My name is Dorothy. I moved out here as a single mum with my daughter, then 3 years old. We lived here for 6 years, renting the property out during the summer, with our own private accommodation in an apartment below. I taught English to children and young adults during this time. Absolutely love this village, very friendly and Tuscan! Has been a wonderful start in life and education for my daughter Poppy. We moved back to the UK in 2011 but still spend alot of time travelling back and forth to further renovate the property. My daughter had a wonderful beginning growing up here and going to school in this little village and found Nozzano Castello to be the perfect home and holiday. Hope to see you there! x
Dorothy D'Addio purchased this house in 2005
This is the perfect retreat for families, with lots of activities and places of interest to vist both locally and within an hours drive of the property. With a selection of family bikes, you can enjoy a safe and leisurely ride through the villages and towns. A car is recommended to really venture out and enjoy the scenery and surrounding towns and villages but there are local buses to the main town of Lucca and from there connecting coaches and trains to places further afield such as Florence, Sienna and Garfagnana. There are numerous beaches along the Versilia coastline from 30-60 minutes by car. Viareggio is just a 10 minute journey from Nozzano by train. You can walk or cycle from the house into Lucca off road, along the river Serchio. It is only ten minutes from the motorway with easy access to all major cities and towns such as Pisa and Florence. It really is a serene experience of traditional Italian life without being totally cut off and isolated from the city centre.
The property is situated in the heart of a medieval village with its own castle a stone's throw from the house. The winding, characteristic side- streets and residents' houses with its castle walls resembles a mistical setting from a fairytale. Views on a clear day, reaching as far as the tower of Pisa and its Duomo. Passing through Cornfields at every turn, Poppy fields in May and Sunflower fields in Summer, rustic properties, and goat herding Shepherds, makes this a wonderful place to explore and photograph.
As villages go, this is surprisingly equipped with every amenity necessary within a walks distance from the house. Nozzano benefits from an extremely respected restaurant, two bars, fresh butcher and bakery, general village shop, barber and an excellent ladies hairdresser. For general services, there is a Post Office and Chemist. Where there is not what you need available, Nozzano also has the added bonus of visits from a mobile fresh vegetable van twice weekly, a daily fresh bread van, and a weekly market that brings fresh fish, groceries and a florist. An unmanned train stations lies about 10 minute walk away and this goes to Lucca and Viareggio and various other towns and villages between. Walks further into the hillsides awards magnificent views reaching far across Nozzano and Lucca.
We had a fabulous holiday at Nozzano Castello near Lucca. The house was cool, airy, comfortable and well equipped; Dorothy and Poppy were lovely and welcoming, with very helpful with suggestions. The house was exactly as described and suited us perfectly; two things we would have wished for - a more powerful, and therefore quicker, shower and an apron! Our favourite things were: the little village of Nozzano with bakery, bar, chemist, etc. and wonderful pizzeria restaurant; Lucca, and cycling along Lucca city walls; the mountain streams beyond Massa and the amazing mountain villages and scenery. The house is close to lots of attractions to suit a wide variety of interests - cultural, nature, swimming and sun bathing, shopping, foodie etc. We would recommend the house, huge thanks to Dorothy and Poppy, lovely to meet you!! Pisa and Pisa Airport is only half an hour away by car. Not only is Pisa a lovely day out for the famous "Piazza dei Miracoli" with it's leaning tower, but there are also some beautiful beaches too located in Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia.
Held annually in the ancient walls of the city of Lucca, Tuscany, the Lucca Music Festival offers evening performances in the Piazza Napoleone. Check the Lucca website for the upcoming line-up. Sitting in the grandstand on a warm summer night soaking up the music is the perfect way to end a day of Tuscan sightseeing. The Pisa and Florence Airports are an easy train or bus ride away or you can take private taxi to Lucca.
Torre del Lago is a small village between Lucca and Viareggio, which owes its fame to the great composer Giacomo Puccini, who built a beautiful villa along the shores of the Massaciuccoli lake. The streets around the villa were named after his most famous operas.
Lago Massaciuccoli, an important nature preserve for rare and migrant birds, provides a pretty backdrop for open-air performances of Puccini's work.
Montecatini Terme, with its world- famous thermal baths, large parks and gorgeous gardens has been a busy health spa for centuries. High above, connected by a funicular railway that was built in 1897, isMontecatini Alto, a fortified medieval town commanding spectacular views of the Tuscan countryside which is dotted with many villages and towns, and divided by well-tended farms, vineyards and olive orchards.
These "Montecantinis" sit in the broadValdinievole on the A11 highway in Pistoia Province between Lucca to the west andPrato and Florence to the east. They should not be confused with Montecatini Val di Cecina, which is 100 kilometers south in Pisa Province.
There are buses and a small train station from the village. Not very many in a day, but enough to get you to and from Lucca. The trains go direct to Lucca and Viareggio (coast). It is recommended to hire a car if you wish to really discover Tuscany and the surrounding areas.
