Trullo Azzurro: historic beauty in fantastic setting

Bedrooms 4
Space 1,506 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 6 nights

About the property

Historic trullo in peaceful countryside, 30 mins from beaches, sleeps 8-10

Amazing, tranquil, spectacular are just some of the words that previous guests have used to describe Trullo Azzurro and its settings. It is a beautiful trullo which we lovingly restored and maintain, employing traditional methods and materials to retain its magical character. And now with a newly installed 18ft x 9ft above ground pool.

Trullo Azzurro is composed of two fully-equipped, conjoined houses and sleeps 8-10 people - ideal for two families or larger groups. In quieter periods it may be possible to rent just one part of the house to sleep 4 - please enquire. The left side of the property is more traditional in style and sleeps 4-6. It has 5 trullo cones composing 2 bedrooms (a double and a twin), lounge with a double sofa bed that can be screened off to create an additional bedroom, kitchen/dining room and bathroom with a shower. The right side of the property is partly lamia (used to be storage) and partly traditional trullo, sleeps 4. This is more modern in style, has two bedrooms in the trullo cones (a double and a twin), lounge/ dining room, well-equipped kitchen including dishwasher and washing machine, bathroom with bath and shower. Twin beds can be made up as doubles if required. One travel cot available. For those that cannot leave the computer behind, there is wifi. The property is surrounded by a garden with olive and fig trees, an enclosed south-facing courtyard and a back patio both paved with traditional old paving stones. There are sun loungers and umbrellas for relaxing; barbecues, garden tables and chairs for al fresco dining. It is situated on the west facing slope of a delightfully quiet valley with wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. 30 minutes by car from fantastic beaches. A great place for relaxing away from it all, whilst being ideally located for exploring the sights of Puglia.

About Mary Galashan

Owners are Mary and Mark. We are currently living and working in SE England but spending as much time in Italy as possible. We have just bought an apartment in nearby Cisternino and so are now able to offer both parts of Trullo Azzurro as a holiday rental.

Mary Galashan purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Mary Galashan chose Bari

We bought Trullo Azzurro primarily because it was so unspoiled. The ancient structures are as they were when first built and not enclosed in square walls as many other trullo are. Secondly was its location - a beautiful, secluded valley where often the only sounds you hear are bird song and cow bells.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We spent one week in Trullo from 27.04-04.05. We were lucky with the weather. At this time of the year it was very comfortably warm during the day however nights might be cold. The property is equipped with fireplace and electric heaters which we used only the first night. The car is a must as the Trullo is located in the very rural area. All nearby towns are located within 20-30 min drive. Trullo is a very unique experience and gives a feeling how people lived there in the past. Built from stone Trullo azzurro is equipped in all necessities: kitchen, bathrom, sofas in the day room, tv, plus two bedroms. Trullo azzurro has been renovated recently and is very clean. There are lot of places to visit and after one week you wish you stayed longer. The owners prepared great reception at the arrival: pasta, tea, coffee, water, wine so you do not have to worry about food if you arrive late. Uppon arrival you do not directly the Trullo but to Cisternino where you will meet the Local agent who will guide you to the property.

A perfect holiday from start to finish.

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this holiday was perfect. The beautiful well appointed Trullo, the stunning and welcoming local towns, the amazing countryside, the lovely beaches and the brilliant weather. (Oh and the delicious local wine for 1.80euro a litre..) We wanted for nothing at the Trullo, everything was thought of and the welcome pack of pasta and sauce was very much appreciated after a long drive.

My young daughter loved the pool, my in-laws loved exploring the surrounding area and my wife enjoyed just relaxing and taking in the views.

I can't wait to go back, I have fallen in love with Italy

comfortable trullo for unique holiday experience

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful, well-appointed trullo in a tranquil setting with wonderful views over the vine and olive covered hills.

The trullo is furnished to a high standard, and has all mod cons - washing machine, dishwasher, toaster, tv, dvd, wifi,. The sheets were beautifully ironed on arrival and and there were lots of towels provided for both bath and beach.

Everything was very clean on our arrival and was cleaned and bedding changed midway through our stay. The agent was reliable and helpful, he met us on arrival to guide us to the trullo, and sorted out any issues we had during our stay.

