Next to the train station Atocha Renfe and access to all kinds of public transport (metro, bus , commuter rail, bus airport express 24h) lies this nice apartment, bright and quiet, perfect for families, couples , friends and lovers of urban tourism , as it is located a few minutes walk or public transport of all cultural centers such as museums : Museo Thyssen Bornemisza , Reina Sofia , Museo del Prado, Caixa Forum, Teatro Price, etc. . and Retiro Park , Puerta del Sol , Plaza Mayor, etc. . It is located in a privileged area because you can walk to the famous Rastro of Madrid ( outdoor market ) that takes place every Sunday and you can also try both tapas and enjoy your nightlife in the neighborhood of La Latina, Plaza Mayor or Lavapies and its famous ' neighborhood of the letters ' also known as ' gardens' .

Safety is a Concern

This 3rd floor apartment is an "end unit" in a 4 story building, in a commercial district, that is "sandwiched" in between others like it. . . with no "fire escapes", and no streets, or even alleys, in between. We saw no fire safety sprinklers or other equipment in the building. There is a gap in the top floor roof that is about 3 feet wide to allow some sunlight and air in to dry clothes that are hung on long lines in the center of the building.

Our safety concern is that a high percentage of people in Madrid smoke. In the event of a fire, the few exits provided would not allow all those living in this building to reach safety. Because, while this is an "end" apartment with French doors in the living/dining area. . (no windows in the second bedroom or bathroom). . . the neighboring, "interior' apartments (about 8 on each floor) have only one exit from their home. Those apartments have no windows/French doors. . . no direct natural light, at all, in their homes.

We were told this is the normal way of living in this part of Madrid. We noticed there are blocks and blocks of buildings with zero space between them. Where many people live above shops and even restaurants in such hazardous situations. Learning of the tragic fire in London. . . has made us more alert to such safety issues in large cities.

Otherwise, this small apartment was reasonably comfortable, clean, and in a convenient location. The dining table can be opened up to comfortably seat "four". . . not more. The television is very old, almost non-functional, and needs to be replaced.

Anyone thinking about inviting friends to join them and sleep in the second bedroom, for even one night, should check ALL the additional fees and add them up. We found those fees to be over the top, and unjustifiable. When we tried to come to a reasonable compromise, with Barbara, regarding the fees, we found her to have a quick temper, to be rude, and to be completely inflexible. Her negative review for us as guests is a reflection of her vindictiveness.

We are certainly responsible people who left the place in good order, tidy, and clean. Because of her negative attitude, we took the precaution of taking photos of the apartment right before we left. . . in case she refused to return our security deposit. Since it has now been returned, we can be honest in our review.

Excellent location in Madrid - near museums. Well managed by owner

This is an excellent location for walks, within minutes, to the Reina del Sofia Museum/Museo and El Prado and the Botanical Garden. A few minutes farther and you are at Retiro Park. Within a 15-minute or more walk is Plaza Mayor and other markets, great restaurants, and adjacent neighborhoods. The VRBO itself is spacious and quiet. We were a family of three visiting in late March. Our daughter went for early morning runs in Retiro Park. At night, we walked down the street to a nearby fruit vendor or a grocer store or the bakery - all doors away. The neighborhood is safe and close to the bus, train station and metro. There's even a taxi stand right in front of the VRBO lobby entrance. The owner Barbara is wonderful. She answered all of our questions in the weeks prior to our visit. When we had a question or two about the apartment, while we were there, she answered immediately and even stopped by, as she lives nearby. She is an excellent business person and cares about the upkeep of the apartment, but also the satisfaction of those who stay there as VRBO clients. The kitchen had lots of room for food preparation; the bathroom was spacious. The two bedrooms and living room were just right for what we needed. If we ever come back to Madrid, we would want to stay here in this VRBO again. Thank you, Barbara.

Exactly what we hoped for...

Stayed for a weekend. 5 mins walk from the Atocha train station. Barbara was there waiting for us. Perfectly located near all of the attractions. Great stay!

lovely and convenient Madrid apartment

Barbara's apartment is well located near museums, restaurants, grocery stores and parks as well as two metro stations. We walked most places. An added plus was that our daughter's apartment was down the block. Barbara was quick to respond to my questions before we arrived and during our stay. She was warm and friendly. The apartment had two bedrooms and the living area was big enough for the three of us and for four when our daughter came over. I would highly recommend it.

Great location for us. Barbara was the perfect host.

We were very happy with the apartment. It worked well for three people. The location to a Metro station and Atocha were perfect. Barbara was a great host and checked to ensure that all was going well and responded quickly to any questions we had. We would return to this location again.
