Log home on the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Pontoon is also available
About Pete Passolt
We built this home in 2008 for year-round use. If you want to relax and enjoy what the Boundary Waters Canoe Area has to offer- this is your best bet.
Pete Passolt purchased this House in 2004
Why Pete Passolt chose Grand Marais
If you want a remote location, but still want all the modern amenities and comforts, look no further. Running hot & cold water, shower, flushing toilet, etc. Power is supplied by a solar/generator system. Works just like your own home.
What makes this House unique
There are very few lakes which directly abut a federally protected wilderness- this is one of them. McFarland Lake borders the 1 million acre Boundary Waters Wilderness. From the dock you can literally paddle right into the wilderness via two access points: John Lake, and Pine Lake. There is also the famed Border Route Hiking Trail, which lies out the back door. Take a hike along the high bluffs that comprise this part of Minnesota. You can see for miles into the wilderness and beyond...

Great place, great experience!
Remote location, has everything you need for a relaxing vacation. Beautiful area.
Pete’s cabin was the perfect end of summer getaway! We had so much fun exploring on the trails and out on the water. It was so nice to be able to come back to the cozy cabin after a day of exploring. Our puppy loved it too!
Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Amazing Stay Near BWCA
My family had an amazing week long stay at the rental. We created family memories and had a great time.
The cabin has everything you need plus many extras. The beds were comfortable, the views amazing, and living space perfect for a family of 4-6 people. We had a thunderstorm roll through one day and our family played games, including an epic game of Monopoly. One complaint on the rental was no window coverings in the bedrooms but that is a first-world complaint.
As we were far from the nearest store we brought enough meals to cover the first half of the week, then ventured into Grand Marais to restock. This was a fun way to break up the week. The cabin had everything we needed to make our meals including a grill for dinners. As the owner informs you, you must bring your own drinking water. This brings me to my other complaint: the well water stinks. This is of no one's fault. It just smells. We adjusted quickly and when in Grand Marais I picked up eco-friendly Dr Bronners to clean off in the lake.
The lake is beautiful with two unique ends (one end has a beautiful bluff) and a long channel between. We rented the pontoon and enjoyed cruising around the lake. There are many shallow areas of the lake that must be explored by paddle. We fished the lake and were not very successful but it was still fun to be out there. We swam from the dock and anchored the boat and swam in the middle of the lake too. The lake is beautiful.
We also enjoyed day trips into the BWCA. We paddled into John Lake and Pine Lake entry points using the day passes the owner provides. It was a perfect compromise for our family to paddle into the BWCA during the day and then enjoy the comforts of the rental at night. We also did a day hike on part of the BRT. This was beautiful and I plan to come back to do more of the trail.
Our family enjoyed the tranquility and beauty of McFarland lake and we were very comfortable in this beautiful log cabin. This is the second time we were able to stay for a week and we hope we can stay again. Thank you Pete and Amy!
We had an absolutely wonderful experience with this property and the owner. Everything was as we expected. The setting was perfect, the accommodations very comfortable, and the location very quiet. We would highly recommend this property!
