About Mark Ekkel
I am a proud Australian, but with Dutch parents, I also have a strong connection and utter respect and awe for the achievements of my forefathers. To own a piece of world heritage is surreal and an absolute honour. With every trip, I invest time in the house - retaining its old authentic charm while affording the little modern day luxuries. It has been an amazing experience to furnish the house by walking the cobbled streets of the area hand selecting items that will add charm to the house. As I live in Melbourne, we cannot stay at New Holland House anywhere near as much as I would like. However, I fit the house out so we feel inspired and can enjoy our stay - I extend the same luxuries and comfort to our guests! I have fallen in love with New Holland House - I am sure you will quickly discover why!
Mark Ekkel purchased this House in 2011
Why Mark Ekkel chose Amsterdam-Centrum
Jordaan is simply an amazing location - a historic and genuine "neighbourhood". However, there are very few stand alone houses - it took plenty of patience to find this gem, but it was love at first sight. I pinch myself whenever I arrive to think I own this little magic piece of world heritage - it is like waking up to a Postcard everyday you are here!
What makes this House unique
The house just looks picture perfect. People regularly stop to take photos - it may well be one of the most photographed houses in Amsterdam ! As it is world heritage listed, the external facade is here to stay. Inside, the old staircase, the old beams and the quirkiness of an Amsterdam remains, but you have more freedom to add a touch of character and luxury.

Perfect house in which to walk to everything you might want to see in Amsterdam . The location could not have been more perfect
A wonderful five days
The property was exactly as advertised, very centrally located, with excellent access to central Amsterday. The home is beautifully appointed, a wonderful mix of old-world charm and modern convenience.
Charming from the outside, not the inside!
The location of the house was excellent. The layout of the house was very restrictive and disappointing. The large (by European Standards) bathroom on the main floor was very nice, except the bedrooms were on the third floor, not the main floor. The bathroom on the third floor was so small that the door would open out and hit the stairway bannister. You literally could only use the toilet and shower because the tiny sink was hidden under a shelf.
The property manager was not very welcoming or forthcoming with helpful information. She explained there was smoke coming out of the dryer so not to use it, she would get someone to fix it in a couple of days and she never did. Maybe that's why the luxurious towels were so stiff?
The online and email description of the amenities were very misleading. We were told the house would be freshly painted. Only the middle floor of the house was freshly painted. The first floor was very dusty, the rug under the "dining table" table was full of saw dust, looked like it was never cleaned from when they sanded the steep narrow steps. Because these steps were unfinished, there were no treads and they were very slippery. The wooden bookcase under the steps reeked of smoke. We had to buy our own disinfectant/air spray to cover up the smell. There were cobwebs and dust on the first floor and in the queen bedroom. Also, be prepared for people constantly looking into the front window of the house and taking pictures.
If there is any doubt about what I described, I'd be happy to provide pictures of the inside of this property, taken on the first day of our rental.
Hi Mindy. I am glad you appreciated the fresh painting of the house outside and the great location. I am most surprised by your comments about the cleanliness of the house as I expect the highest (luxury hotel) standards for the house - as all other reviews have appreciated. I apologise that the house wasn't immaculately cleaned (which appears to have been due to the building works before your arrival), and will take this up with our local manager to ensure that future guests experience the same 5 star experience that all other guests have had in the past. Mark
We walked everywhere from here. Loved it. Highly recommend
Great stay in Amsterdam
We greatly enjoyed our stay at the New Holland House. It is an ideal location, in the city center but along a small street so that it is as quiet as possible. The house itself is beautiful and includes everything one needs for a comfortable stay, including a well appointed kitchen. With two adults and two kids, we felt we were staying in a home-away-from-home in the center of Amsterdam. We will definitely come back!
Cozy, charming, comfortable - fantastic location!
Our stay at 2 Rozenstraat was amazing! The 3 story house was charming - 1st floor kitchen had everything we needed to cook (including fondue set), and sitting area with view of canal was cozy. Master bath also on first floor with claw foot tub, separate shower and towel warmer was luxurious. The 2nd floor living room/den with well-stocked bookshelves, gas fireplace, TV (which we didn't watch because - well, so much else to do in Amsterdam) and fold out couch was warm and welcoming. The third floor bedrooms (one with Queen bed, the other with two twins) were comfortable - extra down comforters were welcome during the cold spell! Staircases to 2nd and 3rd floors were pretty narrow and steep but manageable. Location was perfect - off the beaten path. We walked everywhere (<5 minutes to Anne Frank House and Tulip Museum (definitely learned a bunch about tulips; ~20 -25 minutes to Reijksmuseum/Van Gogh museum), grocery stores (Marqt, Albert Heijm) were about 10 minutes away, as was amazing cheese shop (Tromp). Too many restaurants to mention by name, but all within walking distance. Walking/shopping in Nine Streets area was really fun. Lidia was extremely helpful getting us settled in and making suggestions. All in all, an amazing find that let us feel like we were living and not just staying in Amsterdam!
New Holland House is in the historic heart of Amsterdam, in the neighbouring block to Anne Frank House.
De Negen Straatjes (9 small shopping streets nestled between canal bridges) start just across the canal.
The house overlooks the famous Pulitzer Hotel (of Oceans 12 / George Clooney / Brad Pitt fame).
Tram stops, Canal boat stops, taxi ranks are all within 100m.
Supermarkets are within 100m, and a number of great organic supermarkets are in the area.
Fantastic restaurant streets and cool cafes/bars are to be found in the beautiful cobbled streets of Jordaan in the area surrounding the house.
Dam square and The Royal Palace is a few minutes away walking through the 9 streets.
An amazing central location in the most interesting part of Amsterdam.
The Museums, Vondelpark and other areas of Amsterdam are all in walking or riding distance. Luxury bikes (2) are provided with the house.
