It's about 50 feet from the lake to the deck outside the living room. (There is NO road to cross to get to beach). I have an almost new PONTOON AVAILABLE at no additional charge for your use (summer only), and you will only need to supply the gas and assure me you know how to operate the craft. (There is a deposit of $250 for use the boat. If you do not damage it, it will be returned to you.) I charge a cleaning/security fee of $100 (each in a separate check). If you clean up the cottage yourself, I will return that deposit to you also.

Let me be up front about this. This is definitely a NON-SMOKING cottage/yard/fire pit area. I support your right to smoke. Please support my right to request that you don't do it here.

About Carole Lanier

I 'm an older lady, retired from the City of Toledo where I was the Registrar of Vital Statistics. I love to travel, garden, feed and watch the birds, read, and relax with friends with a glass of our great regional wine! I'm easy going, have a good sense of humor, and enjoy people! I am so fortunate to have repeat renters and look forward to seeing them again!

Right now I'm dogless for the first time in my life. Your dogs are welcome to vacation with you!

Since I don't have one of my own right now, they are ever more welcome!!

I've explored all the little cities around here but never tire of returning. I especially like the state parks and beaches, the festivals, the winetasting, the trendy shopping as well as some great re-sale shops...not to mention all the art galleries and antique stores!

I have four grandchildren who have vacationed almost 24 years up here and who still love to come spend time on the beautiful lake.

Carole Lanier purchased this house in 1995

Why Carole Lanier chose Northern Michigan

My family always vacationed in and around this area when I was a kid in the 50's. I love the area because it's in the country and I never grow tired of seeing the rolling hills and changing scenery. I'm not here all the time, but sure wish I could be. It's away from the noise of the city. I personally don't like staying in motels when I'm in an area like this. There is generally a breeze from the lake which discourages mosquitos; we may have other bugs, but seldom any mosquitos! I recently experienced mosquitos in the UP and believe me, those babies are vicious!

What makes this house unique

My property is almost 1 acre in size. The cottage is about 200 feet from the road and down a hill. There is a small sandy beach with 3 steps downs to the water. Small children can handle the steps, but babies should not be left alone on the beach as I'm sure everyone realizes. The water is shallow enough at the foot of the steps for them, but I suggest water shoes. Since we're on the east side of the lake, we get to enjoy gorgeous sunsets. Occasionally we're fortunate enough to be able to view the Northern Lights if one can stay awake late enough! In late July and early August, I really try to watch for them and will wake you (if you wish) if I see them.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Carole...Thank you for the lovely place! We all had a GREAT time! The dogs loved swimming in the wonderful waters of Lake Leelanau! Just beautiful! I appreciate your sending me back my deposit check. Even through we had 6 dogs, we would not leave any place in "bad condition." You and Spencer have a wonderful summer!

I was just there July 25-August 1. Cottage was very clean, yard nice and great evening view of setting sun. Nice food/shopping access to Suttons Bay, Leelanau, Leland and Traverse City. Nice private yard with friendly neighbors. Will go to same cottage again in 2016 !

Very Satisfied Customer

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family (parents, 2 adult children, 1 teenager) spent a relaxing week in July at this terrific location on Lake Leelanau. The cottage had everything we were looking for -- great proximity to Traverse City, Leland, and local beaches/wineries, access to beautiful Lake Leelanau, and use of the pontoon boat included. We visited spots on Leelanau Peninsula, Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay comfortably, and could easily have spent another week.

We made extensive use of the pontoon boat which the owner makes available at no extra cost. Each of my three children enjoyed tow rides on the inner tube. We also fished, swam off the boat, and enjoyed exploring Lake Leelanau. It is possible to navigate through the narrows to North Lake Leelanau, and reach as far as Leland if you wish to sightsee. The savings over private rental in both cost and convenience is a big plus for this cottage.

The owner's residence is on the upper floor of this cottage, however she provided virtually complete privacy during our stay. We were able to knock and ask questions as needed, aside from this, we rarely saw the owner. We asked our adult children (nightowls) to keep the volume down after 10 PM, but they were able to move freely about in the wee hours with no issues. The owner's presence should not have much impact unless complete privacy is desired by the renter.

I would recommend this rental and we are very likely to be repeat renters ourselves!

Awesome Place for the Money!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and our 3 kids and two dogs stayed this past June and had an outstanding time. The cottage is located on a very nice section of Lake Leelenau and has a very nice, private yard. The use of the pontoon is a very nice bonus - especially for the price. Miss Carole is an extremely nice lady who really made us feel at home. We look forward to hopefully going back! A great bang for the buck!

Lakeside retreat

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and our two dogs have stayed here twice. Labor Day week 2013 and Memorial Day week this year (2014). We have been coming to the Sleeping Bear / Leelanau area for vacations and long weekends for over 15 years and I think this is our favorite property rental in the area. Its location on the water, the availability of the boat, and its closeness to Traverse City and surrounding Leelanau county are great. It is very private- the grounds are mostly well blocked to its neighbors by trees and the owner is very discreet (when she is around) to keep the grounds private to the tenants. I think the negative comments regarding an upstairs occupant (while correct) are a bit overstated. We'll be back soon I'm sure.

Great Price for a Private Rental!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Carol’s place. It’s a great private rental on the lake with very clean and comfortable rooms. The kitchen and main living area have large windows with a view of the lake making it feel very open and spacious. The yard is filled with beautiful gardens. The lake is clean and sandy out by the dock. Having access to the pontoon boat is a huge bonus as boats are very expensive to rent. We hope to return!

We had a great time at the rental. Very relaxing with a beautiful view of the lake. We enjoyed taking the pontoon out and exploring the lake. The rental had everything we needed for a fun and relaxing vacation. The owner was wonderful and accommodating. We plan on returning next year for another great week and would recommend this property to both friends and family.

There are so many attractions in the area it's impossible to list them all. There are 27 golf courses in the area, a children's fishing pond down the road, a children's museum, the Dennos Museum, a live theater, the Traverse City Film Festival, and too many wineries for me to count. Take a drive to nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; don't miss the scenic Pierce Stocking Drive with outstanding views of Lake Michigan. Hike throughout many of the trails in Sleeping Bear or take the kids to the 110 ft . or 400 ft. dune climbs. Some of the finest restaurants in all of Michigan are located in this area, ranging from casual family to fine dining. There are two malls in T.C., plus two casinos. Interlochen Arts Academy has fine concerts every evening. Wine and art festivals are nearby during the summer. A Farmers' Market is open summer/fall. A firepit is located on my property for your evening enjoyment. I provide sand toys, a tube for tubing, noodles, swimming flippers and some water shoes (from grown grandchildren).

Notes:
This is a very well maintained cottage with 100' of lakefront on almost an acre of land, a place you'll love to return to again and again. There are a great many trees on the property as well as a sunny front yard that leads down to a small sandy beach. The lot is 300' deep and is located on a country road approximately 10 miles outside of Traverse City. There are two decks near the water for relaxing in lawn chairs and chaise lounges. There is a fire pit near the waterfront for evening fires and usually a supply of firewood nearby.