Outisde there are two terraces and lots of chairs, parasols, sunbeds etc for al fresco dining and sunbathing. We picked figs for breakfast from the tree in the garden, and one member of our group who is a keen cook even made some blackberry jam from the blackberries growing in all the hedgerows!

The property is not on mains water, but when the tank ran dry, the agent called the water company, who delivered a tanker full of water within a couple of hours.

There are some very good local restaurants and we particularly enjoyed the pizzeria Quanto Basta in Locorotondo and the gelateria C'E Gusto. There is also a good restaurant called Marco's with a lovely terrace for summer dining which is only just down the road from the trullo.

We spent quite a lot of time at the beach as it was hot, and we particularly like Lido Bizzarro at Torre Canne Sud, which has a sandy beach, a bar, restaurant, plus the usual sunbeds, parasols, showers etc.

We would recommend this to a group of friends or a large family group; there's plenty of space and everything is maintained to a high standard.

Beautiful house with lots of charm and character

  • 5 of 5

We have just come back from a lovely 12 day holiday staying in this fantastic house. Mary the owner was very helpful during the planning stages and always responded very quickly to my emails.

The quirkiness of staying in a traditional trullo made the holiday one to remember, and the tranquility was wonderful. We loved the outdoor shower, and you're spoilt for choice for outdoor terraces to enjoy your dinner and wine on. The interior is lovely too, cleaned and linen changed during our stay, and there was a most welcome 'Welcome pack' when we arrived.

We were there during something of a heatwave locally (40 degrees plus every day), so we took it easy in the mornings and went exploring in the afternoons. There are lovely beaches on the Adriatic within a short drive, the local towns are all stunningly pretty, and what with caves, Roman excavations and a theme park all close by the variety of things to do seemed endless!

We will certainly recommend the trullo to our friends; indeed, a couple have already asked for the details! Many thanks, we're NOT happy to be home!!

Trullo Azzurro - an absolute gem!

  • 5 of 5

A late booking at Trullo Azzurro was our good fortune. A wonderful house in a peaceful rural location, facilities excellent with an extremely helpful agent on call to iron out any hitches. My family and I explored atmospheric nearby towns and markets at Cisterino, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Ostuni - great fun. Beaches a bit of a drive but lovely, many options mostly about 45 mins away in various directions. Lecce about 100 kms aptly referred to as the Florence of the South definitely worth a visit. The lure of barbeques on the terraces at sunset with produce we'd gathered locally often won over the appeal of meals out. Peaceful and relaxing, the surrounding countryside is beautiful. So good we even may return!

Trullo Azzurro

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a relaxing and peaceful holiday in a beautiful secluded setting, Trullo Azzurro is thoroughly recommended. The property has been immaculately restored and tastefully furnished, with excellent facilities throughout - very clean and well-maintained. Mary, the owner, provided both by e-mail and at the trullo a wealth of information about the property and local amenities and places of interest, to help us make the most of our stay - the local agent was equally supportive. There are a number of beautiful towns and villages to visit in the area (Ostuni and Lecce were particular highlights) and the beaches, although not exactly on the doorstep, are well worth the drive. Alternatively you can just laze around the trullo soaking up the sun and not see a soul all day, sit on the roof watching the sun go down behind the hills and have a barbecue of delicious local food under the spectacular night sky. If you visit in August there's also the added bonus of a firework display nearly every other night from one of the nearby festivals. We had a wonderful time. A car is essential - however, a note of caution : we had to trade our large hire car in for a smaller model in order to negotiate the track leading to the trullo, which is narrow in places.

Easily accessible from either Bari or Brindisi airports with regular flights from the UK from London Stansted and Gatwick. Located in a delightful, unspoilt valley surrounded by wineries and olive groves between the historic hill-top towns of Locorotondo (5km) and Cisternino (7km). Both towns have winding, cobbled streets, traditional markets and large selection of excellent family-run restaurants. There is a well-stocked local supermarket 2km away at Trito. The property is well situated for beaches, for walking and cycling around quiet country roads or for exploring the sights of Puglia. It is close to Alberobello, which is a world heritage site composed wholly of trulli. The main towns of the region (Ostuni, Lecce, Taranto) are all easily accessible by car as are both Adriatic and Mediterranean coasts with their wonderful beaches and clear blue seas. Puglia is said to represent the real Italy with good food, good weather and people who are genuinely friendly and welcoming.

Other Activities: Zoo safari, archaeological sites, aqua park, caves, wineries.
