A castle destroyed during the WW2, around a 50acres estate with a barn and an old 'vendangeoir' , now our house
When we definitly established, the barn had to be renovated or demolished!!! So now it's renovated in a comfortable holiday cottage in the midle of the estate with lake, woods, fields,...
Calm, Rest, Silence,
No car needed,
The beautifull old medieval town of Laon,
The WW1 battlefields
And the Champagne brands and cellars in Reims
We stayed here with our son, daughter in-law and daughter for 5 nights. We had a great time as this was the first time together in a couple of years.
Patrick (the owner) was great and his english skills were very good. The house was comfortable with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms upstairs plus a water closet downstairs. The beds are a little on the small side but were comfortable. The kitchen area was good and the fireplace was great. The only thing lacking was a clothes dryer. There was a washer, TV (only a few french stations) and free WiFi that worked great.
We did rent towels and linens from Patrick. You do have to pay for any extra electrical useage. Don't worry, for the 5 of us for 5 days we ran over but in total it came to about €10 extra.
The grounds are huge. We took a couple of walks around the property. Very relaxing. A short walk from the property is a bakery, market, pharmacy and bar. The town itself is a little sleepy french village (just what we wanted, quaint and quiet).
A short distance away is the historic medival town of Laon with major shopping, train station and restaurants. We ended up driving to Paris for the day. It was a little less than 2 hours away as we parked at the farthest out metro station and took the subway in to Paris. It was very easy to do and recommended. Parking was a breeze and no hassles.
We also visited historic WWI battlefields and Reims, the champagne capital of the world, only a 30 minute drive away.
I would recommend this place if you are looking for a quiet, comfortable, clean, affordable place to stay.
Easy to reach,if you land in Paris CDG or Paris-Beauvais we can pick you at the airport.
Driving from the ferry ports Calais or Boulogne, follow A26 motorway joining Calais to Reims, Dijon, Marseille and use the exit 13, just 2 h drive from Calais.
A lot to do all around: use the park to walk, go to the lake for carps fishing. Enjoy the village with a 'bistrot' , a good baker... Visit and shop in the medieval town of Laon with the 1st gothique cathedral, the Champagne cellars in Reims or Epernay with famous Champagne brands: Moet, Pommery.
And if interested by WW1, go to see the battlefields: 'le Chemin des Dames', Peronne with l'Historial, the ANZAC battlefields....
Or you can go play a round at the beautifull and challenging Ailette golf course (20mns drive and cheap green fees) , walk through the St Gobain forest to see deers, boars
Other Activities: Avalable flights in a light aircraft with an experimented pilot
Golf: The beautiful golf de l'Ailette is 18kms far. It's a 18 holes course par 72 and very well maintained through woods but with water hazards on the return loop. All holes are different and to score you must be accurate et long!!!
Special arrangements at l'Ailette Golf Club can be made and it's 20% off for green fees for weekly days.
Reims and Chateau Thierry Golf Clubs are 60kms far and easy to play on.
