We stayed at the house New Year 2009 and had both house and annex. There were 28 of us from 6 -70 and the house fit us all quite happily. It is a beautiful house and also comfortable. We had many meals in the dining room and large kitchen and a lovely NY dinner. The town is close albeit quiet in winter. We hope this years festivities live up to the standard of surroundings and company in 2009!
The Mac60club has about 27 members, and this Spring 13 of us were available for a short hop across the channel from Poole. Poole - the loveliest harbour to depart from and arrive home to - was a great start to a lovely week. We arrived at Cherbourg on time, and only the wrong turning by the drivers of 3 out of 4 cars meant that the journey to the house took a little longer than expected! The house has been restored to a lovely comfortable standard, plenty of room for everyone. A large salon, an even larger dining room, a good sized kitchen as well as a laundry room and extra toilets (good thinking!) are all on the ground floor, whilst up above, loads of bedrooms, some with en suite bathrooms. And the best luxury of all with a house full of people - non-stop hot water! We rented bed linen and towels at a small fee. The town is 5 minutes walk and has a great market on Mondays where we bought loads of lovely stuff for evening meal. Normandy cream (well, Normandy yellow really!) was bought in a large bucket shaped container, and graced several desert plates. Gorgeous. Ditto the cheeses available. Our party spread out, some to the Normandy beaches and battle sites, some to Bayeau for the tapestry, some to the seaside. All are not far at all. Big tree filled garden, but would recommend that a party with younger children had an adult observer out if the kids were out, as there is a pond (not easily seen) and some outhouses which look exciting!
We spent a week at La Palmeraie over New Year 2008/9.
The house was more than large enough for our party of 9 adults and there was plenty of space for everyone.
The large kitchen was well equipped and we stayed in and cooked on several evenings, including New Years Eve, when we laid the table and had a dinner party in the large dining room.
There was plenty of dishes and cutlery and a dishwasher, which was well used!
The weather was very cold so we made good use of the open fireplace in the sitting room. The bathrooms were great with copious amounts of hot water. The bedrooms were clean but the french style double beds with footboards were not so good for several of the 6ft+ guys. The location of the house within walking distance of the village and also SuperU was excellent though several rrestaurants in town were shut. But you have to expect tthat off season. Lots of things to do within a hour driving. A large garden which is a great play area for kids. A fab place for a house party and would love to go back in the summertime.
It would be hard to find a better venue for a family party. Fifteen of us were meeting as a family for the first time in years to celebrate a 60th wedding anniversary. There was plenty of space for us to share our meals in the elegant dining room and to chat and relax in the living areas. The bedrooms were comfortable and there was certainly no need to queue for the many newly completed bathrooms. Larger numbers should check the availability and distribution of single and double beds and en-suite bathrooms to avoid conflict! The first floor rooms were easily accessible to our 80+ year old “honeymooners” because they can manage stairs.
The house has an interesting history and is being lovingly restored by its owners. There are still a few improvements to be made. The children enjoyed exploring the rambling gardens and we were able to play badminton and sit on the patio (when this appalling summer allowed!) but we imagine better garden furniture will soon be provided. An old pond and lavoir were revealed the week we were there. There was no internet access, though it was advertised.
The house is a few minutes walk from the shops and at least a couple of good eating places in the centre of Bricquebec. We had an excellent celebratory feast in the restaurant in the castle. It is a small town but busy on market day. There are beautiful beaches only 20 minutes drive away and it is not far to the historic Second World War beaches as well as Bayeux. We were able to meet family arriving in on the ferry at Cherbourg and the train at Valognes, just down the road, very easily.
We had an excellent week. The house is in a perfect setting near to the shops and only a short drive to the sea. The spacious rooms were ideal for a family ranging in ages from 5 months to 65 years. The modern bathrooms were especially appreciated and the dining room was just right for 13 of us.
And believe it or not, the sun shone every day despite terrible weather in the south of England.
This is an excellent property for a large group of you, as it has plenty of space to do your own thing, or for sharing meals in the large dining room. Excellently equipped kitchen with everything you need for dinner parties. The chateau has been beautifully and sympathetically restored. The grounds could probably do with a little tlc, but the children loved the garden as it was great for hiding, etc!! While we were there the town held St Anne's Festival and we were right in the midst of the celebrations, including a viking village in the town park right throught through the back gate of the chateau garden! Very pretty, rural area and a gorgeous, huge sandy beach only 20 minutes drive away at Carteret. All the shops, including the essential boulangeries are just a few minutes walk away, with a large supermarket a short drive up the road.
If you are a member of a cycle club and organise a trip we can offer special rates and ferry discounts, plus a gala dinner in the local chateau. Please call for details
A Classic Destination - in addition to being perfect for family holidays, La Palmeraie has secure off street parking in the grounds for more than 20 cars.
