4 Bedroom Cottage over looking village green in the heart of the Boyne Valley
About Karla Piner
I'm a furniture designer and have a passion for cleverly designed and beautifully made furniture and objects. I hope this passion comes across in Connell's House and Barn, which has been lovingly restored over the last two years. As well as designing furniture I also have a very keen interest in vernacular architecture both in Ireland and Scotland. I have worked on restoring many period properties during my career, but Connell's House & Barn is the first one I actually own! I am a very keen cook and love nothing more than cooking for my three young boys, lovely husband and extended family. I love gardening and I especially like growing vegetables and herbs. We lived in Scotland for ten years, before moving back to Ireland in 2012. We always spent our summer holidays travelling around England and Scotland, I adore both countries for their beautiful countryside, architecture and history. My all time favourite movie since I was a kid is Out of Africa (Robert Redford and Meryl Streep need I say more!) and my favourite Irish TV show is Dermot Bannon's Room to Improve. I love all kinds of food but my husband's fennel and butternut squash risotto is pure comfort food to me. I live twenty minutes from Connell Barn and House, so I'll always been on hand to help out guests and answer any queries. I'm very house proud, so the Barn will be squeaky clean when you arrive!
Karla Piner purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Karla Piner chose Duleek
Connell's House and Barn was a derelict building when my family acquired it. It is the oldest building in Duleek village and was in existence during the famous 'Battle of the Boyne' in 1690. The Connell family lived here for several generations, hence the name, and it holds many memories for the people in the village still to this day. It took two years to restore and re-build Connell's House and Barn and we are delighted to have saved this vernacular building for future generations to enjoy.
What makes this Cottage unique
This is a genuine period thatched cottage, but it has all the comfort and space of a modern home, whilst retaining the character of the original building. It is furnished with an eclectic style of furniture. It has really comfortable beds, good quality bed linen and great showers. A truly unique property!

Family of nine Americans
Karla has recreated a beautiful Irish cottage with first class touches everywhere. We will recommended it highly to extended family and friends. Great pubs and restaraunts close by. Great location for Dublin. Belfast and exploring County Meath.
Charming and cozy with such attention to detail!
My family and I had the pleasure of staying at Connell 's House for the last two nights of a magical, 10 day adventure in Ireland. We were interested in this home as it was conveniently located within approximately 30 minutes drive to Dublin Airport.
It is obvious that Karla has put her heart and soul in to the restoration of this thatched cottage. The attention to detail was apparent, and each room was cozy and comfortable.
There is also an outside seating area with gardens and picnic tables that are so just so lovely and inviting.
Communication with the host was timely and seamless, and the check-in process was simple and convenient.
The home was immaculate and had everything we could possibly need.
We especially liked the location of the cottage. It was within walking distance to a pub, where we spent a really fun evening making some new friends! There is also a wonderful supermarket within walking distance, and a restaurant called Tribe. Unfortunately, the restaurant was not open during the nights of our stay, but we met the owner and he was kind enough to give us a tour. The atmosphere is ABSOLUTELY beautiful, and the menu looks amazing!
I would not hesitate to book this cottage again!
Beautifully restored, perfect home to enjoy the Boyne Valley
This is our 14th visit to Ireland and this home has been an early highlight. Karla was very generous in preparing for our family’s special needs for the little ones and in sharing suggestions. And she kindly met with us to show us around the house.
Seeing the restoration photo book it was amazing to see how this home was brought back to life. It was comfortable, perfectly clean, with fully stocked kitchen, warmly and stylishly decorated, and a perfect location for exploring the Boyne Valley.
There is a new restaurant transformed from an old church called The Tribe right behind the house next to the Duleek Abbey ruins. It looks to be worth making a reservation. We will try it next time but took a little tour around it and it looks lovely.
This thatched roof cottage was a wonderful place to stay to complete our last three days in Ireland. It was comfortable for all six of us and very welcoming. Karla has thought of everything to make your stay a success. Specific instructions for everything. Near by restaurants and grocery shopping. Only 30 minutes from the airport, so very convenient. Karla is a very gracious hostess and very accessible for any questions or problems. I highly recommend this property.
Connell's House is ideally located for exploring the beautiful Boyne Valley, for example New Grange (Bru na Boinne) and The Battle of the Boyne museum is only 10 minutes away. These are just two nearby enchanting places to visit, other places of interest in the Boyne Valley are, Mellifont Abbey, Monasterboice Round Tower, High Crosses of Kells, Loughcrew Cairns, Trim Castle, Hill of Tara, Drogheda museum, Millmount Martello Tower amongst many other historical sites.
Tayto Park is only 20 minutes away, it's a great day out for the family as is Fantasia Waterpark in Drogheda.
Dublin city centre is a 40 minute drive, but it is also very accessible using public transport via the bus or train station in Drogheda, which is only a ten minute drive from Duleek village.
There are numerous golf courses in the local area, such as Bellewstown, Kileen Castle, Royal Tara, Headfort, Ashbourne, Baltray, Greenore, Seapoint, Ballymascanlon, Balbriggan and many others catering for all levels of ability.
