About Angelo Mastropietro
My background is that I was the head of a successful recruitment company in Australia, where I lived for a decade, when a multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2007 left me temporarily paralysed. My MS was triggered by health and lifestyle and that was the catalyst I needed to remind me that I needed to be mindful of my health and be respectful of my lifestyle. I wanted to be in a place where I had a happier and healthier life. I first came across the cave in 1999 when he took refuge in the space during a rainy bike ride. The cave, which had been used as a four-bedroom house for 300 years, was abandoned in the late 1940s. returned to Britain in 2010, saw the property listed more than ten years after that fateful bike ride and decided to take the plunge. I purchased the cave, part of a row of living spaces considered to be the oldest inhabited rock houses in the whole of Europe, for £62,000. With a budget of £100,000 I worked single-handedly to transform the space by excavating 70-80 tonnes of rock. A single doorway between two rooms took me 11 days of work to hack through 5-feet of rock. I also cut and drilled into the hillside, and all of the fresh running water comes from my own bore hole, which I sank 80 metres into the ground. I wanted to celebrate that it is a cave dwellings, but I want to add modern day luxuries, and It definitely has a modern feel but hopefully retains some cave charm! I'm so proud to have achieved this and would love to come and stay and be inspired by this project!

Why Angelo Mastropietro chose Kidderminster Foreign
Awake your inner cave dweller at the truly unforgettable Rockhouse Retreat. As the UK's first contemporary rock house (that's a home carved into a rock if you're wondering!), the Rockhouse Retreat offers tranquillity and seclusion from modern life, giving couples the chance to relax, contemplate and rejuvenate in beautiful surroundings. Set on the banks of Honey Brook among 3 acres of private Worcestershire woodland, the Rockhouse Retreat was handsculpted over 700 years ago from a Triassic sandstone escarpment (you can still see the original pick axe marks on the walls). Despite providing a cosy haven for centuries to follow, it was sadly abandoned in the early ‘60s. It wasn't until 2015 that owner Angelo Mastropietro restored the Rockhouse - a process that was even featured on BBC's Grand Designs. Today, the Rockhouse Retreat blends 300-year old original features - including vaulted ceilings, ornamental nooks and an inglenook fireplace - with modern comforts, creating the perfect romantic bolthole. Close to the historic riverside town of Bewdley and the Wyre Forest which has over 40km of trails through hectares of ancient unspoilt woodland, there are also many walking trails right on the doorstep. What makes this Cabin unique
Banish all thoughts of caves being dark and cold; natural light floods the living and dining areas, while wood fires and under-floor heating keep you warm and cosy even on winter's nights. For places where natural light can't reach, soft LED mood lighting adds ambience, and the whitewashed walls make this cave anything but gloomy. Get a good night's sleep in the king-sized bed (the animal hide bedspreads provide added cave-appeal!), before taking a refreshing shower in the unique walk-in ‘cave oasis'. Go on to prepare a sumptuous breakfast in the well-equipped kitchen, complete with beautiful bespoke cabinets, butler sink and wooden worktops. The ‘Everhot' 3-oven range and induction hob will have any budding chef in their element, and the microwave and Nespresso machine make things easier for those who want to spend more of their time relaxing. Ever fancied al fresco cooking? You'll love the outdoor kitchen - complete with BBQ - before dining on the terrace, with the fire pit for warmth and unbeatable views of rolling hillside to savour. You might even enjoy your complimentary bottle of ‘Rockhouse Red' as the sun goes down!
