Private and Peaceful
We loved staying here, it felt so private and secluded. The apartment is very clean and lovely. Kitchen has everything you need. Being right above the river was enchanting, we relaxed to the sound of the rushing water. We were sad to leave.
The place is literally just minutes from downtown and Hilo Bay. Gary and Vanessa are terrific hosts and make you feel very welcome. Highly recommend staying here.
Very scenic and and the place was very clean and roomy. Great suggestions provided by the host. The set up is great too, apartment is part of the house but only has one entrance that is separate from the house entrance so you get your own space but the comfort of having someone there in case you do need something.
Private, quiet, beautiful
Eggs, fresh jam, English muffins and juice were in the fridge for us. Breakfast on the private patio, overlooking a breathtaking falls was great. It is secluded. It smelled a bit mossy, but it looked totally clean. I just think it is so close to the river that everything smells jungle-like. There was a washer and dryer in the private bathroom. Parking was free. Wifi was free. Close to Rainbow Falls. Had a nice experience there.
Cute, Compact, Sweet Little Place Adjacent to Churning River Near Town
If you're looking for a place for a couple to hang their hat while visiting the Hilo side of the island, this is a wonderful little spot. It's small. Small bedroom, small living area with counter, toaster, microwave, full-size refrigerator. Compared to the 1200 sq.ft. upscale condo we stayed at in Waikaloa, this is quaint.
The owners (who live upstairs most of the time) left eggs, english muffins, and Tropicana orange juice so we could avail ourselves to breakfast. Because we were doing so much sight-seeing, we didn't take advantage of that until the day we were leaving.
The bedroom is on the dark side, but there are a couple of windows that can add some outside light. There is a rod with hangers as well as shelves.
Just outside the sliding door to the living area is a tall table with stools (w/backs) so you can enjoy whatever overlooking the churning river. Close to breathtaking view.
I never spoke to the wife, but the husband, who has a business on Oahu, initially answered the phone rather gruffly, mistaking my call for spam or a sales call. But meeting him in person, he turned out to be quite sweet. I suggested that he be sure to get cellphone numbers from those who stay and put them into his phone so that he is aware of who is calling.
We were greeted with great signs welcoming us to their property. Over the top and very much appreciated.
Reed's Island, where their place is located, is across a one-lane bridge into an upscale area. There are little in the way of street lights. If you're following a GPS, it will take you on a winding road and you don't know if you're being taken to the right spot or not. Winding our way up their street, at the base of their property (the driveway is up a fairly steep hill) was a welcome sign saying "Jeff here" with an arrow pointing up the driveway. Cool!
Once up the driveway, there was a lit, erasable board that said "Welcome Jeff and Laurie! Park here.", with another arrow pointing the part of the driveway where our space was designated. Another arrow with a statement pointed us to the apartment.
You're a few minute ride into town with a car. About a 15 minute walk, but the walk is a bit harrowing given the single lane bridge and limited light at night (we did that once).
If you don't mind small and quaint, with not the means for extensive cooking, this is a really sweet place. They even have a notebook full of suggestions for activities and restaurants. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.
We stayed 3 nights in this delightful apartment on Reed's Island, overlooking a beautiful waterfall. The room was spacious and comfortable and quiet. Our hosts left great fixings for breakfast in the refrigerator, including delicious jam and fresh eggs. Really appreciated having access to washer/dryer and being close to downtown Hilo. It was the prefect respite after 4 days in Waikiki!
Very Very Nice Spot for an extended visit!
We stayed 7 nights and felt right at home. As others have already mentioned, this is an incredible quiet location very close to downtown Hilo. We were unlucky enough to stay during a time when the trade winds were not in our favor, but did just fine with open windows and the provided fan. It was a great home base to use while exploring the many sites around Hilo, Volcanoes National Park, and the entire west coast.
We were on the go so much, we didn't get to much of a chance to visit with the hosts until the last couple of days. This is a shame, because we would have liked to spend more time getting to know them much better. Next time!
This is not a resort. This is a nice place to stay for some peace and quiet, listen to the river while sipping a beverage, and still be conveniently located to all of Hilo. And as can be seen with the listing, don't expect a gourmet kitchen. However, we could easily prep a few meals with what was available. Being able to do a bit of laundry before our next adventure was a real time saver. No question for us, we will be back!
Mahalo Gary and Vanessa! We wish you the best in your future endeavors and look forward to seeing your family again soon.
