I am English but have an Italian mother. I was born in Firenze and always came back to Tuscany for holidays.
Olivia Gold purchased this house in 2005
My grandfather was born in Castagneto Carducci and I have always loved this area.
I always wanted a holiday home in this area and wanted a garden so that I can enjoy the beautiful countryside and views from my own space.
We had a lovely fortnight in La Civetta. The property was clean and the kitchen facilities just what was needed for quite a bit of self-catering.
The pool was large, just as it looks in the photo - and often it was just us and one or two other families using it.
We were very lucky that both of our weekends coincided with food festivals in the nearby village of Monteverdi Marritimo. We ate fantastic, cheap food at long tables with the locals.
The house was in a lovely mountainside location with beautiful views. The surrounding areas were excellent for exploring rustic Tuscany, with many lovely little villages dotted around for us to explore. We enjoyed our evenings relaxing on the terrace, using the BBQ to cook fresh food from the markets. The days when we didn’t feel like cooking we ventured up the hill to the on site bar/restaurant, adjacent to the pool. There we enjoyed some really tasty traditional Italian food made with all fresh produce from the local area, proof of this was the handwritten menu! The swimming pool had breathtaking panoramic views of the valley below and we spent a couple of evenings just drinking at the bar by the pool soaking it in, a big reward for just a 5 minute walk up the hill! The house was close enough to Pisa and Florence for us to make a day trip to each, with a toddler in tow. However out of all the places we visited we fell in love with Castagneto Carducci, a perfect example of a sleepy Italian town with friendly locals and ice cream to die for, just a 15 minute car ride down the mountain. Overall we would definitely go back again and again, perfect for our little ones during the day and us adults in the evening!
We liked "Le Rondini" very much, especially the nice view. The size was perfect, the kitchen was well equipped. In some corners there could have been more cleanliness. The pool was huge but they were playing music all the time, maybe not everybody likes that...For me and the kids it was ok.
A winding road leads to the beach, my kids needed always chewinggum to prohibit sickness. The Beach at Donoratico is perfect and Castagneto Carducci (the next "city") is really beatiful and a nice spot for dinner and short walks.
We spent a delightful week at La Civetta, tucked way in the remote mountains between Monteverdi Marittimo and Sassetta. The villetta was lovely, the pool delightful and refreshing - this is obviously a popular weekend spot for Italians wanting to escape the heat and hustle of nearby cities. The small villages in the area offer a true taste of Tuscany, friendly people, quaint cafes, delicious food. Close enough for day trips to Pisa and Florence, and with the closest beach only 8 miles away, our only regret was that we didn't have twice the time to explore the area!
La Civetta is beautiful and well equipped. The patio is like an additional room, that we have intensively used during our stay. The pool can be reached easily by a lovely little path and is a wonderful place to relax. Cloud and her husband have affectionately assembled a map with a lot of information about the region, the beaches, restaurants etc. This map has been extremely helpful.
The only constraint that we would make in our praise, have been the cupboards that we partly couldn' t use because of the unpleasant smell inside.
This is ideal country for walking, cycling, horse riding or touring. The hills abound with wildlife, from tiny birds to wild boar and deer. For those wanting to see the sights, Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Siena are all within easy reach. Half an hour will bring you to one of the best sandy beaches in Tuscany at Castagneto. San Vincenzo and Baratti are also within 45 minutes. Local shops can be found at Monteverdi and Sassetta, both 10 mins away. Larger supermarkets are at Donoratico 10km. There is a choice of excellent restaurants, details of which can be found in each house. The cuisine includes locally available meat, game produce, home-made pasta and is simple but delicious. There are also many vineyards in the area which can be visited to buy or just to taste. Many of the 'Supertuscan' wines such as Ornellaia and Sassicaia are grown nearby. There are interesting and pretty medieval towns and villages to visit and beautiful countryside to enjoy.
La Cerretta has a beautiful outdoor and indoor spa pool. 10 minutes by car.
