Villa Lalai is a luxury spacious house set in a large garden, planted out with figs and bougainvillea and has natural stone sculpture. It has an 8 x 4 swimming pool with Roman steps – the views from the private, secluded pool area are spectacular, looking up to the Besparmak mountains. There are sun loungers with parasols, a BBQ and patio dining for eight. Close by are olive groves and the sea is about a 10 minute walk away. At night the pool and garden lights give a magical atmosphere for your evenings sipping wine on the terrace. A herb garden provides rosemary, basil and mint for your mediterranean cooking!
Newly furnished in a tasteful, modern style, the luxurious interior is light and spacious with a marble staircase. Much care has been taken in the interior design and modern art adorns the walls. There is air conditioning in all rooms, plus standing fans. The lounge has patio doors leading onto terraces at the front and back of the house. Ample parking.
We will happily book airport collection and car hire for you and our property manager lives close by for your assistance. We have fast internet connection through our own wifi.
As well as relaxing, swimming and sunbathing, many activities can be enjoyed in the area, including scuba diving, sailing, snorkelling, walking, bird watching (300 species), horse riding, mountaineering and much more. There is a championship golf course nearby. Museums and castles abound. However, if it is relaxation you are after and you want to leave the pool for the day, there are lovely quiet beaches to be found close by. Alagadi is an official Turtle Watch beach (10 minutes from villa). At certain times of the year you can watch the turtles lay their eggs in the soft sand or watch the young as they head for the open sea. Acapulco is a hotel complex (about 20 minutes away) with all facilities including an aqua park bars and restaurants. Travelling east you will find wonderful beaches where you will be totally alone, just get out of the car and swim.
Bellapais Abbey is a magical place – built in the 12th Century it commands views of the whole northern coastline. At night the Abbey is floodlit and enchanting magical, there are classical concerts there at times during the summer season. There is a choice of restaurants in the village, one, ‘The Kybele’ is set in the Abbey grounds, book a seat with a view and be swept away by the panorama. Bellapais is where Lawrence Durrell lived when he wrote ‘Bitter Lemons of Cyprus’.
An excellent day trip would be to Famagusta (Gazimagusa) where the Roman City of Salamis should not be missed. Nicosia (Lefkosa) is about 30 minutes away and boasts the beautiful Selimiye Mosque, built by the Lusignans from 1208. The Great Turkish Bath dates back to the Ottoman period. Walk around the old streets around this area, filled with interesting little shops, then sit in the beautiful square close to the Mosque and enjoy a coffee whilst taking in the historic architecture.
Bahceli village (further up into the mountains) is a very rural village, worth a drive up to see how village life there has remained so unchanged. There are no facilities there – only smiling, curious faces. Esentepe village, approximately 8 minutes drive away, has the nearest mini-mart. Here you can find bars, restaurants, live music and a very naughty patisserie! There are other bars and restaurants close by along the coast, either rustic or more sophisticated. A large supermarket, Lemar, is on the road to Kyrenia where you can find everything you need, they have a great deli. Everywhere is happy to take UK sterling or Euros.
In Kyrenia you will find a bustling town with bars, restaurants and a Wednesday market.
The area is excellent for BIRD WATCHING. Many species can be seen from the patio including hobby, honey buzzard, bee eater, hoopee, roller, black franklin, blue heron and whinchat.
The villa is suitable for the elderly and children.
We live in rural Shropshire, Tony is a Chartered Accountant and I am an Art Advisor. We fell in love with Northern Cyprus 12 years ago whilst on holiday. We enjoy the fact that it is still much less developed than other destinations, the scenery is stunning, there are empty beaches and we love the people. We have enjoyed Villa Lalai with friends of our own age, teenagers and young children. There is so much to do and explore in the region, in between making the most of the excellent food and wine!
Carol Overs purchased this villa in 2005
We wanted to make our villa a place where guests arrived and were thrilled with their choice rather than that horrid
sinking feeling most of us have experienced. We have tried to think of everything to make holidays enjoyable. We also wanted a particular style of furnishing for the villa which would please people with similar taste. We hope you will enjoy it too.
One of the most desirous things about Villa Lalai is the seclusion of the pool area, we are not overlooked and one forgets that there are other properties around. Also the view from the outdoor dining and bathing area still excites us after all these years.
We have had the most wonderful holiday. The villa has beautiful interiors and the views from the pool area were breathtaking. We found lots to do, both for us and the children, from watching baby turtles return to the sea, enjoying bathing in the safe waters, to visiting sites such as Salamis. The area is so unspoilt, which made a refreshing change. The owners have thought of everything, we felt very spoilt.
We stayed at Villa Lalai for 10 days in June 2016.
The booking process was straightforward and Carol provided useful information on the villa and the surrounding area which was sent in advance. She also was very helpful in organising the booking of the airport taxi service and rental of a hire car (the service from Cyprus Pines was faultless!). This meant everything was sorted before we arrived at Larnaca airport and we could relax from day one. Mike and Lyn, who came over to introduce themselves on the first day, were very helpful. They gave us lots of useful information on local supermarkets etc, and it was comforting to know that if we needed some advice or help they were nearby (fortunately we didn’t have to trouble them!).
The villa is just as described on the HomeAway site, well equipped with everything you could possibly need. It was around 40C while we were at the villa so it was great to have air conditioning in the bedrooms and a water cooler in the kitchen! It’s worth mentioning the outlook onto the Besparmak mountains which was really lovely. Sitting on the terrace watching the wildlife was one of the highlights of our time at the villa.
