Delightful 54 sq mtr holiday apartment in attractive MOZART village of St Gilgen, situated on shores of Lake Wolfgang in Austria's renowned lake district of Salzkammergut. This is 'SOUND OF MUSIC' land at its best, with 80 km of signposted walks, trails, traffic-free cycle paths & skiing. Tranquility & serendipity assured!

Good, comfortable sleeping accommodation for 4 persons, with 2 W.C./bathrooms. Well equipped galley kitchen. Spacious lounge & dining area furnished with custom-built traditional oak furniture. Seating for 6. FREE WiFi available for guests.

The sunny balcony has Alpine views of mountains & a cable car which runs from village centre to Zwolferhorn, 1541m. At the top, there's a splendid view of the famous Dachstein Glacier, lots of signposted walks and, when there is snow, a beautiful 7Km downhill pisted ski run through the trees. Also, as is common in Austria, you will find hospitable Mountain Inns for warming drinks / snacks / meals on most walking paths.

Historic Salzburg is a 30 minute drive away (or, 50 mins by bus). In Winter, it is good for WINTER WALKS, Tobogganing & Skiing.

St. Gilgen has several cafes to enjoy mouth-watering Austrian cakes, strudel, delicious hot chocolate or warming gluh-wein. There are restaurants offering the renowned local cuisine & freshly caught lake fish. Pizza restaurants also available.

It is a good holiday destination for sight-seeing, walking, lake cruising, cycling, scenic drives, Golf, fishing, boating, sailing, water skiing, canoeing, mountaineering, horse riding, Summer tobogganing & Paragliding. Many traffic-free cycle routes are available, including one round Lake Wolfgang.

Other ACTIVITIES:

St. Gilgen & its surrounds are excellent for a whole range of activities. Lake SWIMMING is popular with many attractive grass beaches and surprisingly warm water from mid-June to Oct. There are also two attractive, sheltered naturist sections. It is safe. Wolfgangsee's water is of near drinking quality.

A visit to the beautiful onion-domed church of St Aegidius in the village centre is recommended. Mozart's grandfather was buried here. His sister Nannerl & their mother lived in St Gilgen, as did Prof. Karl von FRISCH, the Nobel Prize winner, who discovered the language of bees.

5 popular activities are 1) the historic 11km PILGRIM WALK from St Gilgen to St. Wolfgang, returning to St Gilgen by regular boat ferry, 2) the funicular (cog) train ride up to Schafberg, 1783m - one of the engines is steam-powered, 3) Summer TOBOGANNING (rodelbahn) at Fuschl or Strobl, 4) renting an E-bike for lake-side cycling along cycle paths and quiet forested lanes and 5) the most popular, a ride to the top of Zwolferhorn by Cable Car.

Nearby, there are many visitor attractions, including the UNESCO world-heritage village of Hallstatt with its pretty houses, salt mines & ice caves. Nearby spa town of Bad Ischl, once a summer retreat of the Austrian Royal family, is a popular destination, with its world-famous thermal baths known for their healing properties. It also has indoor & outdoor saunas & jacuzzis with free aromatherapy, salt therapy, honey therapy on the hour in the evenings.

GOLF: There are 4 excellent golf courses in the area at Strobl, Fuschl, Bad Ischl and Mondsee.

For Winter: Many WALKS available for safe winter walking.

SKI INFO: St. Gilgen skiing is on Zwölferhorn reached by CABLE CAR from village centre with 7 km of piste. Beginners can use a 350m drag-lift , 500m from apartment. At HINTERSEE, 25 minutes away, there is 40 Km of piste, good family skiing & 2 ski schools. Ski area POSTALM with 50 Km of piste is 30 minutes by car.

Great flat

I loved the flat. It's really spacious and great value for money. It's brilliant in summer as there's so much to do: it's in walking distance of the beach, there's mini-golf, slides, walks around the lake, boat trips, tobogganing, water skiiing and wakeboarding, boat and canoe hire, you can take the cable car to the top of the mountain where there are amazing views and nice mountain restaurants, or you can take a train right to the top of an even higher mountain! It's great and you don't even need a car - we just got a bus from Salzburg airport.

I've been in winter too and it's really lovely, especially around Christmas time when they have an advent festival with a Christmas market, mulled wine, bands, etc. You need a hire car though to get to the ski lifts.

Overall it's a great flat and highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Another 5/5 rating. Splendid ! Rentals are indeed great value, half of the French Alps & English Lakes. As you found, its a superb location for lots of fun activities as well as for walking, sight-seeing, boat rides and skiing. There's also a bike hire place next to the mini-golf and many safe cycle paths - ask at the friendly tourist office for a map. The views from Zwolferhorn, 1521m ( on the right from the balcony ) and the spectacular Schafberg, 1783m ( on the left from the balcony ) are breath-taking. For good walkers, both are delightful full day walks. For a more relaxing ascent, take the cable-car & funicular respectively. The view from the peak at the top of Katrin cable car at Bad Ischl includes the majestic Dachstein Glacier. Travelling by bus from Salzburg airport is indeed very economical. Alternatively, the booking agent can provide the contact for a cost-competitive taxi service. Car-hire with easy car is also good value.

