Cannaregio is the northernmost of the six historic sestieri (districts) of Venice. It is the second largest sestiere by area and the largest by population,
The Cannaregio Canal, which was the main road in the city until the construction of a rail link to the mainland, gave the district its name. Development began in the eleventh century that the area was drained and parallel channels were dredged. Although elegant qu'arabo Normandy were built in front of the Grand Canal, the area has increased mainly with the working class housing and manufacturing. The history of the Ghetto of Venice is generated fascinating. When 29 March 1516, the government of the Serenissima Repubblica issued special laws, the first Ghetto of Europe was established. This is an area where Jews were forced to live and they could not leave from sunset to dawn. The area was closed by gates watched by guards and so far the marks of the hinges are visible there. Jews were allowed to practice only in certain professions were doctors, because they were the most willing and able to understand the Arabic writings, money lenders, because the Catholic religion forbids this practice, traders and " strazzarioli "ragsellers. However, the Jews have held successful positions in the city as merchants, physicians, money lenders and other businesses. The Ghetto existed for over two centuries, until Napoleon conquered Venice and finally opened and eliminated every gate (1797): the Jews were finally free to live in other areas of the city.
In the nineteenth century, civil engineers built a street named Strada Nuova, through Cannaregio and a railway bridge and the road bridge was built to connect directly to Venice Mestre. Today, areas along the Grand Canal district, the train station to the Rialto Bridge are highly frequented by tourists, but the rest of Cannaregio is residential and relatively peaceful, with morning markets, neighborhood shops and small cafes.
When you arrive at the apartment we ask you for cash payment of the "Tassa di Soggiorno" that the Municipality of Venice has recently established for private rental apartment (currently 1. 5 euros / person / night). You will receive a receipt for this payment.
Lovely property in great neighborhood, with very helpful owners.
Our group of 4 thouroughly enjoyed our stay. The flat is located away from the really touristy part of Venice, but close enough that you can be a part of it all in a few minutes of walking. The accommodations were indeed luxurious and working the Marc and his dad was very easy.
I booked this property for a women's trip to see the Biennale and we loved it. There are 3 big bedrooms with plenty of room to unpack and hang up clothes for the week. The kitchen was a great space and the living room was big and included a large dining table. We also loved the location being in the Cannaregio district - happening night life one street over, close to a market and of course shopping. Michel met us at the Vaporetto stop and showed us everything we needed to know for the property and we had a magical week there. It was clean and charming with great views of the canal and had everything we needed to enjoy our trip. Don't miss eating at 40 Ladroni which is right downstairs - authentic Italian food and the owners/waiters treated us like family by the end of the trip - not to be missed. I would highly recommend this beautiful space to anyone staying in Venice. Thank you Marc for such a great trip!! We will be back!
Our family of four (including two teenage children) loved this apartment. It has old world charm, was above a lovely trattoria on a canal clearly embraced by locals. Staying here made it feel like we were living in Venice, rather than just visiting. Elisabeth and Marc had everything prepared to welcome us in, even though we arrived at early in the morning after a red eye flight. They had stocked fruit, coffee, milk, and even a few local Venetian treats. We would highly recommend this to anyone wanting an experience outside the crowded venues overrun by tourists.
Beautiful home, very welcoming, great location. Be sure to ask about the mosquito lights, especially if sleeping in the loft.
Our family of 5 stayed for 4 days and loved it. The location is in a local neighborhood, so you get the real feel for life in Venice today away from the mobs of tourists. From the front window you hear and see all the action on little canal, tons of working boats and families heading off to work and school in the morning. The apartment is well appointed with a true Venetian character.
We walked everywhere and thoroughly enjoyed meandering through the narrow winding streets. Google Maps is an invaluable tool even without a data plan. You can find your location on a map which will keep you from getting too far lost.
Elisabeth was a marvelous host; leaving wonderful treats and making sure everything about the stay was perfect. Her efforts alone are worth 5 stars. We would definitely return and recommend the apartment highly.
