The apartment “La Scuola”, with the entrance directly from the outside, it is a stylish four-room ideal for 6 persons, very ample and comfortable, it has typical fired brick floors and ancient furniture. The apartment has a living/dining-room with a fireplace and cooking area furnished with the dishwasher, 2 double bedrooms, a twin-bedded room, 2 bathrooms one with the bath the other with a shower. The swimming-pool, with a magnificent view, is very near the apartment.
It is difficult to establish exactly the date of the ancient Benedictine monastery, the first official document is of the year 1191 and it is a proclamation of the Emperor Enrico VI, but probably the abbey and the church are much more ancient, this can be corroborated by the structure of the church, the capitals and some decorations.
In the ancient monastery, wisely restored in order to maintain the original charm, there are three stylish apartments completely independent one from the other. In the ample lawn large 5000 square metres there is a beautiful sunny swimming-pool (16m x 8m; and 120cm deep) that discovers a wonderful view; all around there is a big lawn and a solarium fitted out with natural big stones, the clients can use the deckchairs, the garden tables and the beach umbrella. A big changing-room, with showers and separate areas for men and women, is near the swimming-pool.
Not far from the monastery, included in the same property, there are two ancient country houses, one of them is 1 km far from the abbey and the other is 2.5 km far. Also these were wisely restored, divided into apartments that maintain the original charm, they are well furnished and have an ample area all around; the nature, the quiet and the context are peculiarity that grant a relaxing holiday.
The farm is 660 hectares large and it is cultivated with woods, pastures, fit for sowing. In the farm there are cattle-breeding of great value: “Chianina” cows and TPR horses. There is a game preserve where it is possible to hunt wild boars, hares and roe deers. The area is also rich in fine white truffle and it is possible to organize explorations with the dogs in the farm.
The area is particularly interesting, the beautiful town of Gubbio is just 15 minutes far. Easily reachable are: Città di Castello, Sansepolcro, Perugia, Urbino, Arezzo, Fabriano, Cortona, Assisi and many others.
Many activity are in this area, the Monte Cucco Natural Park offers several occasions of excursions, caving, free-fly, horse riding; not far it is also possible to practice golf and tennis.
The San Benedetto Vecchio Abbey is a charming estate that is part of the local history. Those that spend here some days cane taste the ancient atmosphere.
When one spends his days in a place like this, the other part of the world seems very far. . The apartments preserve the original charm without renounce to the modern comfort. The location, the closeness to the interesting places both for the nature and the tourism, the very near road network that permit to joint the mean towns of Umbria, Marche and Tuscany, are very important elements for those that look for relaxing, cultural and active moments in their holidays.

We spent a wonderful week at this medieval monastery in a beautiful location with views across the valley. The monastery sits in the hills a short drive from Pietralunga, with a wonderful swimming pool perched on the hill side.
Our host Max was most welcoming, and we felt at home straight away, with proper old fashioned Italian hospitality. There are four apartments. We were in “La Scuola”. It is a beautifully restored apartment, where you feel steeped in history, with all the modern conveniences.
It is not the place to come if you are looking for hustle and bustle. It is tranquil and peaceful, with a car passing every 15 minutes or so at rush hour. The only people we came across apart from the locals were the odd small groups of pilgrims who were on walking holidays and came to see the Abbey as they were passing.
We spent a lot of time at the pool, which has a magnificent location overlooking the area. It is really well looked after and a joy to use, with facilities better than many of the best hotels, and it was cleaned and tended to on a daily basis. The changing rooms are impressive. The pool is a minute walk from the apartment, across the road, which worried me at first as we have a young child, but there is so little traffic and you can hear it coming from so far away in this peaceful countryside, that the road is not an issue.
The pool has no shallow end, which is something to consider if you have young children who cannot swim, but it proved to our advantage, as our little one started swimming properly here. It was sink or swim and she was ready. Fantastic!
You need a car to get here and to get about. It was a 15 minute drive to the nearest town – Pietralunga, which is a great place to visit with some good places to eat and a COOP, and an hour to Gubbio, a beautiful medieval market town.
There are great advantages to travelling a little further away from Tuscany. The towns and countryside are unspoiled by tourism. You get so much more for your money, and people are generally more welcoming and open away from the tourist traps. In fact, when we travelled back towards Pisa, our stay in a hotel was marred by miserable service and an over-priced hotel. This only reinforced how wonderful Abbazia San Benedetto really is.
We said our goodbyes and thank you to Max and I said I would not leave a review on Homeaway, as we wanted to keep this place a secret. However, I can’t help but recommend this magical place to you. We will be back!
The apartment is spacious, clean and renovated in style. The location is perfect and unique (abbey). The pool is lovely, with plenty of sun loungers. We had two wonderful weeks.

From the clearway E45, also called SS3bis, take the exit “Gubbio” and drive on the SS219, once arrived at Mocaiana turn left on the road SP205 taking Pietralunga direction, after 9km from the crossroad there is Abbadia San Benedetto.
The apartment is located in a place particularly suggested to those that want very relaxing holidays and desire to visit interesting towns. It is very closed to the lovely little town of Gubbio where it is possible to visit the Roman theatre, the Consuls Palace, the Duke’s Palace, the Cathedral and the wonderful big square. Gubbio is also famous for its ancient handcrafts (pottery, wrought iron, leather) and the historical events like the Crossbow Palio and the Ceri Race. Just behind Gubbio, for those that love nature, there is the Natural Park of Monte Cucco that offers excursions of different difficulties, caving, canyoning, a school of free fly, horseback rides and mountain-bike rides. The position of Abbadia San Benedetto is very good also to visit important destinations like Perugia, Urbino, Città di Castello, Sansepolcro, Anghiari, Cortona, Arezzo, Fabriano.
