A good base

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was nice and practical and provided everything needed for cooking, washing clothes etc. We were 2 adults and 2 children (11, 14). A beautiful pool with a scenic view was a 5 min walk away, but apart from that, this village of cottages doesn't really have that much to offer, and you'll definitely need a car to explore, get groceries, visit restaurants etc, but with a car there are plenty of places to visit in this area. 10-15 min drives to Castagneto Carducci, Monteverdi Maritimo and Sassetta for restaurants, 30 and 40 min drives to the beautiful beaches of Donoratico (just south of the Marina de Castagneto Carducci) and (especially) Baratti, respectively. A good starting point for visiting Volterra, San Gimignano and Bolgheri (and probably other towns, it was hot, we spent a lot of time near the sea :-)). The owner (Olivia) handled everything professionally and response time was short if we had any inquiries.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. Certainly our property is in a rural and rustic setting so a car is a must but there is loads to see in the area with fabulous beaches.

Nice accommodation in unspoilt rural location

  • 5 of 5

Spent 10 days with my wife in this very relaxing villa in a beautiful rural location. Liked it so much we are going back shortly to investigating buying a property on this development. Each unit has a secluded position in a wooded location. The location is high enough in the hills to keep it pleasantly cool even when hot outside. Convenient to explore nearby attractive villages [ equidistant from Sassetta and Monteverdi a few minutes drive away ] . The small town of Castelluccio [ 10 min drive] has many really good eating places. Good beaches 25 mins by car.

Two good sized bedrooms, and well equipped.[ a parasol for the beach would be a good addition]

Would certainly recommend . The large communal pool is a wonderful amenity and within easy walking distance. The pool has a restaurant on site for convenience. The area is as nice an area in tuscany [ especially if you like wine] as we have found.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We really appreciate it. In response to your comment about the beach umbrella, we did have one but it disappeared last year. Also, they do get damaged. We will replace it for next year.

Nice house in a quiet and beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in La Civetta in week 28, 2015. Two persons. The house is rustic and authentic but at the same time modern, with almost all facilities (except air conditioning). Lovely covered terrace and private garden. Arrival at the property worked perfectly and the house was clean. Also Wireless internet worked perfectly.

The houses are located on a hill with an incredibly good view. Likewise, there is a very beautiful view from the pool area and from the restaurant. The area is quiet and not very touristy. Many of the homes are owned by Italians who use the homes on weekends and holidays. We were there enough early in the season, so it was only at the weekend, there were many people at the pool. All the other days we had it almost to ourselves. The pool is large, and it was clean. Also a good restaurant. It would be great if the restaurant would open a mini market with the most basic things such as bread and water etc.

The small surrounding towns Castagneto Carducci, Sassetta and Monteverdi Marittimo is very authentic and beautiful.

Thanks to the owner Cloud Alford, as all the way through was very communicative and easy to get in touch with. Fast answers all the time.

We had a great week in La Civetta and we highly recommend the place and we will love to come back another time.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Tina and Ole for your review. I am really pleased that you enjoyed your stay at La Civetta. I believe that the restaurant is intending to open a minimarket in high season, but they are new proprietors and I have not been able to check this out. I hope we will hear from you again. Cloud

Wonderful holiday in lesser known part of Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

This is the third time we have stayed here over the last few years and each time the experience has been fantastic. The quiet and peaceful location set amongst the hills in southern Tuscany is magnificent and the peaceful countryside is dotted with small villages yet a few minutes from long sandy beaches on the coast. We visited local markets for the shopping and food, the beaches were very clean and easily accessible. On site there is a stunning swimming pool (half Olympic) with a small restaurant and café whilst you can also pop out to a number of local restaurants if necessary. The area itself offers a great combination of seaside, mountains and history. The accommodation is modern yet constructed in the traditional Tuscan style and comfortable and very roomy. Outside there is a wonderful patio where we enjoyed our breakfast each day looking at the view stretching across the mountains. All in all it just gets harder to leave each time we visit!

Stunning views over the Tuscan Hills and Valleys

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over the Easter period in 2013. The cottage is very comfortable and warm and really gives you the idea of living in the middle of the Tuscan countryside. It is situated up in the hills above Castagneto Carducci (one of the local hilltop medieval villages) which is very popular with tourists, whereas the cottage's location is far more quiet. Ideal for some lovely walks. The swimming pool was obviously not open at that time, but looked fabulous just perched on a terrace with uninterrupted views. It was very easy to find some little rustic restaurants in the nearby villages. The sea was only about 20/ 30 minutes away. We visited Livorno, Florence Lucca and Pisa from here. Not very long using the motorways. Will definitely stay again, maybe when the pool is open.

2 weeks at the end of July 2011

  • 5 of 5

My wife and our three kids stayed in this property for two weeks. There are two bedrooms and an easy pull out bed in the main room. The place is compact, clean, well maintained and has everything you need for a good self catering holiday. We particulalrly liked the small garden/patio for evening meals - great views.

The kids enjoyed access to the pool which has spectacular views but the local bar (because it has a monopoly over the area is quite expensive).

The area is great for a get away place - very quiet - not for people seeking an urban experience.

The coast line near by is stunning for people who enjoy unspoilt beach/dune/forest areas - we would recommend Rimigliano about 25 mins drive.

Sassetta (about 10 mins drive) is a good spot for ice cream/cheap pizza and some shops and is now the nearest cash point as the one in Montiverdi is closed.

The area is good for wine and the local shop is Montiverdi is well worth a visit although it takes w while to get what you want from the owner as it is more of a show than a retail experience and be prepared to haggle over his special price - wild boar, cheese, olive oil and wine are good - although you might also want to drive off into the hiils to find a cooperative for good wine deals.

If you fancy a drive Siena, Florence and Pisa are great day trips.

Overall - very happy and would recommend.

Owner's Response: We are always very pleased when our guests have a good holiday at our house. We Also would recommend Rimigliano for a glorious beach. The sea is safe for children and the sand lovely. There are also nice picnic spots under the pine trees for your lunch. The bar at the pool can be a bit expensive but the food is good and the views are spectacular.

This is ideal country for walking, cycling, horse riding or touring. The hills abound with wildlife, from tiny birds to wild boar and deer. For those wanting to see the sights, Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Siena are all within easy reach. Half an hour will bring you to one of the best sandy beaches in Tuscany at Castagneto. San Vincenzo and Baratti are also within 45 minutes. Local shops can be found at Monteverdi and Sassetta, both 10 mins away. Larger supermarkets are at Donoratico 10km. There is a choice of excellent restaurants, details of which can be found in each house. The cuisine includes locally available meat, game produce, home-made pasta and is simple but delicious. There are also many vineyards in the area which can be visited to buy or just to taste. Many of the 'Supertuscan' wines such as Ornellaia and Sassicaia are grown nearby. There are interesting and pretty medieval towns and villages to visit and beautiful countryside to enjoy.

La Cerretta has a beautiful outdoor and indoor spa pool. 10 minutes by car.
