Cranberry Cottage is a picturesque waterfront cottage on Cobb Island in southern Maryland. Surrounded by the Potomac River, Wicomico River and Neale Sound, this small island offers visitors the opportunity to experience the peaceful, natural beauty of southern Maryland waterway communities.
This charming cottage is recently refreshed and fully furnished with both new and vintage pieces to create a casual coastal vacation atmosphere. In addition to the separate bedroom (queen sized bed) and hall bath, there is a sleep sofa (queen) and pull out chair (twin) that comfortably accommodate additional guests in the spacious open living area that overlooks the water. The quaint eat-in kitchen is fully equipped for easy family dining. A fully furnished enclosed wrap-around porch overlooking the water allows guests to watch the passing pleasure and work boats while enjoying a cup of coffee at sunrise or an evening dinner at sunset. The 100 foot pier and dock give visitors direct access to the calm tidal water perfect for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and crabbing (bring your own equipment).
Traffic is very light on Cobb Island making it perfect for biking, walking and enjoying the native wildlife (osprey, herons, swans and ducks) adding to the serenity of the peaceful waterside. Vintage adult bikes are available in the lower level garage for guest use. Both fishing and crabbing can be done directly from our private pier . A wonderful community playground is just a five minute walk away while a country grocery store, marina, local restaurants, The Rivah and Schuttlebutt, are also on the island. For additional dining and a taste of local seafood try Captain John’s Crab House/Marina and Shymansky’s Restaurant that are located just over the bridge.
To satisfy your touring spirit, Cobb Island is within easy driving distances of the museums and monuments of Washington DC, historic Mt. Vernon and Woodlawn Plantations in Virginia, the Civil War Battlefields of Fredericksburg, Virginia and St. Mary's City (early settler's village) in southern Maryland. Sail and motor boaters can make short day trips to various sites within the Potomac River watershed.
NOTE: Cranberry Cottage is complemented by Waverly Cottage, a two bedroom rental on the adjoining property (sleeps 6) thereby providing an opportunity to vacation with family and friends in neighboring homes. What a great time. I will have to admit I was a little worried about taking my teenage boys to a "cottage" 1 bedroom, 1 bath, no wifi and no cable. What a great time we had...boys actually became boys again... NO GAMING, TEXTING, INSTAGRAM... Instead we fished and crabbed ALL DAY! When that was not going on; the Boys were on FLOATS goofing off and playing in the water. The selection of vintage bikes were also great. The boys loved touring the island. WHAT A GREAT 4 DAYS. At night we would ALL watch a show on the 1 TV or played games as a FAMILY...unheard of right? Not at the CRANBERRY COTTAGE! The owners Betty and Vincent were as great as the cottage!
Visited Cranberry Cottage earlier this spring as a couple and had a very comfortable, quiet stay. We returned with our boys this month for a family reunion and really enjoyed the accommodations and all the island had to offer. . Swimming, boating, crabbing!
This cottage is clean, comfortable and cozy. Absolutely can't beat the porch views! Highly recommended for family vacations or simple weekend get away!
We have stayed here 4 times and we love it. The big plusses for us are: 1. It is only an hour and 15 minute drive from our house (Alexandria, VA). 2. It comes with a nice dock in protected water just off the Potomac River, so we bring our boat while we are here. 3. It is on Cobb Island, so it is peaceful and relaxing. 4. It has beautiful views of Neale Sound and the Wicomico River. 5. It is clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated. And 6. the owners are very nice. One doesn't need a boat to enjoy staying here, but having one opens up a lot of possibilities for boat outings: St. Clements Island, Leonardtown, Colonial Beach, Coles Point, St. Marys, etc. Most of these places can be reached by car. The cottage has a great wrap-around screened-in porch with beautiful views looking out over the water. The kitchen is well equipped. Also provided are: a gas barbecue grill, a washer and dryer, and a TV with VHS and some great movies.
A couple of things some might consider minuses and which should be mentioned. 1. Cranberry Cottage has only one bedroom with 2 single beds which can be moved together to make a double bed, plus a pull-out sofa bed and a pull-out loveseat bed. It has one bathroom. Thus it can sleep 5, but it handles 2-3 persons much more comfortably. 2. No cable, no DVD, and no internet. We get around this by bringing our own DVD player and an air-card to provide internet. The house next door is for rent by the same owners. It is slightly larger and slightly more upscale, and can be rented in conjunction with Cranberry Cottage to accommodate larger families.
