Delightful old farmhouse and garden in a picturesque village

  • 4 of 5

The house is big, well-appointed and equipped, and the rooms characterful. The garden is lovely, with several shady corners as well as a largeish lawned area. The swimming pool is on the small side but we had great fun in it.

We ate outside most evenings at the large table on the terrace - but we needed insect repellent as the area has tiger mosquitoes - not dangerous but they bite a lot.

The shops, restaurants and markets of Pernes are a short walk away and there is plenty to see and do in the region.

Altogether, a very enjoyable holiday indeed.

We had a lovely time in Mas St Martin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two weeks over July-August 2014. We had never been to the south of France and had not stayed before in what is essentially a home (as opposed to a holiday villa). We also had some quite specific requirements: my wife’s mother wanted temperatures of above 25 degrees, the children wanted a pool, we did not want to have to hire a car as we never really use it and we all wanted some nice food! Our stay in Pernes delivered all of these things. There was plenty of space in the house for us all and there is everything you need in the kitchen (when in the south of France how can you not cook a daube of beef?) We were met by Maggie on behalf of the owner but we were also in email contact with the owner and on the odd occasion that something needed to be sorted, it was done very quickly. The garden is spacious and private – the olive trees were particularly nice.

Pernes is a lovely little town with two supermarkets, loads of bakeries along with cake shops and butchers. A car makes life easier without a doubt but we used the local bus service to go to Carpentras and it was no effort. There is also a very good tourist information centre in the town where they are very helpful. The market on Saturday morning is excellent (as is the Carpentras one) and there is a smaller market on Wednesday evening. There is a range of restaurants of varying degrees of quality (price), we especially liked the Cote de Jardin. France is on a par with the UK price-wise, chicken is a bit more expensive but the wine is taxed less and is wonderfully cheap by comparison to back home. Twice a day we would stroll out to get fresh bread from the bakery which is a couple of hundred yards away.

If you are interested in wildlife then it is worth noting that several species of butterfly were regularly in the garden along with Jersey Tiger Moth and the famous cicada. Overhead, we had Short-toed Eagle, Hobby, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Common Buzzard and Bee-eater with a roller from the taxi just outside Pernes! In the spring I would imagine that it would be great for birds (car may be required to maximise on this interest).

We had a great time and you can see a few pictures of the house and Pernes on Flickr

sejour de rêve

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5
