wonderful apartment

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here in this apartment for one week in late March, 2016. We both loved this apartment. It is spacious, light-filled, well decorated, clean, comfortable (very comfortable bed) and the kitchen is well equipped.

I loved Lucca. The city is big enough to be vibrant, yet small enough to walk to anywhere inside the wall. As noted in other reviews, this apartment is in quiet, residential section of town and is near a gate for easy entry. Walking on the wall was a great afternoon treat. After two weeks of visiting hill towns, I was in love with flat Lucca. It is not the most beautiful city in Italy, but it has a feeling about it that is open, accessible and inviting.

There are small grocery stores within the wall and a large supermarket outside the wall (near the free parking lot). A small suburban area surrounds the city.

The only downside to this rental is that renters cannot enter through the gates with their cars. This restriction means that you can't drive in to load/unload. You can park in a paid parking lot that is about a 10 minute walk (be warned, however, that you must put money in the meter by 8:00 am each day), or park in a free lot another 5 minutes' walk beyond the paid lot. We parked in the free lot. There were a lot of spaces. It's near the cemetery.

There are buses from Lucca that go just about anywhere that you might want to visit. We took a trip to Pisa by bus (about a half hour), which was much better than trying to find parking there.

There is also a train station just outside the wall on the southern side of town.

We did not meet the owner because he was away that day; however, he arranged for someone to meet us at the apartment.

Very comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This property is very clean, good sheets, good lighting, very near the Lucca wall. The furniture is simple, clean lines, just what you want in a vacation rental. GianMarco is a kind man who met at the train station and also drove us back to catch our train to Florence. GianMarco gave us restaurant tips and was easily available for questions. What we particularly liked about this property, and is rare in vacation rentals, is the lack of clutter and owners personal items. We would most defiantly recommend this apt.

Ottima posizione, cortesia e appartamento spazioso! Ottimo per il periodo di Lucca Comics

  • 5 of 5

A quiet and well equipped apartment

  • 4 of 5

My sister and I spent 10 days in this quiet and well equipped apartment. It is in a residential area and there are no bars in the little square so it was not noisy at night. Cars do drive past in this area but in Lucca they go very slowly and did not disturb us. The apartment was clean and in good condition. It is close to Lucca's famous walls and we enjoyed walking and cycling along the walls in the shade of the trees. The owner was very kind and helpful and met us at the bus station to accompany us to the apartment. Thank you GianMarco for facilitating a lovely stay in Lucca!

Yes, it is fantastic walk and bike over the Mura, seeing the red roof in "cotto" and all the churches' towers. I really hope to have you again in Casa bella: you've been wonderful guests! Lucca is a city and municipality in Tuscany, central Italy, situated on the river Serchio in a fertile plain near the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is the capital of the province of Lucca. Among other reasons, it is famous for its intact Renaissance walls.

Lucca was founded by the Etruscans (there are traces of a pre-existing Ligurian settlement) and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The rectangular grid of its historical center preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the amphitheater can still be seen in the Piazza of the amphitheater.

Lucca was the second largest Italian city state (after Venice) with a republican constitution ("common") to remain independent over the centuries. In 1805, Lucca was conquered by Napoleon, who installed his sister Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi as "Queen of Etruria". After 1815 it became a Bourbon-Parma duchy, then part of Tuscany in 1847 and finally part of the Italian state.

The walls around the old town remained intact as the city expanded and modernized, unusual for cities in the region. As the walls lost their military importance, they became a pedestrian promenade which encircled the old town, although they have been used for a number of years of the twentieth century for racing cars. They are still fully intact today; each of the four principal sides is lined with a different species.

The Academy of Sciences (1584) is the most famous of several academies and libraries.
