About Dave Coughlan
We are Pam and Dave Coughlan. We invite you into our private lake home for the simple reason that a place like this is too nice not to be enjoyed during the seasons. We can't be there all spring, summer and fall and it is a bit out of the way for long weekends( although we do that whenever possible ). We like that our children can go to the upper cabin and be away from the adults and can stay up later without bothering us. There is also room for other couples to have their privacy. We are still active in our shcool age children's lives and can't wait to have the time to stay at the cabin all the time.
Dave Coughlan purchased this Cabin in 2008
Why Dave Coughlan chose Orr
From the moment we walked onto the property we knew this was a special place. The old world log cabin made from hand hewn logs and a commanding fireplace with hand crafted, hand split granite stones. The walkways and the foundation rock all hand placed as well as the perimeter stone wall. A gentle slope goes down a pavement stone walkway to the beach and boathouse and onto the floating dock. Medium grain sand on the beach with an outdoor fire pit for evening fires. It has everything we want and need to enjoy the up north Minnesota experience.
What makes this Cabin unique
The log cabin on lake vermilion is the reminiscence of the movie ' on golden pond ' the sunsets give a color to the lake that glows yellow, pink and orange and the clouds set the light and mood for the whole day. The night sky is so clear that the milky way is looks like a cloud of stars and its even brighter during the aurora, or northern lights shine forth. Enjoy the quiet, peaceful stay at our 'slice of heaven'

We enjoyed our stay on Vermilion in these 2 cabins. We had more than enough room and it gave us the "up north" cabin feel we were looking for. We enjoyed a peaceful week with the kids.
Very Nice Place
I was very happy with the cleanliness of the cabins when we arrived and the cabins were very well stocked with kitchen items. As a fisherman I loved having the sink inside the garage to be able to clean fish without the disturbing mosquito's. The view from the screen porch in the main cabin is wonderful a great place for large groups to just hang and play games. I will definitely consider this place again. Dave the owner is a great guy and very eager to help in any way.
Private lakefront with cozy charm
The main cabin is older log with a wonderful stone fireplace. It’s tucked up a slight hill and there are a few steps to and from the dock. The second cabin is up another hill behind the mai cabin with quite a few more stairs. The boat ramp is convenient for unloading your boat next door yet you stay secluded with woods separating you from the ramp area. The parking at the cabin is large enough you can bring your boat trailer over once you unload and tie your boat at the cabins private dock. The cabin is well supplied with utensils. The kitchen is tiny but there is dining space on the screened patio over looking the lake, as well as a small table near the kitchen. The cabin Bedrooms are small, we didn’t spend much time in them anyway. The lake is much too pretty to be inside. There is WiFi if you need it. It’s not handicap accessible or someplace I’d recommend for those with limited mobility. The second cabin has a larger kitchen and also a small dining space in the screened porch. The cabin is newer and has multiple beds in the rooms. Great for families with kids who can share. There is a tv in the main cabin and a box of dvd, however we never turned it on. I don’t think you get any reception. The cabins are a ways from town so load up your supplies ahead of time. The little beach area has a fire pit and there are chairs and a picnic table. We love this place. We have stayed here 3 times and enjoyed every day.
Wonderful property for family gathering.
Our family of seven rented this property Aug.13-20, 2016. We loved our week and were very impressed with the property. Both cabins are clean, spacious and well appointed. Having two cabins allowed all our family members to sleep in a bedroom. The main cabin is beautiful and the quintessential northern Minnesota "lake place." The large screen porch overlooking the lake was the main attraction, and where we spent the majority of our family time - meals, games and just relaxing. Having the master bedroom open to the screen porch was great, as it felt like sleeping outside. The grounds were beautiful and spacious, with plenty of room for multiple cars and boat trailers. The large garage was very handy, with room to store water toys and other supplies, and an extra fridge for beer, wine, ice and bait. There is also plenty of sturdy dock space for multiple boats - we docked an 18' runabout and a '22 pontoon with no difficulty.
We were also very impressed with how quiet the area was. Located between a small public access and the Life of Riley resort, there was very little boat traffic, noise or other activity - perfect. (Note that the shoreline is not conducive to swimming. The area is fairly shallow (3'-5') and weedy. Was of no concern to our group as we simply headed out to the midde of the bay on the pontoon.) The property is a 15 minute boat ride from the far west end of Lake Vermilion and the Landing restaurant and Moosebirds convenience store, with large three-scoop ice cream cones!
It was a great week at a wonderful cabin. We would definitely return.
Pictures don't do this cabin justice !
Location! it's very quiet at the cabins they don't have the boat traffic of the main lake it also couldnt be closer to the boat launch which was a positve for us! dock space is not an issue here we had 3 boats with plenty space for more if needed... The cabins were perfect slept 12 with ease the sceen porches were we a huge benefit as well. Another positve for our group was the kids had a nice big beach to play at with swim shoes on (little rocky but hey its lake vermilion) the kayaks and paddle boat kept them busy for hours
Pleasantly surprised upon arrival because the pictures don't do this cabin justice. Nice and quiet location and secluded, with lots of room for small kids to play outdoors. Just wish we had access to the sauna, maybe next time.
This is a log cabin in the remote area of Lake Vermilion. Its rustic charm and peaceful setting gives you a reminder that the best things in life are simple...But ...with all the comforts of home.
Drive your own boat in and out of the "on water" boathouse after a great day of fishing or exploring the 40,000 acre+ Lake Vermilion with its 365 islands. Wild blueberries are abundant and picking is at its best in late July and early August.
If you enjoy golf, there are three public courses within 1 hour that are rated in the top 100 public golf courses in america...The Legends and the Quarry in Biwabic, MN and The Wilderness at Fortune Bay Casino in Tower MN.. There are also three 9 hole executive courses within 20 miles. Vermilion Fairways between the town of Cook and the cabin, The Vermilion River Greens on the Crane Lake road and a delightful course called Wolf Ridge between Cook and Virginia MN.
Local musical entertainment on the lake can be enjoyed at the Wolf Bay Lodge near the Vermilion River Dam and at The Landing, at the end of Wakemup Bay. Both places serve cocktails and good food if your not in the mood to cook.
The northern part of Minnesota is a rugged landscape of rock outcrops, pines and grassy lowlands. There are many trails to take you hiking back into the woods on state and county lands. The trails are wide and very scenic. But, stay on the trails. Getting lost is a real danger in these remote woods.
Small boats are available from the owner to explore the rugged shores, islands where you can discover hidden sandy beaches.
Fishing on lake vermilion is amazing. There are large fish in this large lake. Muskellunge, northern pike, walley, large and small mouth bass are plentiful in the bay in front of the cabin. Crappies, sun fish and perch can be caught right off the docks.
This cabin and guest house arrangement is like a small resort onto its own. The stone work in the walkways and rock walls surrounding this 1930's log cabin add a character of quality and history. The fireplace is an old world stone hearth fireplace that adds character and comfort. Once you see this place you'll agree..It is special.
