About Mara Welker
Growing up in the central valley town of Davis, a trip to the ocean was a special treat. My Mother loved the beach so we spent many a weekend at different locations. We played - she read. As a kid I never understood how whe could sit and read while we ran around. Lets just say I do now! Upon finishing college I moved to the inland town of Willits, where I raised my children and have now been living there for 37 years.
Mara Welker purchased this House in 2005
Why Mara Welker chose Fort Bragg
My family purchased this property after our Mothers death as a place for us to gather and enjoy the Sea. With my Moms love of the ocean instilled in us it seemed appropriate to create a family space for us to share that gave us access to good seaside times. This house and property was our choice.
What makes this House unique
The minute we saw this home we knew this was the spot. We love the quiet location, large lot and asthetic look. The old fashioned theme of the home was a draw and we love all the modern ammentitis. It is nice to be near the ocean (about 1 mile) yet still have lots of sun. We also find it handy to be so close to town (approx 1 mile) with all of its markets, stores, and restaurants.

A Perfect Stay
The location, cleanliness, arrangement of rooms and furniture, and communications with the owner were all perfect! We enjoyed every aspect of our stay, and we look forward to a return visit.
Short stay, but very comfortable
This was a great property, had everything we needed and was close to town and local attractions. We were on a very busy schedule due to wedding and didn't get to see much of the area, however the house made for a comfortable stay and we were able to relax when we were there. Thank you so much for letting us stay in your house.
Very cute house. Very pleasant place to stay!
We loved this house. Kids loved running around. Close to the beach, and stores. Very clean. Beautiful house.
Great time, our family loved this home!
Absolute communication with no problems and easy access!
Perfect home for large family or three couples. Would gladly return.
Serene setting but great for kids
Had a wonderful time! Saw five deer in front yard first morning. Kids loved running around the grass. Great location. Lots of thoughtful touches. Better than most we have stayed in. Thanks! :)
There are so many great things to do on our coast.
The Skunk Train is an excursion train (both diesel and Steam) that winds through the redwoods along the Noyo River to the destination of Northspur which is part way to Willits. There are open and closed cars so your ride will be comfortable no matter what the weather. Many specialized excursions are done seasonally. Check their scedule.
The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is a true gem. Its 47 acres go from Hwy 1 to the oceans edge. It is located about 1.5 miles south of Hwy 20 in Ft. Bragg. There is a seasonal restaurant plus plants for sale. At Christmas time the Festival of Lights is located there with the front part of the garden lit in beautiful and fanciful lights. Don't miss rhododendron and Dalia Seasons!!
Village of Mendocino- Quaint historic village with numerous shops, restaurants, and galleries. There is a wonderful walk from town north along the Mendocino Headlands State Park.
Van Damme State Park - Hiking and a cove for diving, snorkeling and kyacking.
Russian Gulch State Park - Ocean access and hike to an all season waterfall
Jughandle State Park - Ocean access and geological staircase hike.
Casper State Beach - Protected cove great for beginning surfers, kyackers. Great beach for kids.
Big River State Park - Good river for canoeing and Kyacking. Beautiful long beach accessible from the village of Mendocino.
MacKerricher State Park - Boardwalk trail to whale and sea lion watching and tide pools. The Haul road trail runs through it.
Glass beach is a unique beach that one time was a garbage dump. Although this sounds horrible it is really quiet pretty and interesting. In the cliffs are bits of twisted metal and the beach is coated with polished sea glass. Please look but don't take home. It is located on the north end of town.
Pt. Cabrillo lighthouse is a lighthouse built in 1908 that is still used today. From the parking lot to the lighthouse is a .5 mile walk but it is paved and gentle. Well worth the walk. There is a great museum and gift shop with other displays as well.
The Ft Bragg Haul Road is a leftover from bygone days when logging trucks used to haul logs up and down the coast on their own road. Today it is a asphalt/gravel road that is for bikes and hikers. It is mostly flat so is great for a family bike excursion but still enjoyable for more serious riders. The views of the ocean are spectacular. The road goes from several miles north of McKerricher State Park all the way to Noyo Harbor on the south edge of Ft. Bragg.
Bikes can be rented at Catch a Canoe just south of the Village of Mendocino and Ft, Bragg Cyclery.