QUITE LOCATION WITH LOVELY VIEWS FROM THE PATIO

We stayed beginning of July, we loved the three different walks you could take down for the Apartment into the lovely St Gilgen which is about 15 mins up hill from the Apartment which is situated at the top of the hill in a quite location. On our arrival it was raining but warm, on entering the Apartment the windows and doors had been opened to air, it did smell a bit musky. There is a good size bathroom with a good shower and a toilet, with another toilet next door, which is a good idea, kitchen good size with lovely picture window up the hill, living room was comfortable, though this became a bedroom for our son, nice patio which does catch the sun in the morning, our bedroom felt completely different to the rest of the Apartment as it gets no sun and it felt quite cold making the bed feel like it was damp, it did help by putting a hot water bottle in morning and night, strange thing to do when it's 30 degrees outside, so as other reviewers have said, there is some challengers within the temperature of the flat, due to the high humidity and lack of sun in the bedroom. We did contact the owner and he allowed us to put the heating on in the room at no extra charge, Thank you Anup and he also explained that the previous people to stay before us had been a no show, so it had been empty. On the whole we did settle in and it was nice to have your own patio to sit out on in the evening and enjoy a glass or two of wine, whilst watching a fantastic thunderstorm or the warm evening when it had been a hot day. We hope the following guests who came in after us enjoyed the wine and little things we left in the fridge as we couldn't take them home with us, so we left them there for them to enjoy.

Great Stay in St Gilgen

A perfect location for spending time in the Salzgammergut and visiting Salzburg. The apartment was spacious, the kitchen better than adequate, lots of extra blankets and towels. The best part was having breakfast on the porch in the morning . The meet and great with Susan added a nice personal touch.

Nicely located apartment in a beautiful location

The apartment was just suitable for two persons stay. It is quite well equipped and bathroom and separate toilet are quite nice. The apartment was according the description, it was in a good condition. Also the village, the region and neighbouring villages were very beautiful. The owner was very helpful and provided good hints for activities in the region before and even during the stay. The only challenge we had was that during our stay the weather was cold and humid and therefore we had some challenges with the temperature of the rooms. But altogether, I can definitely recommend the apartment and it provides good price-quality relation.

You were unlucky to have rain on many days during your holiday, but you still managed to enjoy yourself with all that the area has to offer indoors - delightful shops, cafes, museums, concerts. With Salzburg & Bad Ischl so close by, there are many more attractions under cover. The 48/72 hour Salzburg Tourist Card is brilliant value since it includes entrance to 24 attractions such as Steigl brewery, Mozart's birthplace, Salzbug Zoo, Hohensalzbug Fortress, central Europe's biggest & world-class museums.

Spacious quiet apartment with scenic views

This alpine building is set on a steep slope backed by forest. The apartment is at the lowest end of the building nearest to the car park, and the entry is in the basement. It was clean, everything worked perfectly and the kitchen was well set up for self catering. The bedroom is large with big windows and the bathroom worked well. The balcony gets the morning sun and has great views towards the lake. We had a relaxing stay and St Gilgen has so much to see and do. The only thing that would had made it perfect would access to wifi.

this apartment is part of scompound and located up the hill opposite to st.gligen leack...surounding the apartment is a smsll forest ..the view is not really outstanding but quite nice...the furniture was apit old ..but the thing that I liked most was how every body was so friendly and helpfull...I recomend this glat for those who want to have a quite and practicle place close to st.glgen and wolfgang area.

Beautiful village of St Gilgen nestles on shores of Wolfgangsee in one of the loveliest lakes and mountains regions of Austria, Salzkammergut, 30 minutes by car from Salzburg airport or 2.5 hours by car or fast train from Munich airport.

It is a peaceful place, located on a gentle hill-side, 0.65 Km from village centre & Lake.

A bistro, a bakery, the Tourist Office ( with free Internet ), an ATM machine and a Spar supermarket are conveniently located at bottom of the residential area, 0.4 km on a quiet road or down some steps and a footpath alongside a lovely, cascading stream.

Village centre is a further 0.25 Km away. Fishing, boating, pedallos, sailing, water skiing, cruises, rowing, indoor/outdoor pool & sauna are available and the lake is lovely to swim in. Its water is of near drinking quality. Skiing is available in Winter.

A regular lake ferry connects St.Gilgen to nearby villages, the town of St Wolfgang & start of a cog railway up to “Schafberg” mountain (1783m) with splendid views, mountain cafes and good walking paths.

Next to the Tourist Office, catch a regular bus to Mozart’s birth place, SALZBURG ( 45 minutes ) or to spa town of Bad Ischl. Both have historical, musical & film (SOUND of MUSIC) connections.

From the sunny, south-facing balcony, one can see a range of mountains and “Zwolferhorn” (1541m), whose top can be reached by CABLE CAR (or walk in 3.5 hours) for a superb view of the Dachstein Glacier. There are inexpensive mountain inns at the top.

SKIING: A button lift for beginners is 0.5 KM from apartment & the cable car from village centre gives access to a 7 KM downhill run for experienced skiers. In nearby HINTERSEE, a 25 minute drive away, a ski school & over 40 km of pisted skiing is available. POSTALM, 35 mins away also has a ski school & 50 km of ski piste.
