excellent food, well dressed people and great skiing - and is one of Europe's top resorts.

Known as the 'Queen of the Dolomites,' Cortina sits at the heart of the UNESCO site that is the Dolomite mountain range (in the Eastern Alps), known for its soaring peaks that are given their rose-gold appearance by the limestone rock they are made of.

Cortina offers so many sporting activities, such as skiing, crosscountry skiing, skating, BASE jumping, rock-climbing, mountaineering, hiking, as well as cultural activities (the Dolomites are dotted with picturesque Tyrloese villages, castles and churches as well as battlefields of the frontline between in the Italians and Austrians in WW1), and of course its world-class restaurants, offering Venetian-Tyrolese food.

Lastly, Cortina is a great base from which to visit some of Italy's famous cities, such as Venice, Padua, Trieste, Udine and Treviso.

  • Two of the bedrooms are doubles with king size beds. The third bedroom is a small bedroom with twin beds - ideal for children (even though they are adult size beds).I think that 6 adults sleeping in the apartment might be rather tight, unless for short stays.

A car, whilst not essential, is advisable, both for getting to Cortina and for moving around once there. PLEASE NOTE: While most of the time the parking entrance and area is clear of snow, in heavy fall years you may (albeit rarely: I have never) need snow chains at the ready. There is a good bus service passing Venice Mestre train station, that also passes Venice Marco Polo airport, to Cortina, called the Cortina Express, that then goes back as well. Around Cortina is the Dolomiti bus service which is included in the ski pass price, taking one to the slopes, and Faloria cable car is about a 4 minute walk from the house too. The nearest airports are Venice and Treviso (between them served by BA, Easyjet and Ryanair from London). Overall very good chalet-flat. Well positioned. Two key sets, easy walk down to Cortina, two balconies. Responsive host, teething trouble with WiFi but good 4g in area. 4DU handle Check-in and out, Luca will chase them as required. Good.

Highly recommended Cortina apartment

This apartment is in a great location for a visit to Cortina as it is in a small hamlet just outside of the main centre of the town. This means that there is no problem with access or parking, but it is only a 5 minute walk to the main street of Cortina on a pedestrian track that starts almost outside the main door of the apartment block. The apartment itself is exactly as shown in the photos - a typical charming alpine home, but with lots of mod cons, e.g. a dishwasher and very comfortable beds and living space. It had everything we needed for a two week stay. The washing machine is small but we just used it more often - it beats wasting time at the laundromat! There is a west facing terrace with table that captures the afternoon and evening sun and another south facing terrace that is shaded in the evening. Both terraces offer good views of the mountains. For shopping you can head into the centre of Cortina and shop in the Co-operativa on the main street or walk a little further to the Kanguro - the range and prices vary at both but in the end we found the Co-operativa the better option. Additionally there are two Alimentari on the main road heading north out of Cortina that are only a 5 minute drive from the apartment and which offer better parking options than the Kanguro (my tip if you want to shop at the Kanguro with a car is to be there at 8.30am on a Sunday morning to beat the crowd to the six or so car parking spaces available). We spent two weeks hiking in the mountains around Cortina and found the location of the apartment to be good both in terms of hikes we could do without taking the car and for easy access to hiking areas that we had to drive to. There are maps in the apartment that can be used for hiking. Contact with Luca, the owner, was excellent. A highly recommended apartment!

Perfect!

We stayed at this apartment last week and had a thoroughly enjoyable week. The apartment is well organised and comfortable. W are a family of six and we spent the week hiking and doing amazing via ferata in the beautiful Dolomites The apartment is only a short walk (10 mins) from town, and we could easily shop without getting in the car. Great views of Tofane from the balcony and main room windows. Would definitely recommend this apartment!

Great place. Horrible WiFi service.

The property was great, and Luca, the owner, cares about his guests. Unfortunately, the property had no WiFi for the majority of our stay as they only buy a few gigabytes a week and prior guests had used it up. We had 6 guests with no internet, ability to respond to emails, make calls etc, without high data charges. That should have been disclosed. But the place was in a great location very near town and was great otherwise. If it had reliable WiFi we would stay there again. Thanks Luca!

Owner's Response: Dear Robert, I am sorry the wifi wasn't great for you: as I mentioned, it has been a year since I had requested a telephone line from the state provider: ironically a week after you left they finally turned up and installed a high speed fibre line so the internet is now great. Cosy apartment close to the centre yet with great views too! Helpful owner

I came here with my family and had a lovely few days: the property is well laid out, in a nice traditional style, and in a nice building. Location is great as just outside the centre but only 5 mins walk from it (so no parking problems!).

The bathrooms and bedrooms seem to have been recently re-done, and the kitchen has brand new appliances, and seems to have everything we needed.

I loved Cortina and our stay at the property!
