Douro Mountain House with spetacular vews

Bedrooms 1
Space 1,237 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

1 bedroom, 1 bathroom sleeps 4

Casa da Montanha, (Mountain house) is located in a farm close to the Douro Valley were the Port Wine is produced, (12 km) that has been recently recognized by Unesco as world heritage. Close by are historical villages, medieval monasteries, and a fascinating medieval village almost intact since the 12th century. Being so close to the river Douro this makes possible for visitors to envoy trips by boat on the river including the visit to wine cellars. This property that covers 8 acres, lawns, shrubs, and trees most of them oak, has been in my family for the last 200 years, the house is located at 750 metres high with a spectacular view over a beautiful valley facing a mountain of great beauty. Sitting in the garden or by the pool, gazing the view, breathing fresh air, it's a great place to relax due to the fact of being totally isolated in nature, the nearest house is the owners house at a distance of 60 metres .

We wanted a place to get away from it all. We couldn't have found a better place if we'd searched for years and years.

The pictures on the web site don't do justice to seeing the real thing.

The owner Jose is a lovely guy who would do anything he could to make your stay the best it could be.

The cottage has everything you need for that stress free holiday your looking for, Satellite TV (but to be honest the view out of the window is far better than anything on the TV) Good Internet connection, Swimming pool is spotless, the cottage is well situated for travelling to all the beautiful places around. But after being out getting back to the cottage is never a disappointment, just get yourself a glass of wine or a beer and sit on the patio by the pool and watch the sun go down listening to the bird song all around you, before going down into Lamego for a lovely meal at one of the many restaurant/bars.

I hope this review gets across how much we enjoyed our stay there, but don't take my word for it, just book it and experience it for yourself.

Ps. Jose if you want a maintenance man to look after the place for you, just give me a call I'll be there as fast as I can.

A hideaway gem in the Rio Douro

  • 5 of 5

The mountain house commands a magnificent view from the living room and the furnishings and fittings throughout are excellent for a pronged stay. The swimming pool is kept spotlessly clean and by mid afternoon comfortably warm. The phone, Wi-fi and TV receptions are good. The extensive grass area and flower beds around the house are well kept and the steep paved track down from the road above is soon mastered. The location of the farmhouse is convenient for shopping in/visiting beautiful Lamego and exploring historic sites, boat cruises and rail excursions in the Rio Douro and for port wine tasting. The landlord, Jose, who lives in a farmhouse nearby is exceedingly hospitable, obliging and speaks excellent English. I strongly recommend a stay at this hideaway and I shall return myself before long. Sandy

Our stay in the Douro Mountain House was wonderful. Firstly, our host, Jose couldn't have been more helpful. We found a kindred spirit in him and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with him. In saying that if you want time, just to yourself, do not be put off by my words as he is completely non - invasive and respectful of privacy! The cottage is tastefully restored, comfortable, and the view is stunning. The pool is lovely. It is a great starting point for exploring the region, particularly the Douro Valley which is a not too far drive away. If you wish for a holiday purely to unwind, then the cottage and garden are wonderful for relaxing, lazing around and reading. Enjoy your stay in Jose's beautiful cottage!

Beautiful cottage and views

  • 5 of 5

Jose gave great directions to Lamego and met us there, where we followed him the short drive to the mountain house. It is exactly like it is in the pictures, stunning views across the valley and a very quaint stone cottage! Kitchen has an electric hob with space for 4 pans, a microwave, kettle and toaster, as well as a fridge with small freezer compartment. Pool was clean and we used it a lot as it was very hot in July! There was a nice breeze most days and it really was very peaceful. The town of Lamego is an easy 10 minute drive where there are supermarkets and some restaurants. There are also lots of other attractions nearby including the medieval village of Ucanha. There are maps and guidebooks and an activity guide in the cottage which was very helpful, as well as a TV with satellite channels. Jose was a great host, nothing was too much to ask and we were grateful for his tips and help throughout our stay. The cottage was spotlessly clean and the shower had fantastic water pressure! I would definitely recommend the mountain house to couples looking to get away from it all, was a stress free holiday and nice not to have to fight for a sun lounger by the pool each day like we normally do in hotels! There is enough to do in the area to keep you busy as well which is great. Again, thanks Jose for a great stay!

Could do better for the price

  • 3 of 5

This is a very nice cottage with excellent views. However, we were paying peak season rates, which are quite high for the area and there were a number of issues. The shower holder was broken, the grass around the pool hadn't been cut, and then we had no hot water for the last two days because of a problem with the boiler while the owner was away in Porto, for which we were only offered possible compensation on a future visit. I was very disappointed not to be offered a partial refund for this major inconvenience. There are plenty of other places to stay for less money.

Owner's Response: It is true that the grass mower broke and it had to be taken way to be fixed reason why the grass was not cut. I had to be way in Porto for health reasons for two days and during that time the boiler stoped working. These things unfortunatly do happen and I had the oportunity to inform the guests that they were absolutly right for beeing descontented with this situation and ofered them a compensation, however I had no response. It is not true that you find houses in the área for better price with a private swiming pool. This is all I have to say to this coment, regreting deeply what happened.

The Mountain house is located in the mountain region that involves the Douro Valley, were Port Wine is produced. This surrounding area is considered as the treasure of Portuguese Medieval architecture heritage. In this region you can visit a considerable number of Norman churches and Cistercians Monasteries dating from early middle ages. The house is at 15 minutes distance of reasonable good restaurants as well as a big supermarket. Placed at 135 km from the iconic city of Oporto.