The villa is situated in a small development which was very quiet (just what we wanted), but at the same time is not far from the main road, with easy access to all parts of northern Cyprus for those that want to explore. We made good use of the hire car and visited a lot of places. Outside the big conurbations (Kyrenia and Famagusta) the roads were really quiet and a pleasure to drive on.
Overall we had a very peaceful and relaxing break - which was just what we wanted. Normally we're ready to go home when we get to the end of the holiday but we both wished we could have stayed longer.
We arrived in the middle of the night in a taxi from Larnaca airport and were very tired so it was a quick cuppa and bed. But next morning, oh the delight in waking up and exploring this beautiful villa. Thanks for the eggs, milk and bacon, really needed that first morning, and the water butt in the kitchen was great, our breakfasts were spent on the front patio. After delivery of the hired car we went off to Tempo the local supermarket, giving my husband a heart attack by spending nearly 400 Turkish lira, not very much in stg!!! Then back to that glorious pool, which I admit I spent most of my time in.
The villa itself is immaculate, everything you need, all you need to buy is your food and wine of course!
My favourite part of the day was sitting on the patio glass of wine in my hand looking up at the village in the mountains and every four hours hearing the call for prayer.
Mike and Lyn are there if needed but thankfully everything was fine. My only regret was having to come home. Fingers crossed for next year.
Only one point the beautiful stairs are a bit of a struggle if you have difficulty climbing. I managed them just so anyone with any major problems would not get up them. Other than that, just enjoy the beautiful villa and especially the wonderful sights, sounds and people of Northern Cyprus, we will be back!!!
My partner and I spent two weeks in Carols Villa end of October / begging of November.
On arrival at Villa Lalai it was exactly as described and shown in the pictures. It was spotlessly clean and incredibly well provisioned. The villa itself is wonderful, with plenty of space and genuinely warm homely feel.
The best part of the villa was certainly the pool area and where we spent the majority of our time when at the villa. It is truly breathtaking, during our two weeks from the pool itself I think we saw three people. The Sheppard who we saw most days moving his sheep and a couple of random walkers. The view overlooking the mountains is magnificent and the location is so peaceful, you literally feel in the middle of no where.
Both Carol and Mike (Property Manager) could not have done more to help us with anything. Their knowledge of the local area etc. was invaluable to our visit and any questions were answered promptly. Carol went out of her way to help me when I had an issue that I managed to create for myself and resolved it from the UK. Mike gave us a lot of local knowledge and introduced us to his favourite band Grommelar (the best band in TRNC) who play at The Roots Bar (Highly Recommended).
We especially enjoyed our trips to:
Farmagusta/Gazimagusa, seeing Varosha is quite amazing and the beach is stunning with lovely warm water.
Kyrennia/Girne, quite surreal considering the average level of development how many fancy hotels and restaurants there are.
St. Hilarion Castle, an amazing experience with a lot of walking, remember water and probably don't go on the hottest day of your stay.
Restaurant wise, all the local recommended places are quite good. I think our best meal was at The Coconut which is walk-able across the road. The others The Gorgeous (European), Punjab (Indian), Sea Breeze (Turkish) and Bar B (European) were all memorable.
To finish I can 100% say I would recommend the villa to friends, family or anyone. It is lovely, in a beautiful setting, in a very interesting country.
One week in the spacious and luxury villa Lalai on the outside of a small villa neighbourhood, near the vey quiet main road on Cyprus north coast, well that deserves a recommendation. Peaceful direct view towards the hills inland, spacious rooms, well equiped kitchen. Owner Carol in UK is easy in contact by email, supporting, helping where possible. Thanks a lot!!
Villa Lalai is just gorgeous - beautifully decorated, stunning views and a fantastic pool. Really couldn't ask for more! I spent a lovely week there with my family at the end of May. On arrival in Cyprus, a taxi picked us up and our hire car was waiting for us at the villa - all arranged by the villa's owner, Carol. The surrounding area is stunning - you need a car to get around but highlights for me included a trip to Kyrenia, the beautiful Bellapais Abbey, the ruins at Salamis and the turtle beaches. There are also some great restaurants nearby. The local supermarket is well stocked (try their amazing humous!) and easy to drive to. Mike, the manager, was on hand whenever we needed him (which wasn't often) and was a fantastic help.
I couldn't recommend the Villa Lalai more. It made the perfect base for reading, sipping a cocktail and lounging by the pool, waiting for the BBQ to heat up. Bliss!
A return visit to this superb villa. Carol, the owner, helped us again with car hire and taxi to and from the airport. Mike , the manager, was really helpful, he gave us some good tips for beach days and other places to visit. The villa has everything you could possibly need and the pool and outdoor eating area are superb. If you want to have a relaxing holiday with nearby places to visit and to feel you have got really good value for money then this is the place for you. We love it !!
This is one of the most beautiful parts of the Mediterranean which has remained one of the least spoilt by mass tourism. The people of this region are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Kyrenia is an historic town built around a charming harbour, overlooked by a crusader castle. The harbour offers a wide variety of restaurants, some with rooftop views and at night, when the lights are lit, there is no more wonderful place to eat. During the day Roman ruins and Norman castles await exploration. The 200 miles of Northern coastline offers beautiful beaches, hidden coves and turquoise waters, for swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling and sailing. Dramatic mountains provide the backdrop to olive groves and carob orchards, goats roam freely and the smells of wild herbs and Cypress trees intoxicate. The island has a wonderful climate, long hot summers and relatively warm winters.
Our villa is part of a small group of houses on the Eastern coastal road, about 35 minutes from Kyrenia.
