Ballycotton is a beautiful location. The house was beyond expectations! The views fantastic, the living area/ kitchen a dream. The bedrooms were so comfortable and private. The owner provided friendly suggestions and they were helpful. Everything we needed was provided with quality everywhere in comfort, style, and space. The location is perfect to enjoy the area. We could walk everywhere!

We were actively a part of the beauty available in Ballycotton: Walking the town, enjoying the walkway along the ocean’s edge, visiting the light house, enjoying the flowers, eating at a variety of restaurants , seeing the dock filled with hard working fisherman, walking among the rocks at low tide, talking to friendly people, embracing the beauty of the area. A walk-able town to purchase your day to day needs and beautiful weather all made our days outstanding. Topped off with a fantastic house!

Ballycotton and this rental is a dream vacation! Wished we had 2 weeks to absorb the environment and to spend in this wonderful house!

Welcome to Ballycotton

Ballycotton (51' 82.81N 08' 00.90W) is a famous picturesque fishing village situated approximately 40km (25 miles) east of Cork City. The village is set on a rocky-ledge overlooking Ballycotton Bay. There is a busy fishing pier, working lighthouse and a world-famous lifeboat. As well as a shop & post office, pubs and restaurants.

Ballycotton is closely located to several East cork attractions : The Ballymaloe Cookery School, shop and gardens, Ballymaloe House, shop, cafe and gardens , Garryvoe Beach, the historic market town of Midleton and the Jameson Distillery .

Ballycotton Lighthouse

Sited on Ballycotton Island, the light was first exhibited on June 1, 1851. The tower was painted black in 1902. In 1975, the light was converted to electricity and the original 1851 optic was replaced by an AGA sealed-beam lamp array. The lighthouse was automated in 1992. For more information check out Commission of Irish Lights - Ballycotton.

Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk is from Ballycotton village to Ballyandreen beach along a cliff track where you are flanked by meadows on one side and the ocean on the other. It starts at the end of Ballycotton village (at the y in the road take the right up the hill, the left takes you to the pier). The walk extends over 5 miles on a foot worn track along the cliff face with stunning views and passes Ballytrasna beach. There are many stiles to cross on the route (so not suitable for bikes or buggies).

Local Services

Ballycotton village has a well stocked shop which is opened from 8am to 8pm all year round. There is also a post office attached to the Ballycotton shop. For petrol and diesel there is Brodericks in Shanagarry. You can buy fresh seafood in Garryvoe from Ballycotton Seafood.

Ballycotton has a proud fishing tradition and many locals still earn their livelihood from fishing. From Ballycotton pier and breakwater you can fish for mackerel and conger (night time best) and from the Breakwater you can bottom fish for plaice, dabs, black sole and dogfish, codling in winter time and mullet inside the Breakwater. The Irish record for plaice and black sole have been recorded here. All around Ballycotton Bay has great fishing spots. Check out the fishing websites for more details.

Deep Sea Angling

From Ballycotton Pier you can charter a boat and trips can be tailored to suit the needs of passengers.

Ballycotton Lifeboat Station

Ballycotton is one of the oldest stations in Ireland, being opened in 1858. Today, the station operates one of the most modern lifeboats in the RNLI's fleet, The 14m Trent class all weather lifeboat. The lifeboat volunteers who crew the boat and manage the station are proud of their station and record.

Ballycotton Lifeboat Souvenir Shop is open every Sunday afternoon between 3pm and 5pm throughout the summer.

She can now be seen on the cliffs of Ballycotton , restored to her former glory .
