Newly Constructed, Cozy Cottage On A 100 Year Old Apple Orchard Ranch
About nancy puder
Being central California natives, Mendocino was an unknown destination to us until the early 70's but once discovered, it was home. We settled on the coast, embraced 'back to the land', cultivating farm animals and gardens, learning how to run chainsaws and tractors without losing digits, eventually raising two sons and countless chickens. We purchased an overgrown apple orchard, designed and built our present house and continue to love and appreciate our lives here. This is a community of artists, fierce protectors of our coast and populated by people who can be counted on for support when needed. We know and love our neighbors, even the ones that may drive you a little bit crazy. Our own love of travel inspired us to build a small cottage that would be a comfortable home away from home. We have the space and opportunity to share a piece of our paradise with others and look forward to meeting fellow travelers.

Why nancy puder chose Mendocino
Once you enter our gates, you won't question why we chose to live here. The property consists of gnarled, twisted apple trees, most planted around 1910. Though old and contorted, they still produce an amazing variety of heritage fruit. Open meadows are encircled by a forest of redwoods, fir and pine. The property backs up to Jackson State Forest, so essentially, we have a 90,000 acre backyard. Slopping down the south embankment approximately 1 mile, you reach Big River. Our location is close to town, yet considerably warmer than the coast. We are generally out of the fog belt with a 15-20 degree difference. What we lack in an ocean view, we make up with sunny days and open vistas.
What makes this Cottage unique
Your private cottage is equipped with everything we could think of to make it special. A large front porch has a covered roof, enabling you to sit out and enjoy the view of the property, protected from drizzle and rain. A fire pit beckons for an evening spent under the stars. There's a claw foot bath tub on the back porch, just waiting for hot water and bubbles. While the tub is exposed to the elements, the deer are the only eyes that might sneak a peek. It's a very short drive or bike ride to town. (Going to town is a cinch... all down hill. Coming back takes a bit more effort, or call and we'll pick you up :-) ) The cottage was designed and finished with attention to detail. All the amenities you need have been provided and some you may not even know you desired. Egyptian linens, down comforters, plush towels, organic soaps and lotions and numerous luxury items have been carefully chosen. We want you to feel pampered and relaxed.

What a wonderful setting
We stayed for 3 nights in Nancy's cottage and everything was perfect. It is well located near the Town of Mendocino and the accommodations are beautiful. My husband and I enjoyed sitting by the outdoor fire pit and drinking a glass of wine watching the sunset. The kitchenette allowed us to make breakfast with Nancy's fresh eggs and to enjoy picnic dinners in the lovely outdoors. The bed was comfortable, the towels were thick and the entire cottage was perfectly clean. Nancy was a great host. I would stay at the cottage again!
Perfect quiet, private cottage close to beach and town!
I had a wonderful visit at this cute little cottage located on beautiful property and nestled among trees that provided just the right amount of privacy. The house was furnished with everything we needed and more. Nancy left a beautiful bouquet of daffodils on the table, fresh eggs, strawberries and more in the refrigerator. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about this place, but my favorite evening was taking an evening soak outdoors under the spectacular stars on a clear evening after the rain had passed. It was absolutely perfect. I am looking forward to a return visit soon! Thank you, Nancy! 😊
Beautiful and we'll maintained
This was a fantastic stay! I loved the little cottage. It was beautiful and quiet and well cared for. Nancy thought of every detail in preparing this rental for comfort. She was great with communication by giving me lots if information and responding quickly to any questions. I highly recommend this cottage for anyone who wants peace and comfort.
So heart warming to know that you and your son enjoy to travel together. Although the cottage is on the small side, there is enough space for the blow up bed, leaving plenty of floor clearance for moving around comfortably. The outdoor areas add some additional "walking around" room, as well. Glad you enjoyed your time on the coast.
A lovely cottage on a beautiful property.
So well thought out. Everything that we needed and more. Warm and intimate. For nature lovers and hikers, we recommend exploring the forest trail that begins just across the road.
Your little get away was perfect timing, just prior to the holiday rush... even the weather held out enough to walk the forest trail ;-)
Been getting quite a harvest of mushrooms!
Don't forget your bikes, next time. The trails are a bit mushy this time of year but still an invigorating adventure for the hardy.
Hope you get the chance to return
Farm house elegance extraordinaire!
Everything was perfect! it was obvious that much thought and care went into every detail of this property. The architecture of the cottage alone was enough to keep me coming back. The outdoor fire pit, backyard soaking tub, and wild Quail were among my favorite things. Oh yes — and the forest view from the bed. Everything is sparkling clean and the cottage is full of light. I enjoyed preparing food in the smart little kitchen. What a treasure!
(nice name, happens to be my middle name, as well ;-)
Always gratifying when guests enjoy the various elements in the cottage... it's been like having a large doll house to decorate. Very fun for me and happy to be able to share it.
I'm actually in the process of making a prep island for the kitchen. It will give a lot more space for preparing and cooking. I've been a little surprised that so many guests have preferred to stay in and cook, rather than dine out. The "new and improved" facilities should be complete by Feb., or the latest, March. Now you just have to return and try it out.
Just what we needed.
Nancy's cottage provided the perfect getaway for my wife and me Cozy, comfortable, and clean with all we needed for a needed weekend away from it all.
Tomatoes from the garden, fresh eggs in the fridge, dozens of quail roaming nearby, and multiple soaks in the outdoor tub were just some of the perks.
Much thanks to Nancy for her attention and privacy.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Peaceful and beautiful.
So glad you were able to come to the coast. Unfortunately, it feels like a repeat of last year's fires, especially for you, experiencing it first hand. I'm grateful to offer a place of respite. As far as the outdoor tub; I love it too. I've utilized it myself when the cottage isn't booked. (which is beginning to be difficult to find an opening for me :-( ) Now about those tomatoes... if you really want to thank me, make sure to take some zucchinis next time!! They've begun to take over, multiplying faster than can be harvested. So head on back
Mendocino is a historically significant area and is a registered national monument. The town itself is architecturally designed in the Victorian style. It is preserved and restricted to further development.
Mendocino Art Center was established in the 60's by artists leaving the high cost of living in the San Francisco area. It remains a vibrant attraction for artists coming to the coast to experience further growth in their fields of interest. Amateur, as well as professional artists, find inspiration with the environment of personal support.
There are numerous art galleries scattered throughout the town, as well as interesting and unique articles for sale in the quaint shops.
The town boasts many gourmet restaurants, often farm to table style and particularly organically grown, locally produced items.
Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the trails along the ocean bluffs, hiking the miles of forest haul roads, walking the many beaches or riding bikes on roadways or trails.
Sport fishing remains a strong component, primarily salmon, rock cod, crab and ling. Shell fish such as mussels and abalone attract the water hardy.
The near by town of Fort Bragg has a gorgeous botanical garden, located on the headlands. A full day can be filled strolling the gardens, walking the bluffs, whale watching, or even taking gardening classes.
There is a newly constructed aquatics park, boasting two huge indoor pools. Swimming lanes are separated from the lazy river moat which is heated to 85 degrees. There are numerous classes given in swimming, aerobics, spin, zumba, weight lifting, etc. An all day pass can be purchased or 'Silver Shoe' admission is free.
