About Barbara Whitney
We have lived in Herefordshire for 7 years but have been visiting this beautiful area for nearly 30 years. Whilst we both run our own businesses we also have time for our 2 horses, 6 sheep and 3 sweet dogs.
Barbara Whitney purchased this Cottage in 2011
Why Barbara Whitney chose Ross-on-Wye
The property is set in a secluded beautiful location with the main house being set some distance away from the converted holiday barn allowing true privacy. We love the feel of driving through the apple orchards on a sunny day where you could truly believe you were driving through Tuscan vineyards!
What makes this Cottage unique
The seclusion and privacy yet accessibility to local historical towns and villages is very unique. The property is surrounded by land with a beautiful private small lake with ducks and lovely flowers.

Lovely cottage, lovely setting
The cottage is finished to a high standard and positively gleamed on arrival. We also appreciated the welcome pack sourced from the local farm shop (which we later visited and bought tasty provisions from).
The enclosed patio garden was perfect for our kids (8 and 3) to scoot around on, we all enjoyed our three night stay.
Recommended for families, couples and friends who want something out of the way but still within a short car journey of Ross-on-Wye and the Forest of Dean.
Vegans might like to know there is an animal skin rug in the sofa/TV area, which I'm pretty sure could be rolled up and stored out of sight before arrival, if you asked the host.
1st Class. Fantastic property. One of the best rental property I have ever stayed at.
If it's peace and quiet your after, then this is for you. Superb decor, comfortable with everything you need. Great welcome pack from a generous host.
Beautiful Countryside Getaway
We absolutely loved our stay at the Cottage at Ross on Wye, the pictures do not do this place justice at all. The cottage was so nicely designed and so comfortable, the property was beyond beautiful. Barbara was so helpful and kind. There was muffins, milk, coffee and tea provided on arrival. In addition we visited a couple of very cute and delicious pubs nearby that were recommended. We would definitely stay again!
A rural idyll
A rural idyll that suits those with or without children who wish to explore this unspoilt corner of the country.
Lovely barn, peaceful location
This is a lovely, comfortable barn. Barbara, the owner, has always been on hand and so helpful when we have had a query or request, whilst always being respectful of our space.
Our stay was extended due to building work being completed on our own house. We’ve enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. The location is fantastic, well maintained gardens, with beautiful trees, an interesting and tranquil pond, with wildlife....Our son, age 2 , has adored watching birds nest, ducklings grow and has learned so much about the changing seasons and wildlife on his doorstep now. The outside patio attached to the barn is self contained, and has a beautiful outlook over fields, particularly in the evenings.
The barn itself was clean when we arrived, and the bottle was appreciated after a day of packing and unpacking! Rooms are spacious, comfortable, with modern apppliances in the kitchen and is tastefully decorated throughout.
So....we’ve booked it again ...as building work continues...(!) We’d absolutely recommend this property. Although we live nearby we discovered new wonderful places nearby in Monmouthshire, and Herefordshire, Skenfrith is just down the road, castle ruins, fab pub and a river to swim in... Ross on Wye is a short car journey to larger shops, but there is also the wonderful local farm shop down the road.
Very modern quiet location
The property was ideal for a holiday accommodation for my brother who needs a property on one level and walk in shower. We felt the kitchen had limited space for food storage and also need a more comprehensive range of cooking dishes. Overall a comfortable retreat.
