About the property

2 Bedrooms, half a block away from express trains, close to parks, non-smoking

This 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment is perfect for the traveler who wants to experience all that New York City has to offer while staying in a quiet historic neighborhood. This treelined quintessential New York block is also half a block from the A and D Trains which take you to Times Square in 15 minutes.

Outfitted perfectly for any renter, this apartment is very comfortable and includes a washer/dryer. It is perfect for families and has a booster seat, pack n play and toys are available upon request. It is an open layout with a comfy couch, flat screen TV and a large dining table. 1 bedroom has a queen sized bed and the other a full sized and twin sized bunk beds. Fully stocked, the kitchen has all the amenities one would need to cook a 4 course meal, but why would you cook when you could eat out and have any ethnic cuisine steps away from your apartment!

Currently new legislation outlaws short term rentals in multi-family units (buildings categorized as 3-family or greater by the DOB. This house is a DOB certified 2 family house which makes it legal to rent short term according to the new legislation.

The House: This beautiful apartment is on the ground floor of a five floor brownstone row-house in the Sugar Hill/Hamilton Heights section of Harlem. The house was built in 1898 in Renaissance Revival style as a single family house for a family with lots of servants. During those years, this garden apartment was the kitchen and informal dining room.

During the 1920s the house was a speak easy and later a bed and breakfast. We purchased the house 3 years ago and renovated the house but preserved as much original detail as possible. In the first year, we lived in the garden apartment with our two kids while we renovated the rest of the house. Hence, its family friendly layout, bunk beds and access to family needs such as a changing pad and pack n play.

The Neighborhood: Sugar Hill and Hamilton Heights are a lovely neighborhood of elegant row-houses in an area that once served as the country retreat for the city's wealthy, at a time when the city included just southern Manhattan. Alexander Hamilton. a prominent statesman in the 1780s, built his country home, The Grange, on his estate just south of where 145th Street is now. Today The Grange is part of the National Parks system and can be visited at the north end of St. Nicholas Park.

When the train lines were extended north to this area in the 1880s the land was developed into elegant townhouses.

During the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s, African Americans made their mark on NYC as they had never been permitted to do so before. The north end of Hamilton Heights was known as Sugar Hill, for the sweet life available to those who could afford it.

The neighborhood is full of magnificent architecture in a variety of turn-of-the-century styles on quiet tree-lined streets dotted with lovely community gardens.

Great location. Felt very safe Lots of extras included

Location is close to many things via the subway which is right around the corner. Lots of amazing restaurants very close. The property is super clean and loaded with extras - shampoo, detergent, brand new Bosch dishwasher, beautiful washer and dryer. Kate was extremely helpful.

Close enough to visit downtown, without the hustle.

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was a short distance on the subway from the Hustle and Bustle of Manhatten but in the lovely well equiped community of Sugar Hill. I felt very safe with my family. The apartment was well equiped, comfortable and warm and easily catered for 4 adults. Kate responded quickly and I thoroughly recommend anyone staying with her.

Excellent place, close to subway, quiet and clean

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful basement apartment suite. Located very close to the subway and a grocery store.

The apartment was a perfect place for us to stay and take the subway into the heart of the city. We enjoyed how quiet and clean the apartment was. The apartment was comfortable and well stocked, check in and out was super easy.

We would highly recommend this apartment for a trip to NYC. This was our third time visiting NYC and we enjoyed the amenities of an apartment vs a tiny downtown hotel room.

Perfect stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here a week in October, 2 adults and 2 children. With 2 bedrooms it was the perfect size for us, and one of the few apartments we found with bunk beds. The kitchen was well equipped and having a washer and dryer was very handy. The subway station is 2 minutes away, at the end of the street, and if you get an express train you can get downtown very quickly. The area felt very safe, and the street is pretty quiet, my son is a light sleeper but he never had problems sleeping here. Kate, the owner was very helpful when we had questions. We wouldn't hesitate to come back here.

Comfortable apartment in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I very much enjoyed our stay at this comfortable apartment on a nice quiet street in Manhattan. The best part of the apartment is that is just steps away from the ABC and D trains at the West 145th St subway station.Times square is only 3 stops away on the express train and we found we could get just about anywhere we wanted to go in Manhattan via subway in 15-20 minutes. As an added bonus, the shower curtain is a subway map, so we always confirmed our plans with a stop in the bathroom!

We ate every meal out, so we did not make much use of the kitchen but it has all the amenities one might require to cook a family meal. The bed was plenty comfortable and the bedroom AC unit kept us cool, though it could be somewhat loud at times. We used the second bedroom only for storing our luggage but the bunk bed in that room looked comfortable as well. The photos here are very accurate.

Though we did not meet Kate in person, we communicated via text several times during our stay and she even dropped off some amenities (at my request) while we were out one evening. Overall, the stay was everything we expected and I would book this apartment again without hesitation.

About Kate

The owners Mark and Kate grew up in the same town but never met until one fateful Thanksgiving on a flight home, and the rest was history. Both Mark and Kate live in the upper level of the home and rent out their garden level apartment. They like to rent to visitors and share their favorite things to do in the city.

Kate purchased this apartment in 2014

This is a beautiful historic home on a street that hasn't changed since 1899. This tree-lined, well lit street is known for its friendly long-term residents who take care of the block. The home is historic and recently renovated for modern amenities. The owners plan on living here until they are old and grey!

What makes this apartment unique
